Live from Iowa, 2 p.m. ET. Last chance for Mitt to turn back the tide and for Fred to remind people he’s still running. What’s the line of attack? Dumond and the clemencies? Huck’s Gitmo reversal? The ‘92 AIDS snafu? The Fair Tax? And does Mitt dare smack him on religion knowing that evangelicals are already flocking to him?
Fox News will be carrying it. If you’re at work, catch the stream at the Des Moines Register’s website.
Update: A sneak preview of the media, circa June 2008, if trends continue: “Huckabee the Caveman.”
Update: Dean Barnett e-mails, “If I were Huckabee, I’d apologize for the Jesus and Satan being brothers remark directly to Mitt, and then walk over and extend his hand. If he does that, he’ll be unbeatable.”
Update: Here’s Keyes, who’s been insufferably pompous and off topic throughout the debate, hijacking the global warming question and setting up Fred for a laugh line.
Update: More Keyes. He’s a grotesque parody of a religious conservative.
Update: And here’s Fred taking a stand on dopey show-of-hands questions.
Update: The most crowd-pleasing answer from an otherwise dull debate.

All of the above. It’s a virtual huck-a-palooza of talking points.
lorien1973 on December 12, 2007 at 1:37 PM
Who was the genius who decided to have this take place at 1pm? Most people won’t be able to watch and thus will have to rely on accounts from the MSM and pundits- and they’re usually preoccupied with who had the best laugh line of the night.
Hollowpoint on December 12, 2007 at 1:40 PM
Clemencies? Absofreakinlutely. Gitmo? Almost guaranteed. AIDS? Very Possibly. Fair Tax? Less likely than the others.
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 1:40 PM
I do love me the live stream.
Spirit of 1776 on December 12, 2007 at 1:45 PM
The MSM who wants people to rely on their accounts.
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 1:45 PM
I hope Fred had an extra cup of coffee and a jalapeno for lunch (fire in the belly).
And it wouldn’t hurt if someone pissed him off this morning.
AZCON on December 12, 2007 at 1:46 PM
Huck’s over the top with his attack on Romney/Mormonism, and it’s his most serious mistake so far, IMO.
If the other candidates allow themselves to get sucked into a peeing contest over religious dogma, then it’s going to tarnish them all in the eyes of swing voters.
petefrt on December 12, 2007 at 1:49 PM
Agreed, AZ. Fred is better when pissed on.
That bodes ill for a guy that would need to have 9 years of fight left in him; Fred fails that test.
Jaibones on December 12, 2007 at 1:49 PM
HuckAir continues to roll, here. For today’s Huck-O-Rama, I say you go with the “The Huckster” attack: Huck is a huckster, and everything he says is subject to reversal tomorrow. He makes Waffles look like Churchill.
Jaibones on December 12, 2007 at 1:51 PM
I know that everyone who usually writes blog comments knows everything already, but is there anyone else like me who doesn’t have any earthly idea who he’s going to vote for? I mean, there are like 4-5 people who I could see getting a vote, but I just can’t bring myself to BELIEVE anyone yet. It doesn’t matter to me what they say today, tomorrow, or any other day. There just isn’t that much hope that they’ll actually do any of it.
Darin on December 12, 2007 at 1:51 PM
I hope somebody makes Huckabee cry. Seriously.

I have no clue. I think Rudy is the most electable, but I like Fred’s positions the most. I’m warming to Mitt. I wish Hunter was more visible. I wish McCain weren’t so old.
lorien1973 on December 12, 2007 at 1:55 PM
LOL!
petefrt on December 12, 2007 at 1:57 PM
You can’t be trusted to form the correct opinion for yourself.

Lame.
NTWR on December 12, 2007 at 2:00 PM
What a cheap shot from the Register’s editor.
steveegg on December 12, 2007 at 2:02 PM
You don’t need that to watch it though.
Spirit of 1776 on December 12, 2007 at 2:02 PM
I won’t hold my breath.
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 2:02 PM
Let’s start by limiting the debate to the 2 things most important to me, WOT and illegal immigration!!!!
AZCON on December 12, 2007 at 2:03 PM
So what could they WANT to know?
Limerick on December 12, 2007 at 2:03 PM
Hey I’m all for Huckabee!
-> Releasing murdering rapists into the community.
-> Reduced penalties for meth lab dealers.
-> Unilateral negotiations with Iran.
-> Lift the embargo on Cuba.
-> Raise your taxes through the roof.
Sounds like a good solid conservative Christian leader!!
thareb on December 12, 2007 at 2:03 PM
Is that as good as a Mitt Romney campaign email?
bnelson44 on December 12, 2007 at 2:04 PM
I see this type of attack as only helping Huckabee.
bj1126 on December 12, 2007 at 2:04 PM
wha???? Since when was Keyes running?

Moveon.org or
Moron.org?
ronsfi on December 12, 2007 at 2:06 PM
Couple of months, IIRC. First debate, though.
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 2:06 PM
Wow, go HUNTER!!! He makes so much sense.
NTWR on December 12, 2007 at 2:07 PM
I have no idea who I will vote for. Rudy could beat the Dems. I have issues with all the Repubs. who are top tier. I have lots of friends who are Evangelicals and they are not rushng to Huck. Tired of the trashing of the Evans. I’m Catholic so I know what bashing is.
calgrammy on December 12, 2007 at 2:07 PM
Huck is losing me - a three point, alliterated response.
Ugh. Old School Baptist technique.
nailinmyeye on December 12, 2007 at 2:10 PM
Darin, supra:
Send e-mail, and I will inform you confidentially of the correct choice.
paul006 on December 12, 2007 at 2:10 PM
No. Seriously, what is Keyes doing there?
yo on December 12, 2007 at 2:11 PM
How in the blue heck did Alan Keyes get on this stage? Y’know, I’ve thought many things about this race so far, but I didn’t think we needed MORE candidates…
Darin on December 12, 2007 at 2:12 PM
WHAT is Alan Keyes doing there???
asc85 on December 12, 2007 at 2:12 PM
Big ice storm today in Iowa
bnelson44 on December 12, 2007 at 2:13 PM
It doesn’t have anything to do with printing my own money in my basement, does it?
Darin on December 12, 2007 at 2:13 PM
Iowans really want to know about these things? They must be smart.
nailinmyeye on December 12, 2007 at 2:13 PM
So far good questions. I was with Huck but that was before the school breaks for illegals and high taxes, that weakened my vote for him, but then he played the God card. I’m a christian, I aint no fool. So now Im kinda warm on Romney…
JVelez on December 12, 2007 at 2:13 PM
Paul: “We maintain an empire we can’t afford”.
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 2:14 PM
Ron Paul’s ancestors must have been in charge at the end of the Roman Empire.
AZCON on December 12, 2007 at 2:14 PM
I still don’t know who I will vote for.
nailinmyeye on December 12, 2007 at 2:14 PM
I like all this talk of “keeping more money in American’s pockets” but I don’t think the fair tax is the way to go.
Oooh, Paul. Quick-build giant walls surrounding our country and just run away from the world!
NTWR on December 12, 2007 at 2:14 PM
These questions are phrased is a pretty liberal manner.
bnelson44 on December 12, 2007 at 2:15 PM
Huck!….that was a pile you just stepped in….Prevention….ya mean Government Rules of How to Live?
Limerick on December 12, 2007 at 2:16 PM
How much do you want to bet Keyes gets more time than Fred?
AZCON on December 12, 2007 at 2:16 PM
The meter disappeared when Mitt speaks? I guess FOX likes Mitt?
abinitioadinfinitum on December 12, 2007 at 2:16 PM
Boring.
I liked Keyes comment about the fair tax. I never heard it explained in that way.
I dread the implementation of the fair tax. A Republican starts the process. A 1% national sales tax and a corresponding reductionh in income tax, then a Democrat controlled congress would raise the fair tax without lowering the income tax, or vice versa. Would I pay a national sales tax of say 7-12% yeah. And Keyes is right. The economic health of the country would be the interest of the federal government.

Corner reporting:
bnelson44 on December 12, 2007 at 2:17 PM
I really dont think so. I think Libs are so dense they wouldnt ask these questions. Right now they would ask when are we going to Mars
JVelez on December 12, 2007 at 2:17 PM
Is it me or does Ron Paul’s stance on every position begin and end with foreign policy?
Theworldisnotenough on December 12, 2007 at 2:17 PM
Someone DID piss Fred off this morning.
AZCON on December 12, 2007 at 2:18 PM

Darin on December 12, 2007 at 2:22 PM
Seriously… Alan Keyes…
askheaves on December 12, 2007 at 2:22 PM
I am surprised to see Allen Keyes. Just what we need another candidate.
calgrammy on December 12, 2007 at 2:23 PM
ALAN FREAKIN KEYES… Im getting warmer to Romney, I like Hunter but he aint going nowhere
JVelez on December 12, 2007 at 2:23 PM

bnelson44 on December 12, 2007 at 2:24 PM
Paul talking about opening up to Cuba?
Dude …
yo on December 12, 2007 at 2:25 PM
Hunter didn’t get tortured, but he’s still awesome.
NTWR on December 12, 2007 at 2:25 PM
They’d have more time if they had not invited Keyes.
Slublog on December 12, 2007 at 2:25 PM
Why does Paul want us to surrender with Castro?
bnelson44 on December 12, 2007 at 2:26 PM
What a poor moderator. Is this the best they could do? Sad.
Spirit of 1776 on December 12, 2007 at 2:26 PM
Yeah, because I’m sure opening up trade with Cuba will solve our economic woes.
askheaves on December 12, 2007 at 2:26 PM
Why? are they giving time to Paul, Keyes, ect…
What about some time for FRED?
abinitioadinfinitum on December 12, 2007 at 2:26 PM
If The High Reverend Huckster pulls a publicity stunt like that, Mitt should roll his eyes and say, “I just pray to Jesus that you really mean that in your heart Mike”.
MB4 on December 12, 2007 at 2:27 PM
Huck: “I can’t part the Red Sea, but I can part the red tape”.
Oy.
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 2:27 PM
Heh. Did Huckabee just criticize excessive taxation?
Chutzpah-mania!

Good answer, Huck. Lawsuits are ruining our small businesses.

A Hunter-Tanc ticket would be pretty helpful to the US, IMO.
Paul is such a doomsday guy.

What the heck was that?
amerpundit on December 12, 2007 at 2:34 PM
Props to Fred Thompson. This “show of hands” crap is idiotic. You can’t bring up a question about something complex and scientific and expect a yes/no answer to be sufficient.

No Hand games!
