We need something to cleanse the palate of election heart-ache. Psssst.

I must say, rarely have Plant’s girlish shrieks sounded more magnificently shrill than they do here on “Kashmir.” Exit question, per commenter clghitis: While we can all agree on Page, does RP really deserve induction?

Oh God, yes. If it wasn’t for that cheezy goatee, Plant would look more like an old lesbian than Page.

No matter what you read, there isn’t a man here who wouldn’t give a kidney to wail on a Les Paul like Jimmy Page!

This is Led Zeppelin, folks! Try to keep things in perspective!

Man I’m getting old.

I saw Led Zep in June 1977 at the Inglewood (Los Angeles) forum. It was roasting hot in that place and school had just let out for summer. But it was the best concert I’d ever been to out of all I’ve been to. I believe it was their last tour in LA before Bonzo died and it was just before Robert Plant’s son died :(

I had to sneak to the concert because my parents would never have let me go if I’d asked permission. I still have my ticket stub somewhere in my small box of ‘momentos’ packed in a bigger box somewhere in my garage. We had great seats in Loge and it was something like a whole $8 or $9 each for the seats.

I’ve been to a couple of Page/Plant reunion tours in Costa Mesa, Ca and once in San Diego. But it just wasn’t the same, although, Jimmy Page’s guitar playing was spell bounding nonetheless.

SilverStar830 on December 11, 2007 at 3:47 PM

What? No Diddy to bust some phat rhymes over “Kashmir” and bridge the generation gap?

On second thought, that would’ve been even lamer than three old has-beens shuffling through their ancient hits.

Rock is a young man’s game. Touring for these guys would mean $200 tickets for a stolid, uninteresting 2hr rehash show that’ll be sad by the fourth or fifth gig because Plant will lose his voice.

If their management company is smart, they’ll release this reunion concert on HD DVD/Blu-ray and zap the Zep before they embarass themselves.

I never said I wouldn’t. Zep’s the reason I play guitar in the first place. Zep’s the reason why I own both a Les Paul and a double-neck. ;)

I would agree with the above that most older groups should just call it quits–like The Stones. But this is different. When I saw Page and Plant back in ‘98, they played 16 Zep songs and it was pretty incredible. I’ve seen Plant a few times and his shows are always very good. Sure, he doesn’t have the chops of a 25 year old, but so what?

Every year BB King plays in Nashville for his annual birhday concert. I saw him 10 years ago as well–I think he was turning 70 that year. He was incredible. And what about Eric Clapton? There are certain guitarists like Page, Clapton and BB that one must see live no matter the age of the performer. I only wish that I could have seen Johnny Cash live before he died.

I’m just glad a had awesome seats when I saw Page and Plant a decade ago. Now I’m just waiting on Van Morrison to come back to the Ryman–he came last year and sold out in 8 minutes.

Wow, that kicked ten degrees of ass…definitely my fave Zep anthem of all time, ever so slightly ahead of ‘When the Levee Breaks’.

I envision all these modern bands trying to rock out and get their music videos right and all, and then I see a hulking shadow envelop them, a shadow of godlike proportions…then up to the sky they all look to see a mighty giant with a warhammer the size of a sequoia, who promptly begins to beat them all into the dust with earthquake-like blows raining down from the heavens, all to the exact tune of Kashmir.

Zep will forever be Kings of all that rock.

Thanks man!

Somehow, the Zep’s live music doesn’t lend itself to become as fine a wine as say, the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, or Yes.

kevcad on December 11, 2007 at 7:38 PM

I don’t want to sound bitter here (I know we are all thrilled with what we see) but Led Zep sounds horrible live. Put them in a studio and they are wicked, but Robert Plant doesn’t have the vocals for live shows.

I still wouldn’t pass on the chance to see them in concert.

Pink Floyd “P*U*L*S*E” was still the greatest live show evah. Even better than the Delicate Sound of Thunder.

Maybe Jimmy Page should stop being a punk and allow his song library to be used on the next Guitar Hero game? I know they finally allowed iTunes to sell their stuff.

Anyway, long live Led Zeppelin!

Yeah, they’re (almost) always better in the studio than on the stage, but this seems a pretty solid concert. (Though you can tell Plant’s voice has aged on, say, Stairway to Heaven.) The sound on some of these is crap; no doubt it’ll be a lot better when they remaster it and put it out on CD. (The Newsnight one is good.) Overall, Rockin’!

Silliness. Do you esteem technical skill over musical charisma? Page has it. Hendrix was almost entirely about it. It matters, if the goal is to enthrall with music.

Heresy. If Armageddon comes, there will be three things that survive- cockroaches, Christmas fruitcake, and Led Zeppelin.

Hollowpoint on December 12, 2007 at 12:57 AM

Led Zeppelin’s music can never be categorized as “old” or “rehashed”. Page, Plant, and company created music that transcends time. Their songs are as relevant today as they were 35 years ago. The influence of Led Zeppelin can be felt and heard throughout virtually every rock group that came after them. Just in terms of the venue of arena rock, the hooks and power riffs are as compelling and powerful, as seen in these video clips, as they ever were.

Plant may not be able to hit the notes he hit back in Zep’s heyday but I’d be willing to bet he can hit more notes at 59 years old than most of today’s singers. As for Page’s guitar playing, it’s live, not memorex. Watch video clips of Guns n Roses and you will see that live isn’t about perfect, clean playing but using the ax to work the crowd into a frenzy. And where did Slash learn? The answer is so obvious…

Where are the dancers?

Aren’t you supposed to be surrounded by choreographed hip hop dancers?

saint kansas on December 12, 2007 at 7:42 AM

Kashmir was ruined for me when Page collaborated with a Hip-Hop gangsta’ and let him rap over the instrumental portion. It became the theme track for that craptastic redeux of Godzilla. I also watched them perform it on SNL with a large string section. So much for a great song.

Rock music and Harley Davidson have become the realm of the aged.
