Good work, sister.

The Second Amendment prevents a higher body count. Again.

This was a very emotional statement from this woman,
and in every way, this truly defines what a Hero is.

As a secruity guard, she went beyond the call of duty,
was composed, and identified herself, and engaged him.

I believe G!d was with her,in the coming days,I dare say
the media, because of the religion connection, will try and
spin this in their mindset,I hope not.

canopfor on December 10, 2007 at 11:05 PM

Now is a good time to show my pastor my license and ask permission to carry there.

Not because I want to be Jeanne, but because I don’t want to be the victims in the parking lot.

Character and courage in the face of great necessity: saved lives. Well done, ma’am.

Good for her! Yet another sweet vitory for our founding fathers.

SouthernGent on December 10, 2007 at 11:16 PM

The minimalness of the initial description she gave, very understated, was great, refused to call herself a heroine even though she is, and gave all the credit for her being able to save others, to God. Am sure she’s dealing with the emotional fallout of having killed a man, and clearly she didn’t enjoy it, but she knows she saved many more lives yesterday.

Kudos to a very courageous lady.

Firsthand account of the Von Maur shooting

“If I had a gun, I have a perfect shot.”

Hopefully the MSM won’t be able to ignore the different outcomes in these two stories.

mad saint jack on December 10, 2007 at 11:17 PM

The best tidbit was in the Denver Post article. Two other (male) security guards had the chance to ‘engage’ the shooter and did not do so.

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_7683781

Heroic, indeed.

rockhauler on December 10, 2007 at 11:21 PM

A real life Sarah OConner.

Impressive woman.

bains on December 10, 2007 at 11:25 PM

Notice the fact of a fast. Preparation no doubt. Also notice the phrase fasting and prayer. Because without prayer fasting is just going hungry. Very good Jeanne, what was meant for evil God will turn for good. I pray for those that lost loved ones.

mjkazee on December 10, 2007 at 11:42 PM

Sarah Connor heroic truly.

From rockhauler’s link.

Larry Bourbonnais, a combat-tested Vietnam veteran, said it was the bravest thing he’s ever seen.

Bourbonnais, who was among those shot by a gunman Sunday at New Life Church, watched as a security guard, a woman later identified as Jeanne Assam, calmly returned fire and killed the shooter.

“She just started walking toward the gunman firing the whole way,” said Bourbonnais, who was shot in the arm. “She was just yelling ‘Surrender,’ walking and shooting the whole time.”

Wow.

Buck Turgidson on December 10, 2007 at 11:06 PM

Not a good idea. If you’re licenced to carry … then carry. Asking permission will most likely get a “no” answer.

Better to ask forgiveness than to later be found dead in a pew.

Weak, hungry, one puny gun against who knows what…but more fire-power for sure, while she was being shot at…..how can you not believe she had some supernatural help?

…and she’s single, and available….something tells me she’d insist on dating Christians.

I pray there is someone with her connections and resolve around if anyone starts shooting around me.

jjjen on December 10, 2007 at 11:54 PM

That couldn’t be easy for ANYONE, much less a Christian. May the Lord grant her peace.

mimi1220 on December 11, 2007 at 12:04 AM

The AP Wire is now running with a byline to help distract from the obvious success here by this woman with a concealed carry permit. The byline is Reluctant Heroine. I predict Rush will be all over this tomorrow as the Drive-Bys will march in lock step on this one. You’ll hear reluctant heroine in every report. That’s the talking point.

The fact remains that the best way to stop these random shooting sprees is for more people to be armed with either lethal force, taser, pepper spray, etc. If the perps and crazies knew that there was a good chance that someone nearby would be armed, based on an increase in self-defense and concealed carry statistics, they’d never commit these heinous acts in the first place.

You gotta love this one. A church going Christian female with a concealed carry permit, who saves many lives. This is the anti-gun lobby’s worst nightmare.

JeffB. on December 11, 2007 at 12:09 AM

That, my friends is Heroism.

Bless her heart.

Thank god that there was an armed “hero” there to protect the innocent.

This substantiates my argument that :
Anti-gun laws only help the homicidal maniac.

P.S. she wont be single for long.

TheSitRep on December 11, 2007 at 12:11 AM

I would marry her in a heartbeat. Damn

bbz123 on December 11, 2007 at 12:16 AM

Gregor, the law in Ohio prohibits carry in houses of worship without permission from the house. According to the laws, doing otherwise is a crime.
I put as much effort into carrying legally as I do safety. We’re trying to improve the laws here. Until then, I need permission.

Buck Turgidson on December 11, 2007 at 12:18 AM

Is she single?

kevcad on December 11, 2007 at 12:25 AM

And for those that didn’t catch it, Pastor Boyd said that Jeanne Assam was the one that suggested increasing security following the Arvada shootings. Yet another way that she made a difference yesterday.

Larry Bourbonnais, a combat-tested Vietnam veteran, said it was the bravest thing he’s ever seen.

Dang. Thanks for that link, rockhauler.

Spirit of 1776 on December 10, 2007 at 11:53 PM

Larry Bourbonnais knows bravery, too. While everybody else was running away, he ran toward the shooter unarmed to see if he could help, and ended up getting wounded distracting Murray. He even tried to get one of the male security guards that wasn’t shooting to give up his gun, but the guy just waved him back. At 59 years old–he must have trouble walking with balls that big.

ReubenJCogburn on December 11, 2007 at 12:32 AM

Gregor, the law in Ohio prohibits carry in houses of worship without permission from the house.

Buck Turgidson on December 11, 2007 at 12:18 AM

I didn’t know that. Neeeeeeevvvver mind. With Christian Churches liable to be a number one target for American Jihadists … maybe I’d just move instead, lol.

Gregor on December 11, 2007 at 12:35 AM

This will actualy bring up some very good questions for the American Christian Clergy out there.

The United Methodist Church now preaches that there is no justified war. That no violence is justified… that the death penalty is wrong…

Nice stance in a perfect world where others protect you…

Very good thing this good woman did NOT turn the other cheek…. others would have died.

Romeo13 on December 11, 2007 at 12:39 AM

A helluva story. May Jeanne’s bravery stand as an example to us all.

One person did make a difference.

Jeanne, you are a hero(ine)!

USCitizen on December 11, 2007 at 12:53 AM

That is the perfect example of why all religious people are nuts. It is too bad that Assam is so frigging crazy that she credits God instead of her experience, training, and her own character. Too damn bad.

It’s also very unfortunate that the families of the victims that died, not only in this shooting but in the one the day before, and in the mall shooting a few days ago, have to listen to some sanctimonious religious fanatic tell the world how “God was with her“.

I guess all the other people who died weren’t quite worth the attention God deigned to give to Jeanne Assam.

He must have had better things to do. I’m sure the mother of those two girls who died will take great comfort in the fact that God waited until after he killed them before being with Ms. Assam. Maybe there was a close football game somewhere that had his attention at the time.

The person who built your car, gave you your job, cooked your dinner, paved the streets, built the hospital, they are all nuts…let’s hope you never are ill and have to go to a hospital, 96% of doctors are religious (and nuts), the hospital you go to was probably built with church funds, those nutty religious people…going around saving lives.

She was a hero, and you weren’t…don’t be so jealous.

Allah,

Wrong quote. The money quote is what the pastor said “She is a church member, not a paid mercenary”. So, I take he believes it is good to be an unpaid church member and kill in self defense than the be a paid public servent and kill to protect others lives.

He should do some serious praying that he never needs one of the paid mercenaries one day.

Helloyawl on December 11, 2007 at 2:27 AM

Jaynie59 on December 11, 2007 at 1:22 AM

Is it too much to ask that you refrain from spewing the hatred that obviously consumes you long enough to show some respect for the dead? I’m not religious, but that doesn’t make hating everybody that is religious an integral part of my day. But then I don’t think the whole world revolves around me, either. Get over yourself and grow the hell up.

ReubenJCogburn on December 11, 2007 at 2:30 AM

Forgot to add to my previous comment that if it had been a paid mercenary instead, God would have been with them also.

Jaynie59, I’m going to do something “frigging crazy” for you… heck, call me nuts, but I’m going to say a prayer for ya’.

Sometimes I’m just too danged sactimonious for my own good. Sorry to offend Jaynie, but there are worse things than being offended…

Fighting Eyeball on December 11, 2007 at 2:56 AM

Outstanding story, and without Drudge, blogs, etc., how many would hear of it outside the immediate area?

One member of the pastoral staff of my church owns a gunshop, and there’s no telling from day to day how many folks are heavy at our services. A lunatic can manage to hurt several folks by surprise anywhere, but there’s zero chance of walking out alive here.

Jaynie59 on December 11, 2007 at 1:22 AM

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I’m going to respond as if you’re serious. The man had over 1,000 rounds of ammo. God being with Ms. Assam is what gave her the nerve to be calm while facing a larger, more heavily armed, and clearly insane assailant, and end his barrage before there were 200 dead, instead of two.

Of course that doesn’t make it easier on the family who suffered the loss of their daughters, but would you rather they were joined in their grief by dozens more families?

Christians blame evil on evil people, and honor God with credit for all good things. People like you blame evil on God, and honor people with credit for all good things. Think carefully on which is more likely true.

I had also read that one of the members were shot as he tried to rush the gunman! Sounds like there was a lot of courage going around in that church!

JellyToast on December 11, 2007 at 7:12 AM

After the gunman went down, Bourbonnais asked Assam, a volunteer security guard with the church, how she remained so calm and focused.

Bourbonnais said she replied:

“I was asking the Holy Spirit to guide me the entire time.”

leanright on December 11, 2007 at 8:20 AM

I guess all the other people who died weren’t quite worth the attention God deigned to give to Jeanne Assam

Your question is as old as time. Why does God allow pain and suffering? Why does a loving God allow murder, rape and torture? Why do babies die? I suppose the question could also be turned around to “Why does God show mercy on anyone?” It is a big question that gets to the very root of the Bible. There is not an easy answer. It is a hard answer. A cold hard answer! I don’t understand all the pain in the world,, but I know that God is good! I do not know why this happens or that happens,, but I know that God is merciful and just! We are not a “fallen” people. We are a people at war with God! Man does not “fall” into sin! He jumps into it! And I know this,, that as hard as it is for those families of those murdered people,, they have a hope! As great as their grief is, they have the promise that is eternal! Those people murdered are now in a place as real as ever this world seems! Heaven is a real place with real ground to walk on, real buildings to live in, real people to walk with and God that you can see face to face! Hell is also very real! And most of the world walks just above it as though walking above a blazing fire on fine thin veil! That murderer is also experiencing a promise at this very moment! He is not walking around laughing and joking with all the sinners as the world would love us to believe! Everything he has ever feared in his deepest darkest moments is now come upon him! He is being crushed and torn to pieces in a place ruled by beings that hate him, and all that waits for him is the second death! Even the satisfaction he thought he would have by murdering those more worthy than him he has lost!

JellyToast on December 11, 2007 at 8:23 AM

God has an enemy on this Earth….he wants us suffering and dead….sometimes he succeeds, I’m pretty sure he was pissed off that he didn’t get more that day. The girls are with God right now….God is with their families….lots of people who wouldn’t be…are still with their families.

But….hey…let’s hate God for not doing “enough” but “enough” would be to torch the entire world….so I think I’ll let Him decide when He’ll do that.

jjjen on December 11, 2007 at 8:52 AM

A few folks were talking about their state laws not allowing them to carry a concealed weapon on church property. Please check the specific language of your state’s law. They may have to post legal signage prohibiting you from carrying. In Texas, I am allowed to carry a weapon on church property UNLESS they post the exact regulation prohibiting it:

Handguns and other weapons can not be carried at schools or on school buses, at polling places, in courts and court offices, at racetracks and at secured airport areas. The law also specifically prohibits handguns from businesses where alcohol is sold if more than half of their revenue is from the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption, and from locations where high school, college or professional sporting events are taking place. You may not carry handguns in hospitals or nursing homes, amusement parks, places of worship or at government meetings if signs are posted prohibiting them. Businesses also may post signs prohibiting handguns on their premises based on criminal trespass laws.

According to my CCP training, the EXACT regulation prohibiting firearms must be posted in clear view of all entrances to the property in question:

If you want to prohibit license holders from carrying concealed handguns on your property, state law requires you to post a sign that says: “Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (trespass by holder of license to carry a concealed handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (concealed handgun law), may not enter this property with a concealed handgun.” The sign must be written in both English and Spanish in contrasting block letters at least one inch in height, and must be displayed in a conspicuous manner clearly visible to the public.

Anything less than strict adherence to the above does not require my voluntary adherence. The whole point is that those who wish to restrict my Second Amendment rights on their property can only do so by abiding by the stringent guidelines above.

Remember, I’m in Texas and the laws vary by state. I just suggest you look at little closer at the language of the laws in your state.

Hope this helps.

Fortunately, I’m in safe part of the country (in a vast region of 2 territories, The Northwest Territories and the Territory of Nunavut, with a combined population that couldn’t fill a US college football stadium, 2 police officers were KIA at routine calls in the space of 1 month). hillbillyjim on December 11, 2007 at 4:20 AM

Wow. Calm down a bit. Bad Penny wasn’t calling the event itself funny, just the answer to the question the reported asked.

It’s possible to find something funny out of something so horrible without finding the entire situation funny.

In fact, I find this part of the story amusing:

“First, I called him ‘Coward’ then I called him ‘S—head’ ” Bourbonnais said. “I probably shouldn’t have been saying that in church.”

The man was faced with a life and death situation, yet he’s looking back on it and thinking he shouldn’t have cursed in church.

I might even disagree with him. In reading the article it seems that it was exactly that curse word which got the gunman’s attention and possibly saved lives.

Jaynie59 on December 11, 2007 at 1:22 AM

So many people have commented on your quote here, and at first I was pissed at you. Just a short time after this horrible tragedy, here you are insulting these dead people and the majority of the world that actually believes in and worships God.

But after thinking on this a little, I just pity you.

You’re right Jaynie. Because the world would be such a beautiful place if nobody ever died. If only God would take away free will and save everyone from death, we could then all starve shoulder to shoulder in this gorgeous world of 987 trillion people and enjoy life as God’s puppets.

Gregor on December 11, 2007 at 1:49 AM

Good point. People tend to blame God for death as though they really want people to live forever and they complain about the evil in the world without realizing that they’re complaining about having the ability to choose.

Kickin’ ass for the Lord

Ochlan on December 11, 2007 at 11:21 AM

I am an atheist … but even I know the answer to that one, Jaynie59 …

Free will.

If you are a believer then you have only two ways to handle this question.

Either we have no free will, have only the illusion of choice, are all God’s robots, and are completely non-responsible for our decisions.

Or we all really have free will … which means that bad people will still be able to do bad things to good people.

If you are going to debate the existence of God with the religious, try to do your homework first. You make the rest of us atheists look bad.

If Christians are “nuts” as you say, perhaps you need to move to one of the beautiful Middle Eastern countries, lets say perhaps, Yemen? Perhaps Saudi Arabia is more your style? I’ll bet we can get you to Somalia. You just might fall in love with their beautiful Christianless beaches!

In case you have forgotten, our Country (that’s the US of A, BTW), was founded by Christians with Christian values. Were they all “nuts”? If you think so….mmmmmmbu-bye. Have a nice life elsewhere and enjoy your gorgeous new blue Burqa!

Hmmmm:
Mall = gun free zone
Colleges/Schools = gun free zones
Church = murdering thug free zone

Ms. Assam, well done madam, well done indeed!

She was very impressive, stuck with God and did not falter in front of the media. It is always good to see a Christain not apologizing for being a Christian. What is also important is that it is always good to be proud of a fellow American’s actions. I wish this had never happened, but it did. She is a shining example of what it means to be an American protecting her beliefs and her “family.”

Liberals can’t handle self-defense.

SCARBOROUGH: One person with a gun can make a big difference.
BRZEZINSKI: Oh gosh, no! No, no, no.

From the AP headline in breaking news. The libs finally found a silver lining for themselves. They needed this.
Assam, 42, said her faith allowed her to remain steady under pressure.

“It seemed like it was me, the gunman and God,” she said, her hands trembling as she recounted the shooting during a news conference.

Assam is a former police officer who worked in Minneapolis from 1993 to 1997, but was fired from the department for lying during an internal investigation, Minneapolis police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said Tuesday.

Sgt. John Delmonico, president of the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, said police were investigating a complaint that Assam swore at a bus driver while she was handling an incident on a city bus.

“In giving a statement about the incident, she was untruthful and she was fired,” Delmonico said. Assam denied that she swore at the driver, but her actions were caught on tape, he said.

The union arbitrated the case and the arbitrator upheld the termination, he said.

Assam’s home phone number is unlisted and she couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday

.
It is completely irrelevant to her heroism, but now they will be happy.

so he shot him self in the head, and didn’t take the time to die from the other 5 bullets.

Jaynie59, your reasoning seems to parrallel the shooters reason for killing Christians.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

I appreciate you correcting Jaynie59. Christians need it at times too.

But I suggest an accurate list of the options. Your no-freewill option needs correction. It is not accurate of many Christians that differ from freewill Christians. As a predestinationist, I respectfully disagree with your characterization of it.

1. No-freewill: I actually believe in freewill but it is a chain that limits us to do only what we want to do. Beyond the chain is what we ought to do or what God would have us do.
2. Illusion of choice: This goes with the first. I believe that man is free to make any choice he wants. It is not an illusion.
3. God’s robots: There are no robots in the Bible. :-) There are pots, however.
4. Non-responsible for decisions: We are completely responsible for our actions. This is a paradox. But it is logical and Biblical.

I recommend reading all of Paul’s letter to the Romans.

God knows you don’t need any help with that.

leanright on December 11, 2007 at 12:17 PM

So, let me get this straight:

1. A religious person saves lives
2. An atheist asshole mocks her
3. A more sensible atheist defends her
4. A religious asshole mocks him

Symmetry.
