eh, i’d rather doubt it. in fact, i’d suppose that the protests were left/center-left. hence, the choice to smear him as a “pinochet”. a number of the more prominent dissident groups in iran are explicitly marxist-lenninist and are disenfranchised on that basis.

it would be a comforting fantacy to imagine that these protestors are like the venzuelan protestors (who themselves are better described as a group as small “l” liberals than conservatives) but the fact is that there’s barely such a creature as the center-right street protster here, let alone elsewhere.

Actually, looking this up, there were a handful. The other protesters turned them over to the police.

I doubt it. In countries like Iran, protesters are likely to get further by going along with the dogma of the dictatorship and protesting individual leaders than by protesting against the entire state apparatus. Think about it: Do you remember seeing any anti-Mao protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989? These folks may or may not believe in “Death to America,” but, even though most Iranians hate the government, they aren’t willing to slaughter the sacred cow of Khomeini (and thereby risk getting slaughtered themselves).

Nevertheless, like the Chinese students, they’re on the right path. Let’s hope their fate is better.
