Note how the TV networks fill the void with even more game shows, talent competitions, and other "Reality" shows, for which no one gets a script-writing credit.

Will we see Hollyweird start cranking out unscripted documentary films as well?

Woody Allen is immensely talented. I've enjoyed almost all of his films, and he really knows how to work a camera and a script. I loved Crimes & Misdemeanors, especially where he compares Alan Alda to Mussolini.

He's also a genuinely nice man. He'll take time out of his day to talk to a fan.

The laugh track actually startled me because there was nothing to laugh at. That, and my volume was too loud. I wondered "what did I miss?" Of course, I'd missed nothing - except that minute and a half I'll never get back.

p.s. I'm normally SO not in favor of the union thing, and frankly I think that the writers should just go to each entity seperately to make deals and skip working out something with the Hollywood Moguls.

I'm content watching re-runs or nothing myself, but for different reasons. The writers aren't getting paid for a lot of things they're writing. Those tv episodes you can watch on your computer? Special episodes of shows written specifically for affiliate websites? They don't get paid for those. Back when their contracts were made, this form of media entertainment wasn't available.
That's just one example.
If you weren't getting paid for your work, you might feel like striking too.

But Annie Hall? Pfffft. How many times does one have to hear the line “Well, la-de-da” in one movie?

flipflop on December 10, 2007 at 6:02 AM

Actually I thought that was the only good line in that movie. If you saw the movie you can still hear it with that silly grin: "La dee da, la dee da, la la."

Well, that line and, "We never have sex - just three times a week" from him, and "He wants it ALL the time, he's an animal - like, three times a week!" from her.

This was asinine but one of his early movies Sleeper is hilarious.

Not at all funny. No amount of laughtrack will convince otherwise. Manipulation. WE need them?

For god's sake, this country is crawling with so-called "writers." Hundreds of thousands of them. What it lacks is good readers. Nowadays, it's a rarer skill, and a harder task.

And the same comment goes for the hundreds of thousands of "artists" -- the sheer number of which so often prevents the good ones from being winnowed from the chaff of all the others, and properly discovered and encouraged, and appreciated, and collected, in time to make a difference. How many connoisseurs and intelligent collectors or encourages of painting and drawing do you know? And how many people have you heard of, real-estate tycoons, hedge-fund operators, the lot, have you heard of spending vast sums of money on celebrated crap that they have been told by some cunning art dealer playing to their ignorance and sharing, perhaps, the same execrable taste or no-taste-at-all, that this or that "artist" -- preferably "cutting-edge" and preferably doing something involving video or photographs or performances or anything at all or perhaps they merely read it in Time, or ArtForum -- produces work is "really significant" and besides, "it's a great investment."

Given my juvenile sense of humor, I thought All You Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask) was great. Sleeper was good, too...how can a movie with a device called the "Orgasmatron" not be funny?

But Annie Hall? Pfffft. How many times does one have to hear the line "Well, la-de-da" in one movie?

Excellent question! I’ve never seen any of his movies and have no desire to do so but he always has movie stars talking about what a great director/writer he is. Why?

He's a really good director, some of his shots are the equal of the best directors in Hollywood (this is generally unappreciated outside the industry because he makes comedies). He does brilliant parodies of Berman's cinematic techniques. His writing is funny and original. He mastered the telling of jokes from years as a stand-up comedian.

If you're ever curious I'd recommend the following films: Sleeper, Love and Death, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters and
Crimes and Misdemeanours
. The Purpose Rose of Cairo is supposed to be quite
good too but I haven't seen it yet.

P.S. I'd also happily, happily contribute as a charitable donation a scripted ending to the one with Tim Robbins holding a time bomb in his hand.

No script needed really, just sound effects.

I think you'll really like it.

whole series of film shorts with the same "speechless" motif. no writers, no dialog.

it's ironic, really - they're striking for a piece of the online pie, but they're giving away content on YouTube.

whatever. long as there's lolcats, who needs cable?

His video is one installment of short films supporting the writer's strike. Some of them are okay, but some are just stupid. It's like, okay morons, we get the point. You support the writers.

Excellent question! I’ve never seen any of his movies and have no desire to do so but he always has movie stars talking about what a great director/writer he is. Why?

I haven't seen a Woody Allen movie in years, even before the Sun Yi stuff. So I can't comment now, but his early movies up to Manhattan we're very good and very funny. When he started to get "serious," that's when he went downhill. Maybe you had to live through the 70s to appreciate his movies from then.

One other thing I'll give him credit for: One year when he was up for a bunch of Oscars he stayed in New York because his band had a gig that night, and he decided he'd rather do that then fly to Hollywood to hang with the phonies/lib crowd.

Since I'm not a member of the WGA...

FADE IN-

INT. MANHATTAN APARTMENT. DAY.

An INVISIBLE ALIEN moves the arm and hand of the waxy corpse of WOODY ALLEN, one-time funny man ("Bananas") and wrecker of his relationship with "Rosemary's Baby" star Mia Farrow by having an affair with her young adopted daughter Suun Yi.

The alien also activates a vintage laugh track machine, which Allen had planned to sell on ebay that evening, but, after having drunk a tea cup full of hemlock (in a mock-Socratic homage gesture) was now in no position to unload.

Fade Out

___________________________________________________________

This is all considered high tragedy in the Andromeda galaxy.

A suicidal child molester being used as a grotesque hand puppet by a transparent being could actually win a "Fglxxybie" (the extraterrestrial equivalent of the Oscar).

Rhymed dialog was transmitted subconsciously through semiotic memes implanted in the gray scale patterns.

In essence it boiled down to:

"Never screw with a lady
What has had Satan's baby."
