Video: “Semi-Pro” trailer

No true “Anchorman” fan can read the description without salivating. Another ’70s period piece with Will Ferrell — and Woody Harrelson, with “Kingpin”-esque bad hair to boot? It’s destined for greatness. It’s a sure thing.

Watch the trailer. There are no sure things in life, my friends, except death, taxes, and Mike Huckabee.

Who told Ferrell that what he should really be doing is more slapstick?

i think, much like that ice skating movie, we saw the best parts in the trailer.

Hey, Jim Carrey tried to get respected as a serious actor. Look how that worked out. (It’s a shame, too. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was brilliant, imho.)

Might as well stick with your bread and butter.

That’s a depressing thought, if so.

And, Andre 3000 in the cast, too! I’ll give it a try on principle, but it doesn’t look promising.

What’s next, roller derby?

trubble on December 7, 2007 at 6:59 PM

Roller Derby. Yeah, roller derby. Get my people together, meeting time!

iurockhead on December 7, 2007 at 7:05 PM

This could have been funny. But it isn’t. That sucks!

Probably.

The bear thing made me laugh, though.

Whenever I see any clip of something with Will Ferrel in it I can always tell how much of it is Ferrel’s writing by how unfunny it is. Obviously he was very involved in the writing of this one. It’s too bad. He’s a very funny actor but is not at all a funny person. How did he get it in his head that he’s a comedian?

greggish on December 7, 2007 at 7:14 PM

Not sure why, but I kept hoping Tim Meadows would appear and kick Jackie’s butt.

Got a Basketball Jones

I had that single! I remeber my dad humming the song and being annoyed because he had it stuck in his head. If he’d seen that video/cartoon, he woulda had a stroke.

Bad Penny on December 7, 2007 at 7:22 PM

Wow. This is like a cross between Boogie Nights, Anchorman, Kingpin, and the Harlem Globetrotters. Sign me the hell up.

As for Ferrell, the only thing he’s done that I haven’t liked are his “Funny or Die” sketches, which are generally kind of lame. Otherwise I think he’s pretty brilliant, in an everyman kind of way.

World B. Free on December 7, 2007 at 7:22 PM

Dude, I was totally rolling. Ferrel is a comic genius. This is going to be hilarious! Thanks for the clip.

ThackerAgency on December 7, 2007 at 8:04 PM

damn. Ham stole my comment. Any flick featuring Outkast has my vote.

Um, y’know, minus Idlewild and all that.

Nah, The Billy Carter Autobiography coming out soon, staring Drew Carey as Billy Carter, Sean Penn plays one of his idols Jimmy Carter

StuLongIsland on December 7, 2007 at 9:29 PM

That looks horrible. I’ve liked most of Ferrel’s movies, but that’s not even going in the Netflix queue.

You left out Mike Huckabee raising taxes

No doubt Will will be semi-nude in Semi-Pro.

Blechh!!

All of Will Ferrell’s characters are exploiters of mediocrity. Where the average and inept are glorified to be special.

Egfrow on December 8, 2007 at 1:26 AM

You have to be a mental defective to like Will Ferrell’s Movie’s……..Which I am! So I look forward to this one. None of his work is fine art but sometimes you just need mindless diversion.

Fandango on December 8, 2007 at 7:22 AM

Will Ferrell is about as funny as Jim Carrey and I’ve seen my last movie of either of them. Sorry, they are not funny!

sabbott on December 8, 2007 at 9:14 AM

Do you still have to pay to see movies?

Hening on December 8, 2007 at 10:28 AM

YES!!!

Jim-Rose on December 8, 2007 at 12:28 PM

I like Will Ferrel okay, but I don’t like that his brand of comedy has become popular enough that just about every comedy that comes out now is some real over-the-top expanded skit instead of, you know, a real movie.

All the Ferrel comedies and many others behind him now are just like a skit on Saturday Night Live expanded into a feature.

Comedies didn’t used to be like that. Ghostbusters, Spies Like Us, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and other modern comedies from the eighties could not have been “skits” on Saturday Night Live – they were actual movies with real plots and funny stuff coming from the plots, not an “outrageous skit character” expanded into a whole film.

And is Ferrel going to just keep this up until he runs out of sports to do movies about or what?

daviddunn on December 8, 2007 at 1:09 PM

Hahaha that should be good.

aengus on December 8, 2007 at 5:47 PM

Woody Harrelson is a schmuck.

Tzetzes on December 8, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Where are the conservative comedians ? The DirectTV Comedy channels has to be blocked on the remote. Mostly because of language, alone. Then, I recall the harrangue of anti-Bush, anti-republican, and anti-conservative that that channel always broadcast.

oldelpasoan on December 9, 2007 at 10:05 AM

daviddunn on December 8, 2007 at 1:09 PM

Likely, and sadly for us, not until he dies of old age.

TwinkietheKid on December 9, 2007 at 12:53 PM

I think Will’s primary motivation is money. I think his proposed method of attaining that money is to throw a bunch of crap up against the wall and see what sticks.
