Video: MSNBC’s David Shuster smears evangelicals as hayseed torture fanatics
posted at 5:00 pm on December 7, 2007 by Bryan
Thanks to our friends at NewsBusters for catching this one. It’s so far over the top in its slander of evangelical Christians that it must be viewed to be fully appreciated. Shuster reads a scathing NYT editorial about Mitt Romney’s “Faith in America” speech and agrees with it. Things roll downhill from there.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: This is the same New York Times editorial page that ran columns after George W. Bush was elected in 2004 saying evangelicals were closer to Osama Bin Laden than our allies in Europe. That of course came from Garry Wills. Then Maureen Dowd said that evangelicals were going to take us back to the Dark Ages. I think there is some hostility, on the New York Times editorial page, toward evangelicals.
DAVID SHUSTER: They still get it right on occasion.
SCARBOROUGH: Once in a while, but Alabama beats Auburn once in a while, too.
SHUSTER: We all must believe in football, and I suppose if we all go to Pensacola [Joe’s hometown], we’ll have a sidetrip where we’ll go to a revival and then go to Guantanamo Bay and torture some people just for fun.
Shuster’s religious tolerance and fidelity to the facts speak for themselves. He’s a bigot. And so is Mika Brzezinski for chuckling along with him, agreeing, and piling on with the reference to legal counsel.
To think, this crew replaced Imus after his bigoted “nappy headed hos” flap. If anything, this gang is worse.

yeah Schmucky Shuster, they go down to Gitmo and force them to listen to Arriana Huffington and the Dixie Chicks

Oh yeah, and Pensacola’s REALLLL proud of Screw-Your-Borough, too.

Shouldn’t this space be filled with something about Huckabee?

I don’t mind making fun of evangelicals myself, but David Shuster is a dreadful bore.
Enrique on December 7, 2007 at 5:05 PM
Yeah, and Alabama once beat Auburn 9 straight times…oh and Shuster is an ass.

You stay classy, MSNBC.

I really hopes this gets at least some MSM play. NBC and MSNBC are going hardcore off the deep end.

Shuster’s a tool, but I think the NYT is actually right in this case.
Big S on December 7, 2007 at 5:14 PM
I think that entire NYT editorial should be put up on this website for parsing. Frankly, it’s hard to say who is worse – Shuster for his idiotic stereotyping, or the Times for what they have written. Take the first paragraph, for instance:
Whose low standards are they talking about? Mitt’s or Hillary’s digging into Obama’s writing as a third grader and raising big bucks from Chinese dishwashers?

How do you torture a hayseed?
Frozen Tex on December 7, 2007 at 5:14 PM
In my opinion Shuster was making fun of the caricature, using exaggeration, and the import applied both to the NYT and to evangelical/right-wingers, with Scarbarough as stand-in for the latter. Not really very funny, but scandalous only if you think Gitmo and revival meetings are so sacrosanct that they can never be used in any jokey context. Doesn’t mean NBC and its affiliates aren’t nearly unwatchable, and don’t have a lot to answer for. The Erin Burnett “monkey” joke was a lot worse.

I want to be offended, but I’m waiting for Reverend Huckabee to tell me what my soul should allow.

Force the hayseed to watch MSNBC.

Au contraire, this space ought to be filled up with some updates on Rockin’ Rudy, who has all but disappeared from the HA hotlist these past few days.
That hitpiece listed earlier today from the NY Daily News (the poor mans NY Slimes regarding decades old hatred for rudy)about the fair Judi and some taxi rides, just doesnt cut it.

Yeah, that’d about do it.

I truly despise few people in this world and the voice quaking, boot licking, David Shuster is on that short list. I had to stop watching Hardball (where he is often featured)years ago because it was really bad for my health.

and then they break away for a seasons greetings to all the Islamo extremist jihadists in their audience.
oakpack on December 7, 2007 at 5:34 PM
I’m pretty sure forcing anyone to watch MSNBC is considered torture. That’s what they’re using in Guantanamo, from what I understand.
There are only 10 people who watch MSNBC anyway – Olbermann and the 9 people who know they’ll be on “To Catch a Predator” as the predator.

“…the soft bigotry of low expectations.”
I believe that’s msnbc’s mission statement, is it not?
No wonder these freakin bottom feeders are in the ratings toilet.

Torture is listening to this deceptive dullard.

Aahhh, BUT, they didn’t insult a black with words only blacks can use.
Insulting whites or Christians is just AOK, perfectly fine, no problem at all in this country . Right?
Just ask Sharpton, he’s the frickin “expert” …or maybe someone should ask a Boston firefighter.

One cannot understand what one doesn’t know. Those elite types know nothing of American at all.

Pretty harsh way comparison but there’s some truth to it. Dislike of homosexuality and secularization, along with a desire to put faith in politics are just a few of the similarities.

What I can’t figure out is how they can tolerate the suffering they have been enduring all their lives living and working in this nation founded by Christians??!! You know,, I just feel so so bad for these smart, rich elites! They have got to be suffering so so much! I imagine the reason they are still in the US is because they are still at the end of the line to get in to all these other wonderful non Christian nations like Russia, China, Nigeria, Iran, Iraq, etc. Perhaps they should go to Europe and wait there. Of course,, there is still a little Christian influence over there, but not near as much and so they should be ever more free in all respects!
JellyToast on December 7, 2007 at 6:37 PM
I don’t know which characteristic Shuster exhibits more… sleaziness or mental retardation? It’s a close tie.
D2Boston on December 7, 2007 at 6:40 PM
And don’t forget about the Christian-wa placed on the heads of that hack who wrote “The Golden Compass”, Nicole Kidman, and that guy who played James Bond. And the Christian-wa on Hitchens. They’re all being pursued by Christians and needing so much security.
And the riots and burnings of villages by those wacky Christians after the Bible was used as toilet paper in Bethlehem by those sweet and innocent Palestinian terrorists. And the mass killings after each release of the episode of South Park where Jesus was boxing people.
Seriously, guess what? People vote for their reps based on their own values. Why Christian values scare people so much is beyond me. I mean, it’s not like THEY use suicide bombers and beheadings against their enemies.

Hell’s running out of space for people like this.
They’ll have to start packing them in at muslim hell.

If these Shuster, Oby, ( Oh, this list is long) types
had to endure about 1% of the pressure these candidates
endure not to mention the President . . . They’d fold
and puck all over themselves within 5 minutes.

I actually watched a few minutes of this morning’s show. Don’t ask me why. Missed this little beauty, but I am not suprised. Plenty of “red meat” comes out of this show daily. Mark Levin seems to play audio from the morning shmoe every week or so. As for Shuster, I wanted to email MSNBC, to see if they would get him to say Scooter Libby over and over until his head exploded. Shuster’s reaction to Scooter being set free was priceless. As much fun as I had reading DU, Kos, and HP, the first few hours of watching Shuster implode was great. One of the best days of 2007, if you ask me.

Yes, anybody that doesn’t like homosexuality is just evil. All the same, whether you hang a homo after brutal torture, or pray with them or for them to stop sinning. That’s why the Boy Scouts must go. Little fascists not allowing homosexual issues to be presented to their “troops”.
Just exactly like Islam, and living in a fundamental Muslim country.

But your response to crr’s scattergun comment is definitely warranted.

Like I said before,it seems the lib’s have no clue
who the enemy really is,while they don’t want to ruffle
any feathers with islamofachists, but they like to get
right into the mud with the religious right, there is a
phrase for a guy like this,”David, this is so low, your
playing handball up against the side of a street curb!”.

I tried sending the following email to that apologist magnum dopus:
Very nice job. I’m surprised you didn’t convert to Islam on the air while you were at it. Either that or you went ahead and did that on Sept 11th, just to make sure you didn’t a get a “Theo Van Gough” at the stoplight.
Have a nice day.

I’m not sure why we care what the hell NBC does…NOBODY is watching! Their evening programs get somewhere around 100,000 viewers in a nation of 250,000,000 people! We must accept that we have 100,000 boneheads living with us and give them their own news network (News Boneheads Channel) and simply move on. I could care less what little David Schuster has to say. He is a mental midget and a silly little twit!

In the Bible Herod promised Salome anything if only she would dance for him. She demanded the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
John the Baptist had publically condemned the corrupt behaviour of her family.
He was a fire and brimstone preacher, see luke 3:17 His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
Christ said of John (John 5:33-35)
He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light
When you warn of hellfire, and you shine a light on those who may face judgement, it gets nonbelievers nervous
entagor on December 8, 2007 at 1:15 PM
Since a tongue-in-cheek method didn’t sink in, how’s about direct: Christians dislike homosexuality, this is true. But it is the ACT, not the person, that is disliked. I have one or two homosexual acquaintances. I don’t dislike them. I disapprove of their choice. I also have acquaintances whom I know have committed other actions I disapprove of. Each is treated the same way in regards my opinion of their choices.
In your ignorance and dislike of Christianity you compare that, with those who HATE homosexuals, not just their choices, and who would kill them all for those choices. Guess what, those same people would kill you for being an infidel, something no Christian would do.
Don’t be a sheeple. Don’t get on the same wagon as Whoopie Goldberg, Rosie, Helen Thomas, Hillary, et al. Christians believe in something larger than themselves, and act on those beliefs. Imperfectly, just as anyone else. But we don’t initiate fatwas or cry jihad or blow ourselves up in a vain and godless attempt to get our way. Because it isn’t OUR way we care about, but God’s, and He doesn’t need our help. He especially doesn’t need us mucking things up with misguided violence.
