Video: Chuck and Huck on faith and the golden rule

It’s very vanilla, although you’ll perk up at the end as Huck starts applying Christian principles to policy — albeit in safely non-specific terms, of course, lest anyone get the impression that he thinks government should be an agent of charity. I wonder if there isn’t something that Huck and I agree on after all.

Interesting to note how his campaign’s prioritizing these chats, too. This is the third in a series of five. The first was Chuck explaining — or rather, not explaining — why he’s supporting Huckabee and the second was about immigration. Evidently faith, not terror or the economy, comes next on the list of topics of import.

Meanwhile, here’s a new Internet ad campaign they’re putting out featuring some decidedly un-conservative-ish voters explaining why they’ve switched to Huck. Ask yourself who these are aimed at vis-a-vis who the faith chat with Chuck is aimed at. He’s covering all his bases.

Am I the only one getting tired of the Huck and Chuck show?

This is getting almost as annoying as the Hewitt’s lapdancing for Mitt.

thirteen28 on December 7, 2007 at 1:49 PM

This guy just scares the crap out of me. I swear, if he get’s the nomination, I really do not know how I will vote.

peski on December 7, 2007 at 1:50 PM

True Fact: the reason they’re always seen together is because Huck is Chuck Norris’ bodyguard.

saint kansas on December 7, 2007 at 1:50 PM

Can we call them Chucklebee?

If there is a God, He will stop this now. He-Man bolt of lightening, earthquake, tsunami ~ I don’t care.

Dear Lord,
Deliver unto us peace in the valley, quiet among Thine airways and media. Render unto Your humble servants no more of this insipid, divisive, hypocritical, pandering religious blithering. Forsooth.

Amen.

Did they film those in a cave?

Vizzini on December 7, 2007 at 1:54 PM

Did the blonde girl in the last video say that, “He appeals to me because he has a record of big government?”

Or did I hear that wrong? I’ve tried to listen to it a few times and it sounds like she says that every time.

They’re hiding from the only thing Chuck Norris fears: John Bolton’s mustache.

That’s how I heard it the first time but I think she says “good government.”

Allahpundit on December 7, 2007 at 1:57 PM

Just watched the video, and here it is, the truth, plain and simple.

Huck really needs to just skip the whole disastrous four-year presidency stage and go straight to building houses with Jimmy Carter.

He’ll be happier, we’ll be happier, and a whole lot more will get done.

Thank you and good night.

Good government? What the heck does good government mean? It sounds like something a second grader would say.

Zetterson on December 7, 2007 at 1:59 PM

They’re hiding from the only thing Chuck Norris fears: John Bolton’s mustache.

I’ve reconsidered my position on the ’stache. I think Bolton should keep the ’stache and grow some muttonchops.

He could really pull off the Chester A. Arthur look, which would be great for him as VP.

Sounded like that to me, too. See Allah saying it’s “good”, but I keep hearing big every time. Yeah, I know it’s probably my subconscious and all, but it really does sound like big to me. Who says “good government” anyway?

Be careful what you say around here. Any Republican is better than a democrat, or so the saying goes. If you even consider voting for a third party candidate or someone else you might as well vote democrat, or so I’m told around here. You will be castigated as the reason this country is falling apart. Toe the party line, and vote the party ticket. That’s what we do in these parts.

Can anybody here please explain to me how religion got to be such a hot topic for the GOP?? I realize, on the whole, the GOP is far more based in the religious right than the liberal left, but between Romney and Huckabee I am getting really sick of the “I am a man of God” sketch.

Lest we forget, bin Laden always said he was a man of…well, you know where this is going.

God is not at issue in this election. Immigration, illegal aliens, terrorism, the economy, etc… These are the issues!

Yes, heaven forbid fiscal conservatives use the same threats social conservatives used when Giuliani was going strong.

If Huckabee is the nominee, I’ll hold my nose and vote for him in the general. All we were asking if Giuliani was the nominee was that social conservatives be willing to do the same. Guess that’s too much to ask, though.

But if anyone is getting really annoyed by Chuck, I recommend “Way of the Dragon” as a soother.

Maybe I’m too much of a purist, but I wasn’t planning on voting for Huckabee myself. But it’s good to know that you’re consistent. I’m looking for someone who can be defined as “conservative” and for that to be the whole story, without the fiscal/social adjectives thrown in. I think Fred’s my guy.

[pedestrian on December 7, 2007 at 3:21 PM]

Pedestrian, presidents don’t make budgets, heck, they don’t even manage the budget making process on the admin end. Advisers do all that. What counts is having good principles, defining good policies built on good reasoning, and hiring the right people to follow through on them.

Dusty on December 7, 2007 at 3:44 PM

Can anybody here please explain to me how religion got to be such a hot topic for the GOP?

Wellsir, I suspect a big part of that is because that is how the mainstream media sees the red states, aka Jesusland. So if Joe Editor tells Jane Reporter to cover the GOP primary, that’s what she’s going to expect to see.

This time around, both Huckabee and Romney (but mostly Huckabee) are servin’ it up raw. So it’s been self-perpetuating.

Jane Reporter: “Governor Huckabee, is it true that you’re one of those Bible-thumping evangelical Jesus freaks?”

Huck: “Why, yes, Jane, that’s right. I am.”

saint kansas on December 7, 2007 at 3:50 PM

Because there are evidently enough one-issue religious voters to propel a left-leaning obscure governor to national frontrunner in the course of a few weeks.

Allahpundit on December 7, 2007 at 3:53 PM

is it just me, or is it amazing that Huckabee has such a growing base of support among conservatives, but hardly any of them are Hot Air readers.

tizzidale on December 7, 2007 at 3:57 PM

Except me, of course. I get it. . . you’d rather have anyone but Huck. Time to pile on.

I am not a one-issue voter. I’d much rather vote McCain, but he was thrown under the same bus, by people like you, years ago.

tizzidale on December 7, 2007 at 4:03 PM

is it just me, or is it amazing that Huckabee has such a growing base of support among conservatives, but hardly any of them are Hot Air readers.

Not really. Perhaps it means Huckabee has an inability to garner support among fiscal and national security conservatives. Maybe it’s a sign of limited appeal.

Slublog on December 7, 2007 at 4:06 PM

I would consider myself both. I just find it amazing that the same people who but BushII in office won’t even consider Huckabee.

I considered Huckabee. Then I looked at his record and un-considered him.

Slublog on December 7, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Yes. Guiliani is a fiscal conservative and strong on immigration. Oh? What? He isn’t? But he’s so cool . . .

But Mitt is, surely, right? Wasn’t? Is now? Not sure? Well, surely anyone who doesn’t support him is nefariously suggesting he’s unelectable because he’s Mormon.

Fred? Who the hell knows anymore. If it’s not the first two, it’s no one.

tizzidale on December 7, 2007 at 4:24 PM

It’s clear from your comments on this thread and the other that you failed your civility one.

I’m not looking for a perfect candidate. There is no such thing. However, I am looking for one that does not have Huckabee’s record on taxes, illegal immigration, and nanny-statish thinking.

To me, it’s all about who I would trust in a crisis. Rudy has been my frontrunner since day one. The mob, 9-1-1, pulbic floggings over his personal life, you name it, the guy is clutch.

But Huck is earning my respect too. His record is a series of pluses and minuses but the way he calmly thinks on his feet and gives reasoned, polite and pointed responses to ‘gotcha questions’ is impressive. This dude is cool a a cuke. That, I respect.

DrW on December 7, 2007 at 4:58 PM

I am not a one-issue voter. I’d much rather vote McCain, but he was thrown under the same bus, by people like you, years ago.

tizzidale on December 7, 2007 at 4:03 PM

So THAT’s what happened to McCain. I was wondering where he’d gotten off to. The last time I saw him he was crawling around under a bus looking for a peso he’d dropped…. So you’re saying the bus ran over him? You’re saying that somehow it was our fault?

FloatingRock on December 7, 2007 at 5:22 PM

Yes. Guiliani is a fiscal conservative and strong on immigration. Oh? What? He isn’t? But he’s so cool . . .

tizzidale on December 7, 2007 at 4:24 PM

No, he’s not cool either, for the opposite reason as Huck, IMO. Basically what is happening is that the conservative coalition that Reagan built is splintering off into its divergent groups that have little hope of accomplishing anything on their own. Together the Republican Party stands; separate it falls.

The problem is that I’m not so sure that the Rudy supporters and the Huck supporters are going to overcome their political-greed and back a candidate that has a broader appeal to the base, like Fred or Mitt. The Rudy supporters may not like Fred or Mitt as much as Rudy, but they probably like them better than Huck. The Huck supporters may not like Fred or Mitt as much as Huck, but they’re better than Rudy.

Will they compromise? If so, it better start happening soon because it’s almost too late.

FloatingRock on December 7, 2007 at 5:33 PM

tizzdale:

“is it just me, or is it amazing that Huckabee has such a growing base of support among conservatives, but hardly any of them are Hot Air readers.”

Probably because after defending Huckabee’s religious credentials, there’s just not much left to talk about — and what there is won’t help him with Republicans and political conservatives. Maybe social conservatives who’ve been blasting Giuliani as a liberal realize they’re in no position to tout Huckabee’s record in the same venue. I wouldn’t be surprised if his supporters here are just keeping their heads down.

JM Hanes on December 7, 2007 at 5:57 PM

Huckabee’s religious credentials

Who CARES???!!!??! Who cares, who cares, who CARES???!!

Do I sound like a petulant child? Well, I feel like one.

I. Am. Sick. Of. RELIGION. Yours. His. Or. Theirs.

Or NOT. Yours. His. Or. Theirs.

Maybe not petulant. Maybe trapped in an insane asylum, where the same song just plays over and over, but with different singers in the same 8′ by 8′ padded space. Like waterboarding, only holier. Than thou.
