HamNation: The Gideon Yago interview

Her entire career’s been building to this moment. Expectations were so high, why, it was almost bound to be a letdown.

Recorded at the MTV/MySpace youth forum with McCain held earlier this week, which is one of those events the GOP has to do knowing that it won’t win them a single extra vote but might help preserve those handful among late teens and early twentysomethings that they’ve already got. Between interviewing barely sentient college kids and having to field MILF questions on the Factor, it’s high time the Hammer had someone interesting to talk to on camera. Any suggestions? She’s trying to make lemonade here. All we need are the lemons.

You’d better hope Cilizza is wrong about the youth vote turning out this time, because if they do, we are well and truly dead. Click the image to watch.

Ain’t gonna happen. Everyone and their dog goes after the youth vote with every election. And they are contantly disappointed. Because 18 to 25 year olds are too busy getting stoned and drunk and trying to “get it on” to vote in any election.

Not that I’m talking from experience or anything. ;)

It’s good to see he’s been keeping busy since leaving Hogwarts.

Even more reason to legalize drugs & porn for the masses…those that are too monkey-brained to see beyond such destructive distractions shouldn’t be voting anyway.

PS. Those are some real man-hands MKH has…give her a lobster

Very nice Mary Katharine.

Hey! I’m 25 and I don’t do those type of things. I also don’t watch MTV anymore.

Ok, it’s Friday night I must get back to my youthful debauchery.

ah yes …. glorious youth….

I don’t even want to think about the “youth vote”… I’m so with Gutfeld, unless you’ve worked and paid your own way for a number of years, and got dicked with taxes, you don’t deserve to vote. Seriously though, there should be a test. Questions like “Did Bush lie about WMDs”, etc…. if you answer yes, you’re too stupid to vote. We could eliminate a lot of idiots with stuff like that.

Anyway, I despise Gideon Yago. And much of it has to do with his name. Not that I have a problem with the name, in fact “Gideon” actually sounds kind of cool. But it bothers me that I KNOW MTV wouldn’t have hired him if his name was Bill Thompson. Having the name “Gideon Yago” is just so hip, and goes with his progressive rock style and smart glasses, etc. His just so edgy and hip. Like the others “Sway Calloway” and “SuChin Pak”. Ugh, I hate MTV.

BTW, can anyone tell me if I’ll just be annoyed by this lib, or does MKH make it funny enough to be worth watching. Like Chuck Norris/Huckabee clips, I won’t watch this (for fear of vomiting) unless someone tells me it’s really worth it.

I agree. The 18 year old voting law was passed when I was 19 or so. At the time I was in the military and thought ‘of course I should vote!’ I have since changed my mind, I think 21 years is too young in most cases, most people start to ‘grow up’ at about 25 years.

allrsn on December 7, 2007 at 10:28 PM

did that have a point? besides watching MKH do anything, that is?

You raise an interesting point I forgot to mention. I feel there should be a military exception on that. The right to vote is the least we can give them. And as I said (ranted) it’s more about idiocy than it is age. While I did start off saying I agree with Gutfeld about preventing young people from voting, that’s not entirely true, as there are plenty of hard working “young people”, but there are just as many spoiled, essentially late-late teenagers.. many of whom are the same through their 20s, often even in to their 30s. So yeah, it’s more about the type of person than age really… it’s just that the correlation is often there, so it’s easy to call it an age thing, which is what I (incorrectly, I believe) did. Again, I feel that they should be subjected to a quiz of very basic questions that reveal whether someone is simply an ideological loon, but military members have certainly earned their right.

terryannonline on December 7, 2007 at 9:45 PM

Well, you’re no fun. I’m 31 and other than the getting stoned part, I still do the other two. (P.S. I’m kidding you, terryannonline, and you kids, get off my lawn!!!)

Do you all remember the “Vote Or Die” campaign from 2004? Yeah, it didn’t work. No evidence anywhere of increased “youth voting” or of people dying from not voting. Didn’t Paris Hilton promise to vote or die and she did neither? Interesting. It’s like she’s a hypocrite or something….

mjk on December 7, 2007 at 11:53 PM

Wow, well as a member of the uninformed stoned mass (I’m eighteen) it’s great to have that vote of confidence going into the first election that I’ll be able to participate in. Just because the youth vote doesn’t often skew Republican does not mean you should dismiss us so quickly. Really thanks for not thinking of me.

I actually watched the John McCain dialogue (yes I still watch MTV), and I thought it was very good. He was humorous and engaging. More so than any of the other debates a candidate was allowed to express a real opinion, mostly because the questions were styled honestly. The Republicans really do need to experiment with these “new forms of media”. It would serve the Republicans well to engage in this forum, or at least to find one where they can speak as candidly and eloquently in support of conservative issues.

DO NOT tell Ted Kennedy that

Gatordoug on December 8, 2007 at 12:22 AM

I not sure that WaPo guy was right about the Messiah’s effort, but I actually think if Hillary is the candidate, young women (at least college women) will turn out. Entire Women’s Studies Departments will show up en masse. Hill is not hard-core commie enough for them, but she’s got the right plumbing.

I think the “first woman” thing will draw some, and the election could be close enough that every 1/2% or 1% extra of any demographic could be crucial.

RightWinged on December 8, 2007 at 12:37 AM

I wish MKH had a blimp.

How come a loser like Ron Paul has a blimp and a knockout like Mary Katherine Ham doesn’t?

Vinnie on December 8, 2007 at 12:55 AM

This would’ve been the perfect interview for MKH to ask 3 softball left-leaning questions and then a “homosezwhat?” as her fourth question.

In this situation, it’s 99% certain she would’ve received the expected response.

Her entire career’s been building to this moment

Yeah, her only talent is making silly videos. McCain won’t even talk to her.

B26354 on December 8, 2007 at 1:48 AM

Yeah, MK is the only reason to watch this.

The youth vote is (a) always overestimated and (b) always more Republican than the MSM ever expects. Regardless of what the polls say right now, if the GOP puts up a decent candidate, they’ll get more of the “youth vote” than Hillary.

The reason that organizing youth is important in politics has little to do with their voting, and everything to do with their value as campaign volunteers, plus building the movement for the future.

Oh boy, looks like we’ve got a new one. Hey Trolly.

By the way, is anyone surprised that the current #10 Yahoo! search result on this person’s user name (B26354) is this:

I don’t dare click on it, for fear of committing a crime in doing so.

(keep in mind, search results change very regularly, so if anyone doesn’t see it and wishes to challenge me, dig at least a page or two deeper… you’ll find that I’m not kidding.)

Also, B26354, how’s your plea/petition for the Bladerunner box set working out?

RightWinged on December 8, 2007 at 3:38 AM

For what it’s worth, I’m on Rock the Vote’s mailing list, and the last mail I got was in June for the stupid Live Earth strokefest. And the last mail before that one was in January.

One email every six months? You’re doin’ a bang-up job there, Mitch.

…it’s high time the Hammer had someone interesting to talk to on camera. Any suggestions?

Since you asked, a certain anonymous New York blogger who is the blogosphere’s personal DVR comes to mind.

steveegg on December 8, 2007 at 7:34 AM

I don’t get the youth vote thing…I registered to vote right before I turned 18 (had to go downtown to do it back in those bygone days) and have voted in every election since. Same with my kids.

Of course being conservatives might have something to do with that.

Bob's Kid on December 8, 2007 at 7:54 AM

Hammer did a great job showing she fits in with those in attendance.

Also, the youth vote is always a surprise and the demoncrates discount this group unless they are able to use a deleterious element of their lifestyle to claim they are “here to help” because you can not help yourself.

MSGTAS on December 8, 2007 at 9:23 AM

She has an Alfred E Neuman thing going on with her mouth.

She needs a few weeks with Professor Higgins.

Hening on December 8, 2007 at 10:25 AM

The 18-25 year old crowd might vote democrat over republican now. The most important thing to this group is “world peace” and “social justice.” But once they start working, hit their stride and start making some real money, the whole idea of sending more of their hard-earned money to Washington will change their minds and they will gradually grow more conservative. I know. It happened to me.

pullingmyhairout on December 8, 2007 at 10:55 AM

Sigh. I just watched the video and I’m embarrassed that it went up like this. My video editor left out the most important part of the admittedly rather fluffy affair, in which Yago conceded that the 2004 stunt was duplicitous, calling it push-poll style, and regretted that it had caused problems. Anyway, it looks like I took Yago at face value and let him off the hook totally, which I didn’t. I caught the problem and we tried to correct and re-upload, but the corrected vid never went up. My apologies.

marykatharine on December 8, 2007 at 11:45 AM

MKH – thank you for the comments. I thought my “bored out of my gord” response to the video was an indication of undiagnosed brain damage. Glad to see it was not the product you had in mind.
