I really hope that they know where these guys are at and they are simply watching them to see what comes of it. If not and some thing does happen and no one was watching these guys, the back lash will be monumental.

eh. I think maybe, just maybe, that this is a big-to-do over nothing in the greater sense of things. About a dozen trainees over a 2 year period out of what? Hundreds? Thousands? I wouldn’t be surprised if our own desertion rate isn’t much better.

I understand that these are Islamic trainees who, just by their belief in the idiocy that is Islam, makes them dangerous because of their possible intentions. I would think however that those that have been missing for over 2 years would have already done something if that had been their plan.

I agree with those who have posted above that these folks saw the awesomeness that is America and just couldn’t leave. I can’t really say that I blame them.

Not a well-phrased statement from TRADOC spokesman:

“Nothing that this command is aware of would suggest that any of those students who departed from their training or returned back to Iraq pose any threat to the United States.”

There are in fact many ways to suggest that these Iraqi dudes are a threat to the US. I would send a detachment of MP’s after them.

Army officials yesterday confirmed that five Iraqi military personnel whom the Army had been training disappeared between 2005 and 2007. They did not know how many other Iraqis sponsored by the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy may have done the same.

Judging by their actions, it appears they are quite willing to take the risk of living in the USA as "undocumented" residents. Maybe they are hoping for another amnesty. After all, there have been 7 amnesties given to undocumented "residents" since 1986. Not all of the illegal aliens come to the USA via the open and porous borders. Many illegal aliens simply over-stay their visas, because they know they can count on another amnesty.

Years ago (like 1988) I watched four Brooke and Garcia class frigates go through the process of being “loaned” by the US Navy to Pakistan. They had all these same problems back then. Desertions, theft, etc.

My point here is that some of this may be a “cultural thing” more than the good guy/bad guy analogy. Just something to consider.
