Audio: Democrat candidates asked “Why do Muslims hate us?” Updated

The Democrats debated on NPR today, and were asked “Why do Muslims hate us?” If there’s a more tiresome question that has arisen from the ashes of 9-11, I’m not aware of it.
“Where’s my aircraft carrier?” was, essentially, the vast majority of Americans’ reaction after 9-11, liberal and conservative alike, but the rubber band has snapped the 9-10 left back to its former, pacifist, blame-America-first self. That NPR question arises from that attitude that all the hate directed at us must somehow be all our fault, and not motivated by anything other than our own actions. The word you may be looking for to describe that attitude is “narcissism.” Liberals corner the market on that stuff. And several of the Democrat candidates betrayed their worst, most liberal, knee-jerk blame America first instincts.
“Because we are trusted so little” – Joe Biden
Because of “the bullying, selfish, abusive behavior” of President Bush and his administration. – John Edwards
“John’s point is right, but I want to broaden it a little. If you were a Muslim overseas listening to Rudy Giuliani saying they want to come over here and kill you, you would get the impression that we don’t want to talk.” – Barack Obama
“This has been a vacuum for a long time. We don’t know their culture.” – Chris Dodd
The Muslims who attacked us on 9-11 hated us enough to attack us before we were in Iraq. They attacked us in 2000, they attacked us in 1998, they attacked us in 1996, etc etc. Was all of that hate the result of Bush bullying? Does Muslim hate violate the rules of space and time? Do they really hate us due to our lack of knowledge about their culture? Might there have been some other motivator apart from American actions? Hm? Osama bin Laden’s 1996 fatwa against us was based primarily on the fact that we were basing troops in Saudi Arabia. They were there protecting Muslims against other Muslims.
Is it possible, Democrats, that there is anti-American propaganda out there that spins opinions against us no matter what we do? Is it possible, Democrats, that the various governments that infest Muslim lands feed their people a steady diet of hatred for the West and America in particular? Is it possible, Democrats, that some Muslims hate us because of who we are (non-Muslims) and what we are (free) and who our friends are (Israel)? Should we change these things about ourselves to please them?
Answer me this, Democrat candidates: If we deserve Muslim hate, then why do the Muslims who have had the most constant contact with us, and with our military at that, have the highest opinion of Americans? I’m talking about Afghanistan, former home of al Qaeda, where not only do a majority of the Muslims not hate us, they want us to stay around.
Seventy-one percent of Afghans support the United States’ presence in Afghanistan — and where the U.S. is seen as strongest, its approval ratings peak.
But..but…Silky says we’re a bunch of bullies.
Despite some deterioration, most Afghans continue to see the U.S.-led overthrow of the Taliban as a good thing — 76 percent, although down from 88 percent last year — and to support U.S. forces remaining in their country. And 65 percent of Afghans still view the United States favorably overall, down from a peak of 83 percent in 2005 but still remarkable compared with America’s image in most other Muslim countries.
If you go through that poll I cited, you’ll see that our popularity in Afghanistan is sagging, but it appears to me based on this paragraph that the sag isn’t a result of hating America. Quite the contrary, actually.
Not all trends are negative; many Afghans in this national poll express forbearance, and half retain optimism, in the face of the country’s difficulties. And criticism of the United States is largely focused on its performance, not its presence.
Which means the more terrorist butt we kick, the more Afghanis tend to like us. The same seems to be true in Iraq’s once unruly al Anbar province, where the local Sunnis have turned toward the US and away from the hardcore Muslim mujihadin in their midst. Why? If we’re ignorant, infidel bullies, why are they siding with us?
One thing is clear: The Democrats who answered that question without either challenging its premise or by essentially blaming the US for being hated ought to be kept as far from the White House as possible. They don’t understand the war or the basic complexity of the world, they never have and they never will.
Update: One of the names that ought to come up in discussions of the sort the Democrats engaged in is Sayyid Qutb. He’s the Egyptian who came to America in the late 1940s, witnessed decadent sock hops in Colorado, and declared us all more or less worthy of death. He went on to found join the Muslim Brotherhood, which eventually gave rise to pretty much all of the Islamic terror groups that plague the world today. He was the uber Islamist who hated America long before it was fashionable. Heck, he hated America before George W. Bush was in kindergarten. Why, oh why, did Sayyid Qutb hate us?
The Democrats would also do well to watch a little Arab TV once in a while. This link will take you to LGF, which has a clip from Kuwaiti TV. I’ve been to Kuwait. The people there are cosmopolitan by regional standards. They’re outwardly friendly. They’re our allies because we saved their hind ends from Saddam. But if this TV audience is representative, they’ll also just as soon cut your head off as look at you if you run afoul of Islamic law. Is this America’s fault, Democrats?

Its a valid question, but the democratic response was pretty pathetic

Goes to show the mindset of liberals. They hate America and all it stands for. They are truly the enemy within.

You know, I’m at the point with Uberfuhrer Edwards that all I really want is a bumper sticker with “F&#$ John Edwards”. Before you accuse me of sinking to DKos level, show me any initiative Bush has put through that is anything like Edward’s flat-out claim that he will force you into his health care plan, or put you in jail. While you’re doing that, show me where Bush or any republican has even come close to Edward’s above unvarnished insulting smear of this country. No, not even Ron Paul has come close to that.
I don’t want the left to win, period. Edwards is a special case, however. I truly think he wants total and complete power, and has a maniacal ego ready to unleash if he were in the oval office. I think he is the voice of the DKos and DU types and he wants to basically prove that he can dupe any bunch of soccer moms into voting for the Silky Pony because it’s pretty, and because he has lofty notions of a police state disguised as free government services to all (with a minor fee for handling in the form of massive tax increases).
This pony needs to go to the glue factory.

To find the root cause of the problem.
offroadaz on December 4, 2007 at 4:30 PM
I think the question itself is valid, but the answers are likely to be, in reality, centered around the idea that some people are just no good.
Funny thing is, some Democrats actually do believe this…about Republicans.
Defense Guy on December 4, 2007 at 4:30 PM
Thanks Bryan. I wish every American could read your post today. I also wish the Democrats you refer to could somehow be vanquished to Tora Bora for a couple years.

I think the “Gulf of Tonkin” remark on house floor and claiming the Commander in Chief is plotting to impose Martial Law come pretty close. and then of course the 9/11 truth pandering, NAU, “Trialateral Commission”, etc.

Thank you, Thank you, thank you, Bryan. . .
Somebody ask the democrat candidates that question. Should we abandon Israel to appease the Muslim fanatics? Should we abandon Christianity to appease the Muslim fanatics?
If the answer is NO to both questions, then should we fight the fanatics to keep what it is that makes us who we are?

Blaming America for their hatred of us is like the Muslims’ ubiquitous blame for the rape of women…. on the women.
Vanquisher on December 4, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Trilateral Commission does exist, so it’s not a smear to talk about it. NAU is a reasonable concern given how the EU and UN work. 9/11 Truth pandering bothers me too, but he’s more refused to condemn it rather than open support it.
As for his first two remarks, they are historical comparisons of reasonable recognition, flawed as they are. Edward’s baseless verbal diarrhea hasn’t even a hint of legitimacy.
MadisonConservative on December 4, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Will somebody please let Obama know that they’ve already come here to kill us. I know he’s young but he ought to be able to remember September 11, 2001 even if he doesn’t recall the other attempt that occurred on Billy Jeff’s watch. Well maybe he was writing his kindergarten thesis and wasn’t paying attention.

So what did Thailand ever do to them? Are these clowns even aware of the surge in violence the “restive” southern portion of Thailand. That is the phrase the press uses.
Why do they hate Thailand?
LakeRuins on December 4, 2007 at 4:45 PM
Uh, not really. What I said is factual. Bin Laden wanted to drive the infidels off the holy lands. He also wanted to take over Saudi Arabia and make himself king and caliph. Paul extrapolates backward that we were the bad guys in Vietnam and extrapolates forward that we’re deservedly hated now. He blames America first, consistently. But the fact is, we were protecting Saudi Arabia against Saddam Hussein. If Osama bin Laden has a problem with that, that’s his problem and doesn’t justify a “chickens come home to roost” argument like the one that’s at the heart of Paul’s foreign policy.
Bryan on December 4, 2007 at 4:47 PM
Thailand? Crap they hate Denmark, how insane is that?
Oldnuke on December 4, 2007 at 4:48 PM
Valid? No it’s not. This nation has been nothing but generous to other.
Don’t confuse “why do they hate us” with “what did we do to deserve that hate”. We will be better able to destroy our enemy if we know what motivates them, and we must destroy them.
Defense Guy on December 4, 2007 at 4:48 PM

Dash on December 4, 2007 at 4:52 PM
We know what the Jihadist motivations are and where they come from, it is their ideology. Laid out in Sura 9:5 and 9:29, they divide the world into two camps: The “House of Islam” and the “House of Non-Islam” and are commanded to bring Jihad via the sword to us infidels in the “house of non-islam” and set up a global Caliphate.
not all that different than the Nazi’s tryin to take over the world and kill all the jews, or Imperial Japan trying to conquer the world…or the Soviets trying to spread Soviet Communism to the entire world…..they are evil, all of these ideologies are linked.

They hate us because the alternative is to hate themselves. Bryan’s right. They’ve been fed a steady diet of hatred toward, not just us, but Western Civilization in general. For them, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people.
They were supposed to be the ones running the world for thousands of years. They were supposed to be the ones in charge. Savages who treat women like animals, who still defecate in the street, who still think lopping off someone’s head with a dull scimitar for looking at them cross-eyed constitutes law and order.
History has passed them by and they can’t stand to think it might actually be their fault.

Good article. I think Osama Bin Laden knew that without an existing Caliph he needed to justify declaring a defensive jihad so he cited the presence of US soldiers in Islamic holy sites (in reality they were stationed 20-30 miles away). Al-Qaeda are not averse to spin when it suits them.

FDR and Truman are spinning in their graves.
This goes beyond our domestic political battles.
This brand of Western guilt over who and what we are will eventually destroy us.
The Western world is losing the will to stand up for what it is.
Multiculturalism really means denying your own cultural roots, and stating the falsehood that all cultures are equal.
It is the Western world, founded on Judeo-Christian values, that has created freedom and prosperity in the world.
But the left will continue to erode our sense of pride in who and what we are as a civilization until one day, we’ll wake up, and we won’t have a civilization anymore.
Europe is already well on its way to being predominantly Muslim. It will be by the end of the century.
And the U.S.A. will find itself as the last beacon for what the West once was.
Sometimes I am terrified at the world my children will live in, if we do not change our ways. If we do not stop the “Blame America First” attitude, and start standing up for the greatest nation the world has ever seen.
Why do they hate us?
Maybe these will help:
“We are not fighting so that you will offer us something.”
We are fighting to eliminate you.”
Hussein Masawi, Former leader of Hezbollah
Sura (9:30) – And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah,
and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah…
Allah (Himself) fights against them. How perverse are they!
How the Qu’ran views non-Muslim religions
“We don’t make a distinction between civilians and non-civilians,
innocents and non-innocents. Only between Muslims and unbelievers.
And the life of an unbeliever has no value.”
Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed, after the March 11, 2004

I find it ironic that in Sayyid’s mind, and all jihadists after him, we’re the decadent and self-absorbed society.
And yet it is Islam that promises an afterlife paradise full of wine and affluence and 72 virgins waiting to fulfill the martyr’s every carnal desire.
All you have to do is kill unbelievers and die in the process to get it.
But we’re the decadent and morally repugnant ones.
Oops, guess I just got myself on the “Infidels to Behead List” for questioning Islam. Wait, first CAIR will sue me, than the Sudanese backed jihadists will behead me.
While I’m at it, all my teddy bears are named Mohammed too.
Hawkins1701 on December 4, 2007 at 7:14 PM
The question I have is, Why don’t Americans hate Islam more? We have exercised enormous restraint when dealing with the atrocities of the Religion of Peace.
Ultimately, I don’t care why Muslims hate us–I am not about to change myself, or my country, in an effort to please them. In the battle between Islam and the West, only one of us can win, and it’s not going to be them as long as I can do anything about it.
While we’re posing questions about America, here’s one: Why do Democrats hate us so much?
DrMagnolias on December 4, 2007 at 7:21 PM
Of course! Jeez, Bryan, you really don’t understand just how much they hate us.
Seriously, though, it’s okay not to challenge the premise. They hate us because Osama thought it was an insult for non-Muslims to defend Muslims, especially defending “corrupt” improperly religious Muslims (Saudis, Afghans, Hashemites) and/or defending against “pure” theocratic Muslims (Taliban, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood). That’s why it goes back to around 1920, before even Bush’s dad was born.
calbear on December 4, 2007 at 7:35 PM
The question of whether or not Europe will become predominantly Muslim will be settled long before mid-century one way or another. A pertinent question is whether the US will side with the Muslims or the Europeans in the coming conflict.

That is very well said, and I was thinking the same thing about the Dhimmicrats. It’s a bizarre, self-destructive thing, they’re just chasing their tails with the “Why do muslims hate us” crap. I should ask my Dad sometime, though I dread talking politics with him, he’s gone so far left it scares me sometimes.

They (Political Muslims) HATED US before we were even a constitutional republic.
Muslims (most are decent people) don’t hate us one bit. They are coming to the USA at an increasing rate, taking advantage of our freedoms, jobs, and relative peace.
They don’t hate us, their MASTERS (Imams, Clerics, Sheikhs, etc. hate us.)
Islam is more than religion, it is a political ideology that wields a sword.
Of course the liberals spout on about Christendom as if it is still a menace today, forgetting all the reformations that have happened the last 300 years…

Here is a parable for our times, told just for the Democrats appearing on National Pinko Radio for this “debate….
You are a Democratic Candidate for President, your opposition to the war in Iraq is public and well known, and you are trying to score “points” with your far left constituency. Standing next to you is your father’s brother, Sam. Now, Sam is just kind of standing around. Sam is about 6 foot 4, 285 lbs, built like a fullback. Sam’s got the reputation of being the last man standing in a bar fight, and he’s just come come home for a particularly vicious bar fight. He needs R&R.
A small, thin, wiry man, weighing maybe all of 105 lbs, and not over 5′2″ tall, steps out of the crowd and walks up to Sam. With out saying or telegraphing a thing, the guy slugs Sam in the solar plexus. Sam, being a weight trainer and very fit, would normally have tensed his stomach muscles if he knew it was coming, but he is totally unprepared — Sam simply wasn’t paying attention to the wiry man, you see. So. Sam is stunned, out of breath, and he has sunk to his knees. He’s not seriously hurt, mind you. Just stunned with the breath knocked out of him. He begins to get to his feet, his face purple with fury.
You turn to him and say, “Sam, don’t hit him back. Look at him, he’s probably mad at you because you took the parking spot he wanted. Peace brother! It’s wrong to retaliate.”
Sam, conscious of the disdainful looks your compatriots are giving him, does not strike back. Instead he nods and simply says between gasps, “Forgive me, I didn’t know that I offended you.”
The wiry man, on the other hand, feels emboldened. After all, he just sucker-punched Big Sam and made him drop to his knees. So, wiry man reaches into his pocket, puts something over his hand, and hits Sam hard in the face, dropping him like a poleaxed ox.
The wiry man was wearing “brass knuckles,” you see, allowing him the ability to really hurt Sam with this one punch.
Sam is unconscious with a concussion and a broken jaw. Half the teeth on the side where wiry man hit are broken or knocked out. As Sam struggles to regain consciousness, again you say to him: “don’t hit him back, you’re above all that.” Sam, being groggy, simply shrugs, wincing in pain, and attempts to stand up.
Finally, Sam struggles dizzily to his feet. He’s hurt pretty bad, now. Sam knows that the wiry man is still standing there, but he just can’t focus his eyes, and barely sees the wiry man pull a knife.
Striking like a cobra, the wiry man steps forward, and slits Sam’s throat from ear to ear.
As the final blackness overtakes Sam, he sees the wiry man turn to you, with his bloody knife raised high, and hears him shout “Allah Ackbar,” and begin the killing stroke.
Sam’s last thought is how stupid he was to let you talk him out of pounding the wiry guy into the pavement when he the chance, when he was still capable of fighting. Now, you, his nephew, are going to die and there is nothing he can do about it.
Your last thought as he begins to slit your throat is “Uncle Sam, help!!”
You already know the moral to this story, Democrats.
And tonight, you Democrats wore your “Axis Sally” dresses…
Potestas Democraticorum delenda est!
georgej on December 5, 2007 at 3:14 AM
First, the question “why do Muslims hate us” is a loaded question with a bogus premise, which is that Muslim hate is legitmate with American behavior as the cause. Not so.
Bernard Lewis, the Princeton professor emeritus of Middle Eastern history, says that the Muslim objection to America is that, in their view, it is wrong for non-Muslims to hold power over Muslims. This view was put simply by Zacarius Massoui in his trial in Virginia for participation in the Sep 11 plot when he was asked why he wanted to attack America. He replied that it was wrong for America to be the superpower, that Islam should be the superpower.
The Muslims hate us out of simple bigotry, ie they believe their religion should rule the world and all other ways of thought – religious, political, philosophical – are blasphemy which must be annihilated. You can see this at work when Muslims come in contact with non-Muslims anywhere in the world. Muslims seek always to dominate other groups, not cooperate. Muslims always make war on their hosts and neighbors, where ever they go in the world. They simply accept no non-Muslims.
For the best example of this, take the case of Saudi Arabia. No nation in human history has benefitted more from another nation than Saudi Arabia has benefitted from the US. We lifted them up from abject poverty into luxury, built their country including the road net, electrical infrastructure, financial management, communications, health care, and countless other elements of infrastructure. Normal humans would have grateful for such generosity, yet Saudis are driven to hate Americans by their Wahhabi indoctrination. Our generosity to the Saudis simply enabled their pathology, gave them the money to attack us. The inhuman response of the Saudi Wahhabis was to mass murder Americans and celebrate their deaths.
The Islamic world does not recognize any good deed done by America, but rather spins anything America does in the most negative way possible. It’s like pouring sugar on a fire ant mound. The fire ants don’t send you a thank you note for all that nice sugar you dropped on them. They use that sugar to make more fire ants to bite the hell out of you. In their view, fire ants must rule the world.

So that’s a valid question?
Fine, then I’ve got a question. What’s with the attitude that believes that all motivations and actions are initiated by free-thought actions in the Western world, and all actions by the non-Western World are simply “reactions”?
Why is the presumption that all series of actions have a cause in the Western world, and an effect in the non-Western world?
Isn’t it possible eventually that something could initiate in the non-Western nations, or do they not have free will? Isn’t it possible that American, or other western nations actions could be caused by a root cause somewhere else, or does only America have this “free will” required to initiate actions and events?
Because if every action has a root cause in the U.S. then we’re simply calling the rest of the world unthinking reactions to U.S. free-willed actions aren’t we?
Given the presumptions behind the question, isn’t this a racist, elitist and condescending point of view? I thought Republicans were supposed to be the racist ones, or did I miss when that changed?
Oh well, maybe some day Liberals will believe that other nations might have thinking people capable of their own actions, and their own responsibilities. Until then, all blame must (eventually) fall on U.S. because all chains of events must be initiated here.
Is this really a tolerant and accepting view of other cultures?
