MNF thread: Will the Patriots go to 12-0 against the Ravens?

I say they do. The Ravens are in a state of free fall and Patriots…aren’t. The only X-factor here is the weather — it’s freezing in Baltimore and maybe that’ll make a punt roll weird or something. Without a whole lotta luck, the Ravens don’t stand much of a chance.

Since the game itself isn’t likely to produce much interest, I’ll leave you with this:

Yesterday, they named him PorkChop. Today, his name is Ferrous. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs say they’ve changed the name of the team’s mascot. Team officials say the switch was made when it was brought to their attention that the initial name could potentially be offensive to members of the community.

“…members of the community.” Now who would get offended at a pork-related mascot name?

Update: Well, I’m genuinely surprised. PorkChop didn’t offend Muslims, it offended Hispanics.

Two days after naming its mascot “PorkChop,” the Philadelphia Phillies’ new Triple-A affiliate abruptly dropped the moniker after receiving complaints from Hispanics that it was offensive.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, whose mascot is a large, furry pig, had selected PorkChop from more than 7,300 fan submissions. The team, which begins play in 2008, announced Monday that the mascot will be named “Ferrous” instead.

General Manager Kurt Landes said he heard from several Hispanics who said PorkChop was derogatory.

“We were really unaware of any negative connotations with the word ‘pork chop,’” he said. “If it offended a few, it’s a few too many.”

Guillermo Lopez, vice president of the Latino Leadership Alliance, said he was called “pork chop” when he worked at Bethlehem Steel decades ago.

“If my parents were alive, they’d be having fits,” said Lopez, among those who complained to the team. “It meant much more to them than it does to Puerto Ricans now in the Lehigh Valley.”

They need another 26 yards to get into FG range.

Mallard T. Drake on December 3, 2007 at 11:44 PM

into the wwind? more like 36 yards.

lorien1973 on December 3, 2007 at 11:46 PM

The Patriots have 2 tough games left. Korn-hole is an idiot. They scraped by the Ravens. Who else could beat them? How about the Steelers or the Giants.

Mallard T. Drake on December 3, 2007 at 11:46 PM

No way.

mesablue on December 3, 2007 at 11:47 PM

oh!

RightWinged on December 3, 2007 at 11:47 PM

nice catch but game over.

lorien1973 on December 3, 2007 at 11:47 PM

OMFG! Football ROCKS!!!

SouthernGent on December 3, 2007 at 11:47 PM

All you Patriot fans can start breathing again. They were impressive by not faltering and keeping after it.

The Steelers will give them a test next week.

Mallard T. Drake on December 3, 2007 at 11:48 PM

An epic choke job by the Ravens. 6th straight loss.

However, game tape of the Ravens running the ball on the Pats is going to be a hot commodity on YouTube tomorrow.

The Pats are beatable in a one-game format. The Cowboys are the class of the NFC this year and are actually playing at a high level. They could beat the Pats in a one-and-done.
Or not.

I predict 50 suicides tonight due to this game.

The Patriots are the luckiest SOBs on earth. But they sure look beatable.

packsoldier on December 3, 2007 at 11:49 PM

I’m still loling about the ref announcing the penalty “throwing the referee’s flag in to the stands”.

Coming soon:
“Penalty: Defense. Player didn’t answer his girlfriend’s question ‘does this make me look fat?’ correctly.”

“Farted on an elevator”

“Pronounced it ’supposably’”

RightWinged on December 3, 2007 at 11:49 PM

Great game and still 10 minutes before Heroes starts. What a perfect TV evening!

Mallard T. Drake on December 3, 2007 at 11:49 PM

Fire that pathetic excuse for a coach. Now.

Nonfactor on December 3, 2007 at 11:48 PM

Well, maybe a quiet riot in the streets of Baltimore? A few overturned cars…nothing France-like.

SouthernGent on December 3, 2007 at 11:50 PM

It would be justified.

Nonfactor on December 3, 2007 at 11:51 PM

My wife had three Braxton hicks contractions due to that game. I’m going to sue whoever called that timeout on the Balt. sideline.

Weight of Glory on December 3, 2007 at 11:52 PM

I hate the Patsies with a passion. The refs gave them this game…they lost this game.

The luckiest best team beat the dumbest hardest hitting team. How extraordinary is that? Pats looked tired.

Griz on December 3, 2007 at 11:55 PM

very good game, to bad baltimore couldnt hold it together just a little longer.
that interception did them in.

trailortrash on December 3, 2007 at 11:58 PM

Lol.

Nonfactor on December 3, 2007 at 11:55 PM

Did you just “lol” at your own comment, with another comment?

RightWinged on December 3, 2007 at 11:58 PM

Sigh.

I just became a Ravens fan tonight.

And I now know for a fact that Satan exists … and he is holding a War-and-Peace length contract, signed jointly by Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

The Patriots are the luckiest SOBs on earth. But they sure look beatable.

packsoldier on December 3, 2007 at 11:49 PM

Agreed and agreed.

But sweet Mary Mother of God … Brady and Moss are like machines. Not since Staubach-Dorsett-Pearson have I seen such a finely tuned winning machine. They were cooler than pre-global warming ice in the last 3 minutes.

But they are indeed ridiculously lucky. See the above comment about their obvious deal with the Devil. They got a good bargain for their souls. Complete with super-models. Nice. They must have great agents.

But they can be beaten. In fact, they WERE beaten tonight. By a 4-7 team. Just like they WERE beaten last week, by the craptacular Eagles.

Of course, I just got done arguing that my Cowboys are champions because they find a way to win even when they’re beaten. So I can’t exactly begrudge the Patriots the same honor. That’s the mark of a champion.

Oh – and for the record, as a lifelong Cowboys fan, I want to bestow the highest of all honors on the New England Patriots.

I hate them. I really, truly, deeply hate them. With a passion.

I never understood why people felt that way about the Cowboys. Now I do, after watching this game. No wonder. It all makes sense now.

I hate them.

I hope its a Cowboys-Pats Super Bowl. I truly do. We’ll find out who is hated more.

Yes. Yes it does.

Add beer. Stir gently.

Observe proof that God is good.

And that He is a Cowboys fan.

Professor Blather on December 4, 2007 at 12:01 AM

Bwahaha!

You know how many games Brady won just like that? 21. TWENTY-ONE including 2 in Super Bowls. Luck? hardly!

GO BOYS!

Limerick on December 4, 2007 at 12:15 AM

The Baltimore coaching staff has once again grabbed defeat from the Jaws of Victory. All game long the defense kept Baltimore in the game, but when the chips where down the coaching staff wouldn’t trust them to make the play. Which it seems was the nail in their coffin as it completely destroyed them emotionally.

It’s been quite painful being a Ravens fan this year.

I’m stuck in a Hotel room in Leominster, Mass and Surrounded by PATS fans. It’s just as cold inside as it is outside right now.

Oh, the horror!!

Zaire67 on December 4, 2007 at 12:16 AM

No sweat. Pats had them all the way.

I see Massholes are already crowing like they didn’t almost lose. Typical.

clghitis on December 4, 2007 at 1:36 AM

Just got back from the game. Every Raven fan I talked to did not expect Baltimore to win prior to the game, they would have been happy with covering the spread.

Pats defense had a rough night.

F15Mech on December 4, 2007 at 1:59 AM

I won the pickems. 3 of us tied w/ 12

Tiebreaker 51

I am lucky; Pats were too.

27-24 pats. Final.

Is it just me or was the fix in during the last three minutes?

Be honest.

It’s just you.

Centerfire on December 4, 2007 at 5:02 AM

trailortrash on December 4, 2007 at 6:47 AM

The Pats had some difficulty, but in the end, their skill saw them through.

Luck had nothing to do with it. A football game isnt a lottery. The Ravens played well, the Pats played better. It wasnt the Pats running around saying they were gonna steam roll these last two teams.

I recall Brady saying that they were going to be challenging and they were.

Also I really loathe ESPN’s presentation. The audio is always like MUD and they put other video over the game. At one point they did a split screen showing Baseball highlights.

dogsoldier on December 4, 2007 at 7:11 AM

The Pats had some difficulty, but in the end, their skill saw them through.

You mean “The refs’ assist saw them through.” Glad I could help you there, dog.

crushliberalism on December 4, 2007 at 7:28 AM

He didn’t make the catch. The ball was rolling around in his arms.

Billick is an idiot for calling the timeout.

Sure they’re good, but this was a luck win, period. The game was over twice, and the Ravens kept letting them replay it. Reminded me of USA – Russia in the Olympics.

Boller’s interception — wha…?

Jaibones on December 4, 2007 at 7:28 AM

Is it just me or was the fix in during the last three minutes?

No question about it.

crushliberalism on December 4, 2007 at 7:29 AM

Is it just me or was the fix in during the last three minutes?

Absolutely!

Re: the PorkChop kerfuffle – they should have renamed him Applesauce.

Brat on December 4, 2007 at 8:54 AM

The Pats had some difficulty, but in the end, their skill saw them through.

Correct assessment! Good post.

My Patriots were in a tough venue, a hostile crowd setting, with high wind. The Ravens numerous mistake cost them this game despite home field advantage; Patriots responded with skill and professionalism despite weather. 12:0 baby!

Onward to Pittsburg! Patriots: Prepare for Glory!

IntheNet on December 4, 2007 at 8:55 AM

At least the refs reviewed the non-catch this time, as opposed to last week when they didn’t bother. The reviewed it and ignored the results anyway. The receiver did not have control of the ball.

Also, on the previous 4th down, the ref threw the flag sooo early when he saw the ball thrown into the end zone, just to make sure they would get a new set of downs.

They run more plays now in the NFL that don’t count than those that do. Timeouts granted after plays start, freezing a kicker afyer he kicks it. Challenging plays after a subsequent play had been run as in the Giants/Bears game.

Sad.

awake on December 4, 2007 at 8:57 AM

That game was f’ing tragic.

Blacklake on December 4, 2007 at 11:04 AM

The receiver did not have control of the ball.

Which is why Gaffney was in the process of carefully transferring it from right hand to left as he stepped out of bounds, I guess. Only in the fevered brain of a delusional Ravens homer is a receiver not in control of the ball when he’s adjusting his grip on it.

Regardless, even had the play been ruled a non-catch, the Patriots would have had first down at about the 18-inch line with 44 seconds remaining, due to your boy Scott coming completely unglued and taking the pair of unsportsmanlike penalties. Pretty safe bet that the Pats still would’ve walked away with seven.

Open the windows when you cook your meth, dude.
