“I’d have liked a little less gee-whiz, and a little more examination about whether a sexbot in every home, a Kama Sutra on legs that never tires, never says no, and never has needs of its own is what we really want.”

We have those already, they’re similar to a back massager.

Totally. . . why beat around the bush (you can take whatever joke out of that you like).
Make very good looking humanoid robots that are programmed to tell the truth, love the owner, and do all chores and work and earn a living. Why are we aiming low with AI?
ThackerAgency on December 2, 2007 at 10:08 PM
My robot wife better not have the ability to speak.
muyoso on December 2, 2007 at 10:10 PM
Wow, like this hasn’t been explored a thousand times in sci fi. Here is the real question, though. Would my wife consider it cheating if she caught me with a Lucy Liu fembot? How about the holo-brothels on Star Trek: Deep Space 9? Is it cheating if it is a hologram? Is a vibrator cheating?
redshirt on December 2, 2007 at 10:10 PM
Ever see Brainstorm?
They come up with a method of recording peoples’ actual experiences and others can play them back and experience the same thing. In the movie, iirc, one of the guys records a trist with a hot coworker. Another coworker (older guy who could never score a hot chick like that unless he had Bill Gates type money) gets the tape. They find him in his basement dead with the tape playing in a loop. (but a very happy look on his face)…
TheBigOldDog on December 2, 2007 at 10:13 PM
Especially? Doesn’t he mean exclusively? Are men really dying to come home to: ‘Honey, I’m home! Hello you b*stard, I’ve been laying here all day – you forgot recharge me!’ Yea, a companion!
I’ve always thought the predictions of the coming war between humans and robots was emotionally over-wrought rhetoric, but I can see now it wasn’t exaggerated. It’s going to be a fight for survival!
Spirit of 1776 on December 2, 2007 at 10:16 PM
Simulated sex has been around since the first female monkey wrangled the first extra banana from the first horny chimp and ate it in complete detachment as the act went on without her interest.
If this is what AI is aiming for, it’s called devolution.
Dismal, dehumanizing dreck.
A million dollar simulacrum of your hand.
Ooo, and maybe it’ll even mimick other things, too.
Like cyber-vomiting its disgust with our vacuous species.
Screwing a mirror with a hole drilled in it makes as much sense.
profitsbeard on December 2, 2007 at 10:16 PM
I’d like a liberal Fembot please. You know, since hippie chicks are easy and all. Surely they’d be better than a nice, straight-laced conservative fembot, right? Hehehe…
robblefarian on December 2, 2007 at 10:17 PM
What happens if your,booty bot,oh I dunno,
get’s a programming virus,and gets the
Lorena Bobbit syndrome,uumm,since it’s

Oh please. This is the biggest crock of garbage that women are always whining about about. Women *say* they want an emotional man who will talk and express his emotions and all this other nonsense, but when it gets down to a choice between the man they all say they want and the a-hole with the great body, nice car and big checking account, they pick the latter. And then come to the former when the latter treats them like crap and cry to the former wondering why the latter is that way.
I had to deal with this nonsense all through my 20s. Finally I told women that the guys they were with were a-holes and they should stop their b!tching about them and dump them. And what happened? They stopped their b!tching to me and went back to their a-holes to be treated the same exact way.
I don’t want to hear about women wanting a man who is “emotionally available”. I heard that for close to 10 years and watched them go and date just the opposite.
Michael in MI on December 2, 2007 at 10:22 PM
LOL! I can imagine the 911 call now…
TheBigOldDog on December 2, 2007 at 10:24 PM
“…and never has needs of its own is what we really want.”
Whattaya talkin’ about man? Speak for yourself.
Pleasin’ your woman and meeting (no, EXCEEDING) her needs is the best part of sex! When her eyes roll back in her head, her back arches … and she makes that sound … that’s when you’ve reached the Promised Land, my friend.
Tony737 on December 2, 2007 at 10:25 PM
Gigalo Joe will never be asked to promise not to…., er, um, , it’s a David Allen Coe reference to the 3 biggest lies in the World.
Where’s the accompanying humpbot video?
Kini on December 2, 2007 at 10:27 PM
Heh, I think you misread that. Emotionally available doesn’t mean your feelings, that means a vast receptacle for her to desposit hers :)
Ditto! Cheers to Mr., Mrs., and little 737.
Spirit of 1776 on December 2, 2007 at 10:31 PM
Oh I see you’ve already tried the model XV-SX7. Now that you’ve had her for a few weeks, perhaps you’d like to trade her in for a SX8.

Patricia in mirrored room: I’m afraid.
Gigolo Joe: Of me?
Patricia in mirrored room: Yes.
Gigolo Joe: That I will hurt you?
Patricia in mirrored room: Yes.
Gigolo Joe: I think… you’re afraid of letting go. I think you’re afraid of happiness. And this is starting to excite me. Are you afraid of seeing the stars… Patricia? I can show you how to reach them.
Patricia in mirrored room: I’m afraid of what you’ve got under there. May I see what it looks like first?
Gigolo Joe: Is this your first time… with something like me?
Patricia in mirrored room: I’ve never been with Mecha.
Gigolo Joe: That makes two of us.
Patricia in mirrored room: I’m afraid it will hurt.
Gigolo Joe: Patricia… once you’ve had a lover-robot you’ll never want a real man again. Are these the wounds of passion?
Patricia in mirrored room: Do you hear that music?
Gigolo Joe: You… are a goddess, Patricia. You wind me up inside. But you deserve so much better in your life. You deserve… me.
TheBigOldDog on December 2, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Men want a robot, in bed…? Reeaallly? I thought men complained if their woman was “robotic” in bed.

It can be the sexiest robot in the world. It still can’t beat the real thing.

Fembots are inevitable. And think through the possibilities of fiber optic speed images and sound in every home, freed from the confines of little “personal computers”…. We’re at just the first baby steps of the binary code revolution.
Halley on December 3, 2007 at 2:13 AM
I was too fearful that this was going to be one of those excruciating TMI (too much information) articles that the Times is so partial to so I didn’t read it.
thegreatbeast on December 3, 2007 at 2:29 AM
I thought it was a crock of garbage because it implies that you can program emotions using computer code to surpass that of the bio-chemical wonder that is the human male.
Quite frankly it’s insulting. One truly has to marvel at how stupid and politically correct these idiots are to assume the average American male doesn’t have any emotions, or at least not enough to where they can’t be surpassed by a chunk of code.
My prediction is that the first people to use such “advanced emotional technology” will be the creators of this idiocy, seeing as they’ve probably failed to catch a real person’s heart. I wonder why, considering they think emotions can be programmed.

“Come with me if you want to get busy.”
Anyone else ever get the “I wish I could find someone just like you” line while they were single, unattached, and interested?

Anyone else think this is a pointless and very repugnant post?

I think your post was pointless, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it very repugnant.

And it gives a whole new meaning to: “Why do Brides wear white? So the Dishwasher matches the Stove and Refrigerator.”

HA! Good one. Where would this thread be without sci-fi movies?
Tony737 on December 3, 2007 at 11:39 AM
