I see no reason why the identity of a questioner is important as long as the question is legitimate, posed fairly, and could not have been coordinated with one of the candidates towards whom it is directed. Also, the question is obviously of interest to Republicans, given the polarization I see on this issue and the comments it has generated in the political blogosphere. It may not be comfortable for Republicans, but it is likely that they’ll have to answer it again in the general election. Like I said, maybe CNN should have disclosed the political alignments of the questioner, but otherwise, I don’t see any problem with it.

You obviously didn’t watch the debate; not only did this person pose a video question, but CNN had him live in the audience, introduced him, and asked if his question had been answered. They did the same with someone who had asked an illegal immigration question. That person said something like “Yes, No and Maybe,” and sat down. This guy launched into a speech about gays in the military, with Cooper trying repeatedly to stop him, to no avail. This wasn’t just a matter of a YouTube question; this was someone imposing themselves, and their agenda, into the debate.
So, no, the question was not “posed fairly.”
As far the question being of interest to Republicans; I believe you have it reversed: it’s obviously of more interest to Democrats such as yourself, who see it as a way to make Republicans finally prove to the world that they are raging homophobes. There was more than one comment on HA last night from gay Republicans, and none of them considered the issue of gays in the military a major campaign issue.

I only wish one of our guys last night had had the Malkins to say that unlike the Democratic candidates, the GOP field is willing to go before any forum and answer any question from any voter regardless of their party affiliation.

They ought to ask Hill, Silky and Obama this very question at their next debate: “Given the GOP candidates willingness to debate at CNN, and take questions from any voter, why did you refuse to debate on FOX?”
