This is a good idea here, but we’ve got the wrong kind of people. We need people who will really process what they see on TV, internalize it, and be willing to think about how it relates to them and how it should change their actions and thoughts.

But on this world, we’ve got the other kind of people… who will think this refers to someone else, will ignore it, and won’t change a thing about themselves; if they even pay attention.

Sorry, but people aren’t the impressive attentive self-reflective and self-aware beings they’d need to be for this to work.

So, like most PSA’s this is a complete and utter waste of time money, and effort. Not because the intent was bad, but because people aren’t like we hope they could be.

I can’t help it, I laughed. It was freaking funny

I am not laughing at people who have grease accidents. It is horrible and people are stupid about grease. So stupid I would not have a fryer if I ran a restaurant. This has to do with our subconscious mind and the ability to run on automatic any task we do repetitively. Like driving a car and not remembering the details even though we performed them. Accidents happen when we go into autmatic to focus our mind on non-repetitive thoughts

This PSA will not rewire our compartmentalizing brains. However it is obviously aimed at illegals so it should have been in Spanish so the kiddies wouldn’t understand.

They could run it as a movie trailer to defuse the reality

Alot of folks are missing the point. Most accidents are caused by carelessness. Period. A little foresight, a little caution, and a little propper supervision and a LOT of those accidents wouldn’t have occurred. Laugh all ya’ll want, but if these commercials make just a few people think twice about what they’re doing and what’s going on around them thus keeping them from having an ‘accident’ and winding up dead or disfigured then they’ll have been worth it.

I knew a guy in high school who suffered this EXACT thing… he was carrying a vat of hot grease, slipped, and landed on his back with the grease covering an entire side of his body. He was in the hospital for a long time with 3rd degree burns over a large part of his body, and was scarred for life.

As a recovering burn patient, I cringed hard. But it happens, likely more than you would think. reminds me of “the Wendy’s shuffle” behind the counter. Don’t pick up your feet. Eveh!
Spend a few years around kitchen work and you see alot.

Apparently it’s a tradition in Canada to store grease in pools on the kitchen floor, for use in lean times.

In America our kitchens have these rubber mats with holes in them that allow the grease to go to the floor without people having to walk on it. On top of that, we’re required to wear nonslip shoes.

As someone who’s been in well over 1000 commercial kitchens ranging from industrial food processors, to fine dining, to McDonanlds’ to institutional/educational facilities, this is a PSA that is sorely needed. I’ve talked to too many “we know it’s there” types who insist that they “are being careful” when in reality, they’re just being lazy.

Unfortunately, I’ve also run into more than a couple of people who have unfortunately had that exact accident.

Yeah, it’s a shocking PSA, but the scenario is VERY real and kudos to them for creating this PSA.

Only part I can criticize is the scream of “there’s been an accident”, which is never what is yelled out at times like these. Continuing the realism through to the witnesses would have made the PSA stronger.

What is also unfortunate is the lack of anti-fatigue/safety mats in a majority of commercial kitchens in the U.S. For some this is simply a cost issue, for others, they’ve abandoned the mats because time cleaning them each evening or the hassle of having to take them up, mop and put them back down. A anti-fatigue/safety mat of the right type can dramatically increase productivity and also reduce injuries. (Sorry if that’s a bit preachy, but it’s the truth.)
