I am not willing to cede your first point yet, my biggest issue ( I might be going liberal here) is that in a perfect world, we (the USA) as we have always been are a force of good on the planet, and in doing what our country was put here to do--squish dictators and oppression, means fighting people who don't follow laws of civil men, ie, if man brings brass knuckles--you bring a bat, etc..we can't fight by the feel good rules if we are the only ones doing so...that is a sure way to loose. Moral relativism and situational ethics have created an entire generation that is hesitant to "pull the trigger" (in any sense) b/c they aren't quite convinced that America is truly exceptional...bad days ahead.

ColdBore76, two parts:

I am under the impression that water-boarding is forbidden. I am willing to stand corrected, but I heard (from McCain himself maybe?) that it goes by various names and is outlawed b/c it is controlled death, ie controlled drowning in the forms where the water is actually forced into the lungs. I assume that is true, so technically doing that would be a violation.

Of course, the WH argument is that the code is to be interpreted by all the nations and we don't interpret it that way - ie they say we follow the law...so maybe they don't ever allow water into the lungs, in the 3-5x we used it, I don't know. I do agree we shouldn't go into details of our techniques, though.

<blockquote>
All I got to say about the gay question is something from past experience. Back in the 60’s we had a gay guy in our unit. That wasn’t a term we used then, but…. He didn’t flaunt it, everybody and I mean everybody knew it and we didn’t care. He pulled his weight, he stood his watches and we just didn’t give a $hit. Most times we were all too tired or too scared to think about it. It just didn’t matter.

And that is exactly how it should be.

Bill Bennett [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

called a foul on the Hillary plant question. Anderson Cooper sounded shocked and appalled. Anderson Cooper has to assign someone to read The Corner.

My take: Huck played like a first tier candidate. Possibly my perception is skewed by how much commentary on him here and in MSM lately, but I don't think so. He's going to be a force from here on out. He is just too quotable and the press loves him. Both on display tonight.

Rudy did okay. The question about 'always 9.11' was good for him. Set himself up to expand to the Reagan years. Very bad answer on guns - he cleared up in the followup, but the initial answer was very poor. Great ad.

Mitt triangulated more than usual tonight, not impressed. Had the best single line though, with the 'I was wrong'. Very good answer. Also had the worst line with 'my son buys me expensive things' but during a cutaway, so maybe won't hurt. I would point out for all the don't say China people in the crowd, he put China in his ad.

McCain hurts himself. Even when I agree with him and on the points where he is technically correct (Geneva, etc) it's like he tries to piss people off (Pol Pot/Martinez?) ugh.

Fred, luke-warm. I don't want to sound too critical of him, because having failed my expectations I might be harder then on others. But I think the days of him being a factor are numbered.

Hunter steady as ever. Tanc solid - better job then last time.

Paul - I thought that conspiracy question was going to kill him with some one - either the conspiracy fans or the mainstream, but he jumped out of that like Luke out of the carbon freezer. I was surprised and a little impressed with that. Also drew the distinction b/t non-intervention and isolationist. I hate it when he uses the word empire, though, as he did in the ad.

Winners (no part order): Huck, Rudy, Hunter, Paul
No change: Fred, Mitt, Tanc (though he might be the big winner in the grand scheme seeing they are pledging taking his positions on i.imm)
Losers: McCain

I missed the first half, but fail to see how Romney could be seen as having done well here. Yes, he's a good speaker, but the content of his speech? Not so good. Waffle, dodge, waffle, repeat.
