Open thread: The snowman cometh; Update: Bloodsport

I sense a great disturbance in the ’sphere for this one. The polls are in flux, the tone has turned negative, and we’ve got a bona fide freak show format on tap. 8 p.m. on CNN: anything can happen. MM and Bryan are going to take liveblogging to the next level tonight, but if you’re not commenting over there then go on and sound off below. I might actually watch this one, so good are the odds that we’re in for bloodsport.

In theory everyone’s gunning for Mitt but the shock poll from earlier today and late word of Rick Warren sounding impressed with Huck complicates things. Rudy and Huckabee have made nice so far out of mutual interest in hurting Romney but Huck’s gaining on him in Florida, which is Giuliani’s must-have. He wants Mitt taken out in Iowa but not at the price of launching a Huckabee juggernaut. Will he attack Huck tonight or will he and Mitt continue their feud, leaving McCain to position himself as the statesman above the fray? As for Fred, the snowman’s already got one of his tough questions lined up for him. Here’s a better question: Dude?

While you wait, go see the latest dirty trick being played in Iowa. This one’s a twofer; Ace thinks Huckabee’s behind it, but only because he wants him to be. Take a look at this too. The Democrats are once again way ahead of the new media curve, although the GOP shouldn’t have much trouble replicating it. Finally, the Hammer’s down in Petersburg tonight interviewing whichever campaign spokesmen she can corral. Why Townhall would waste her creativity on running around to get the same soundbites the cable news nets will have later is beyond me, but she’s always worth watching. Here she is with Team Rudy and with Team Romney.

Finally, a valentine to Mitt from the Republican Majority for Choice. I didn’t even know they existed. Click the image to watch.

mitt-gopchoice1.jpg

Update: If you’re not watching, tune in now because they’re going at it hammer and tongs on immigration. Video later

Update: Here’s the bloodsport video between Mitt and Rudy.

Goldwater once said “you dont have to be straight you just have to shoot straight” Even this guy admitted that he didn’t admit his preference until he left the military meaning he knew it would be detrimental to morale.

All I got to say about the gay question is something from past experience. Back in the 60’s we had a gay guy in our unit. That wasn’t a term we used then, but…. He didn’t flaunt it, everybody and I mean everybody knew it and we didn’t care. He pulled his weight, he stood his watches and we just didn’t give a $hit. Most times we were all too tired or too scared to think about it. It just didn’t matter.

ColdBore76 on November 28, 2007 at 9:56 PM

It’s so obviuos what CNN is doing. A lot of standards Conservatives believe in are not all lovey/dovey and feel-good. But they do make sense and work. Liberal ideologies always sound better in soundbytes.

so CNN is gonna jam everything down the throats of these guys that they can to make them pander to every little group there is.

Oldnuke on November 28, 2007 at 10:01 PM

I am inclined for Huck over Mitt, just due to Huck’s ability to think on his feet over Mitt’s. Mitt could have taken the “if you want someone who has never admitted making a mistake” and turned it into a hillary slam. I also don’t think he has a mean bone in his body, needs a little more agression.

ColdBore76 on November 28, 2007 at 10:17 PM

Thought Mitt did the worst…an absolute waffle on the waterboarding issue and gays in the military.

Ron Paul continues to prove he’s nutty.

I can’t stand when Tancredo goes off on his one-note immigration position. Saying that, when he talked about other issues on the stage, he sounded entirely reasonable, and I found myself agreeing with him.

Didn’t like Duncan Hunter, the few times he got to speak.

Continue to prefer Rudy.

Fred, McCain and Huckabee did a good job.

Vizzini on November 28, 2007 at 10:20 PM

I thought Mitt LOOKED the most presidential. Thompson was better than I imagined he’d be. Rudy did good, too. Ron Paul is really scary…but only because I agree with some of his views!!

CNN is so obviously biased, though. They would never ask the democrat candidates questions (good, tough ones!) like this!

SouthernGent on November 28, 2007 at 10:20 PM

I thought Mitt’s non-disclosure of techniques answer was solid…I can’t believe McCain is just willy-nilly granting dirt-bag Tangos Geneva protection!?!? other than that I think he’d be a shoe-in.

What the hell? They asked a lady who she’d go with from their focus group, and she said Silky? This is such a stupid charade.

Bad Candy on November 28, 2007 at 10:42 PM

My take: Huck played like a first tier candidate. Possibly my perception is skewed by how much commentary on him here and in MSM lately, but I don’t think so. He’s going to be a force from here on out. He is just too quotable and the press loves him. Both on display tonight.

Rudy did okay. The question about ‘always 9.11′ was good for him. Set himself up to expand to the Reagan years. Very bad answer on guns – he cleared up in the followup, but the initial answer was very poor. Great ad.

Mitt triangulated more than usual tonight, not impressed. Had the best single line though, with the ‘I was wrong’. Very good answer. Also had the worst line with ‘my son buys me expensive things’ but during a cutaway, so maybe won’t hurt. I would point out for all the don’t say China people in the crowd, he put China in his ad.

McCain hurts himself. Even when I agree with him and on the points where he is technically correct (Geneva, etc) it’s like he tries to piss people off (Pol Pot/Martinez?) ugh.

Fred, luke-warm. I don’t want to sound too critical of him, because having failed my expectations I might be harder then on others. But I think the days of him being a factor are numbered.

Hunter steady as ever. Tanc solid – better job then last time.

Paul – I thought that conspiracy question was going to kill him with some one – either the conspiracy fans or the mainstream, but he jumped out of that like Luke out of the carbon freezer. I was surprised and a little impressed with that. Also drew the distinction b/t non-intervention and isolationist. I hate it when he uses the word empire, though, as he did in the ad.

Winners (no part order): Huck, Rudy, Hunter, Paul
No change: Fred, Mitt, Tanc (though he might be the big winner in the grand scheme seeing they are pledging taking his positions on i.imm)
Losers: McCain
