Burning Paris, night 3

posted at 9:23 am on November 28, 2007 by Bryan

It wasn’t as bad as night 2, thanks mostly to massive police presence and quick sentencing of rioters caught on the first two nights.

The French authorities deployed 1,000 police to a northern Paris suburb Tuesday to prevent a third night of youth riots amid signs that the violence could be spreading.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon visited the restive suburb of Villiers le Bel, where the death of two teenagers Sunday touched off two nights of violence that have left at least 120 police injured.

Nine people were detained in Villiers ahead of Fillon’s visit, police told AFP, and at least one shop was on fire later in the evening.

Earlier, a court jailed eight youths over the clashes with police Sunday and Monday. Four were handed prison sentences ranging from three to 10 months, while four others were detained pending judgement.

There was also Tuesday signs that the violence had spread outside the Paris region when about a dozen cars were set on fire in the southern city of Toulouse.

Calling the riots “unacceptable,” French President Nicholas Sarkozy is vowing to end them.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Wednesday that rioters who shot at police would be brought to justice as violence that rocked Paris suburbs appeared to ebb.

It was the first time Sarkozy, who had just returned from China, entered the fray since the rioting broke out Sunday night. The violence, which Sarkozy called “unacceptable,” eased Tuesday night after police were deployed in force and quickly rounded up youths lobbing Molotov cocktails and setting cars ablaze…

“We will find the shooters,” and they will “be brought to account before justice,” Sarkozy said after meeting with a wounded police captain hospitalized in Eaubonne north of Paris.

When the next round of riots pops up, maybe Sarkozy will have a few of these to deal with the TEPIDs.

…and as soon as Sarkozy makes a single constructive move to counter the jihad, they’ll say he’s insensitive to the needs of the cultural minority.

Kind of a lame response from Sarko given all the tough talk.

Valiant on November 28, 2007 at 9:32 AM

How exactly is the rioting easing if it’s spreading to other cities and the number of cars torched and buildings burned is still fairly high? Are they simply thanking their lucky stars that no police were killed last night thanks to bringing out more than a thousand cops to the scene of the first two-days’ worth of rioting?

Color me skeptical.

What’s this? France gets attacked and immediately responds with overwhelming force and tough consequences? And it works?

Mon Dieu! One might even think that this would be a successful strategy for dealing with terrorism.

Now that’s swift justice! I don’t know anything about France’s court system, but I like the thought of arresting a “youth” on Sunday/Monday, and sentencing him on Tuesday. Although maybe the sentence should have included deportation, vous pensez?

Shoot them bastards. I hate rioters that tear up other peoples stuff. They need to be taught the meaning of “respect”, even if you have to beat it into them.

They tried ramming burning cars into buildings…and with about 80 cops injured, I’d say there’s a lot of people who “give a f-k”.

* Police cars on fire
* Savages dancing on top of the police cars that were set on fire
* Shooting at police
* >80 officers hurt

And they’re still sending the regular police in?!?
They should deploy the French equivalent of the National Guard. If I’d be a cop in France and told to go in these hot zones I’d tell my supervisor to go F himself. It’s a miracle no cops have died yet.

AlexB on November 28, 2007 at 11:07 AM

So an entire neighborhood of burning cars is OK, but torch one building, and it’s different? Eh, I don’t get it.

As interior minister he called these protesters “scum,” for which he became the most hated person in France among these … scum. Now, as president, I suppose he is trying to show them he is not a “crazy Frenchman,” which is what he hopelessly needs to be to deal with them.

AlexB on November 28, 2007 at 11:53 AM

Well the french better do a better job of surrendering before they do start burning buildings and killing more french people. All they got to do is give them more welfare money and they’ll be happy for a while.

“about a dozen cars were set on fire in the southern city of Toulouse” – this seems surprisingly low for a riot. Where I used to work in London there was a burnt car every week or so, and that was the work of bored kids (literally, children) during peacetime. These riots seem more like inner-city Huddersfield of a Saturday night, or a typical night in Belfast during the troubles. I’m always skeptical whenever the media reports riots and burning cars etc, because it’s easy to take shots of one car from several different angles. Given the reports of rioters using hunting rifles it seems odd that we are not hearing of one or two dead policemen per day. Eventually this kind of urban disturbance will be a continual background drone that we will filter out.

at least 120 police injured

120 injured, vs. 17 arrested? So, the takeaway here for French police is if someone busts you in the face with a club, or shoots you; they won’t be punished for doing so.

Well, I can see a potential morale issue here. Doing a dangerous job sucks. Doing a dangerous job with no support, no backup, and leaders willing to sell you up the river… seems like it would suck worse.

I don’t see this one getting better before it gets worse.

Through the evening, they burned down the police station in Villiers-le-Bel, and set fire to four privately owned buildings

Timeframe undetermined…
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jeFc8AF_c6NJD6v25AZYeidCgg0AD8T6TBM00

The belief that police were at fault prompted rioters to burn down a library, preschool and several stores earlier this week.

Even if you’re calling this overlap from the previous article, a police station, a library, and preschool, and several stores at a minimum. is that enough?

… I happen to be in the profession …

Ok, and how many police stations have you let rioters burn out from under you?

Sorry, but either you missed the parts of the story where they’re burning down multiple buildings and deliberately shooting cops, or you’ve passed worldly and blasé and gone into apathetic.

Do you think they should just ignore the rioters shooting cops too? How many cops can they shoot before you get concerned?

Meh, I guess it’s only buckshot, right?

gekkobear on November 28, 2007 at 4:54 PM

Police, BY LAW, can’t work over 30 hours per week.
