Video flashback: Huckabee on letting illegal immigrants compete for state scholarships

Another old clip dug up by Arkansas Journal, which was responsible for the tax vid heard ’round the world. Huck’s supporters usually quibble with the phrasing when this issue comes up and insist that it was the children of illegal immigrants whom he wanted to make eligible for the scholarships. Read Lonewacko’s post, though, and follow the link to the text of the bill. The “children of illegals” formulation appears to be a crafty way of implying that the scholarships would be limited to students who were themselves citizens of the United States even though their parents were not. The bill even invokes the language in the preamble. But here’s how the operative section reads: “Any tuition rate that is granted to residents of Arkansas shall be granted on the same terms to all persons, regardless of immigration status, who have attended a secondary educational institution in Arkansas for at least three (3) years and who have either graduated from an Arkansas high school or received a general education diploma in the state.”

What are the points in favor of Huck at this point, exactly? One: He’s friends with Chuck Norris. Two: He’s got a sense of humor. Three: …?

Coincidentally, here’s Mitt’s new ad. Fred’s immigration spot was pure pap, which was a shame given that he’s the only candidate with a concrete plan. Mitt’s is 99.44% pap, the magic .56% coming in the recitation of his record on a few immigration-related issues. It’s just too hard to hit this topic in a 30-second clip, I think.

Say, things between Mitt and Rudy are getting a little hot, aren’t they? I can almost hear Will Ferrell’s voice: “Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast.”

Huck threw a trident!

The social liberal/fiscal conservative at the top of the ticket and the social conservative/fiscal liberal at the bottom. What’s not to hate?

He was porcine, but now he’s lean.

Balance.

Balance.

Rudy’s an agnostic, Huck’s a Christian. Rudy’s from the north, Huck’s from the south. Rudy’s thin-skinned and gives the impression of ruthelessness/Huck’s thin-skinned and gives the impression of ruthlessness. Wait…

Haha.

If either Giuliani or Romney get the nomination, I think either will almost have to go with a southern social conservative for the veep. Huckabee is doing some positioning here. He’s a relatively young guy who can afford to wait eight years for his shot.

And just when I get a break from work, too.

Timing is everything, I suppose.

Slublog on November 26, 2007 at 2:56 PM

Well, Huck is one of those that tried the “bigots” approach to anyone not agreeing with his immigration plan, so he can take a hike as far as I am concerned:

From the Arkansas News (past issue)- Gov. Mike Huckabee Thursday denounced a bill by Sen. Jim Holt that would deny state benefits to illegal immigrants as un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life.

Clark1 on November 26, 2007 at 2:59 PM

Huckabee on illegal “immigration” from his web site

What he now has on his web site is 180 degrees off, 3200 mils out, diametrically opposed to his past actions and pronouncements on the subject of illegal “immigration”.
Unless someone as hijacked his web site and kept it hijacked for some time now, the man is a certifiable unadulterated liar and should be called on it by the media and the other candidates 24×7.

Ladies and Gentlemen, why isn’t there a link or a post to the most important story of our time? On Drudge right now? We need to discuss Pat Buchanan’s new book and what he predicts/proclaims. It is scary as hell.

oh yeah and “Dont tase me bro”!!!!

Buchanan’s an anti-semite crank. For every one thing he gets right, there’s a laundry list of crap he gets wrong, or just sounds crazy on.

Bad Candy on November 26, 2007 at 3:13 PM

Go look at the article and snippits. It is directly relevant to immigration illegal and legal and the ramifications that would come about if hes correct on ANY of the things he says are frightening and almost unimaginable!! here for teh lazy among us http://www.drudgereport.com/flash9pb.htm

At least Hillary was a “Goldwater Girl” in her youth.
Maybe she will get a brain growth and revert.
At least there would be some hope with her.

MB4 on November 26, 2007 at 3:15 PM

Huckabee launched too soon. He would have been better served to lay low and avoid the conservative radar.

I’m slightly amused that Walker endorsed Huckabee over McCain. What would Lee Atwater do?

gabriel sutherland on November 26, 2007 at 3:16 PM

Fred Thompson comes out with an outstanding Illegal Immigration bill, and conservatives want to vote for Romney & Hucklebee? Hell has FROZEN OVER!

I read it. He makes some good points, but unfortunately has a tendency to surround those points with alarmist rhetoric and a whiff of anti-semitism.

Buchanan worked for Reagan. You would think Reagan’s optimistic conservatism would have rubbed off a little.

Slublog on November 26, 2007 at 3:21 PM

He also worked for Nixon That is where the toxicity and negativity comes into play

Slublog on November 26, 2007 at 3:21 PM

Churchill’s rhetoric was alarmist also, was he wrong?

Joey1974 on November 26, 2007 at 3:27 PM

Buchanan is Reagan without the Austrian Economists on domestic policy and the defense hawks on foreign policy. This basically leaves very little behind that the American People find favorable.

Perhaps if Buchanan were 30 years old with the same message he might do better.

gabriel sutherland on November 26, 2007 at 3:28 PM

I would not stay home, I would vote for Hillary!

MB4 on November 26, 2007 at 3:03 PM

You’ve made similar comments before. Hillary’s socialist vision for America, her abnormal psychological make-up, and the poisonous effect of her husband on American politics, cast them beyond the pale. Your attempts to portray her as preferable to Rudy or Huckabee on the issues betray your true beliefs.

A fact: After Rudy’s term as mayor, NY was much better than the way he found it. That will not be the case with Hillary.

JiangxiDad on November 26, 2007 at 3:28 PM

Churchill’s rhetoric was alarmist also, was he wrong?

You’re comparing Buchanan to Churchill? Really?

Good heavens.

So vote for Duncan Hunter or Tom Tancredo.

dogsoldier on November 26, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Pat Buchanan and Churchill both Nationalist, both cranky, both old, both minimalized by the “intellectual elites”, both deliver/delivered a message no one wanted to hear, both riddiculed, one was vindicated… soon it will be Pat’s turn, and can we get over the ignorant anti semetic comments he made like 30 years ago please.

Joey1974 on November 26, 2007 at 3:35 PM

dogsoldier on November 26, 2007 at 3:34 PM

TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!!

Joey1974 on November 26, 2007 at 3:36 PM

Here’s how the circle is squared: Children are minors and thus the law does not treat them the same. If a parents drags their 5-year-old to America, it’s not like the 5-year-old can or should do much about it. It’s a bit unfair to describe such children as “illegal immigrants.” Flash-forward to college, and someone who didn’t choose to come to America is denied the opportunities legal residents have. That sounds unfair to many Americans, even those who would love to deport that kid’s parents. Ignoring the larger immigration issue, it also seems unfair to deny the very type of American we’d like to have, someone smart and motivated who is going to college, assistance in doing so. Of course, to have zero tolerance on illegal immigration means that we’d need to deport the kid (and parents) to a society in which his or her talents will be wasted, but since when is “zero tolerance” a good policy in education?

calbear on November 26, 2007 at 3:41 PM

So, instead of simply playing an “out” political card, Huckabee dove headfirst, blind, into the cesspool known as the death of Republican candidates, supporting benefits for illegal aliens.

On judgment alone, this should eliminate Huckabee. *gasp* What other head first, eyes closed, dives does he have in his rucksack?

gabriel sutherland on November 26, 2007 at 3:57 PM

Huckabee doesn’t have anything going for him other than those two things Allah outlined above. It would be nice if he’d exit the race and give his campaign money to Hunter…

Yikes, I agree with almost everything Buchanan says. Except for the devalued dollar- that just makes us more competitive with other countries.

Spirit of 1776 on November 26, 2007 at 4:06 PM

I used to like Huck, but any incentive to illegal immigration is foolish. Sorry Huck, you Pi$$ed in your mess kit on that one.

YOUR OUT !!!

saiga on November 26, 2007 at 4:06 PM

calbear on November 26, 2007 at 3:41 PM

YES

If we are serious about illegal immigration, it will take “tough love” to shut off the magnets that bring them here. Having the US taxpayers pay for your kid’s education because you don’t represents an incentive that must be eliminated.

saiga on November 26, 2007 at 4:12 PM

As Jonah wrote last week, Huckabee’s philosophy can be described as compassionate conservatism on steroids. If you liked Bush’s conservatism, then you’ll love Huckabee’s, especially with the bonus of his nanny-statism thrown in.

Aside from Paul, I can’t think of a less desirable candidate in the Republican field, and that includes McVain who I despise.

No. Freakin’. Thanks.

EricPWJohnson on November 26, 2007 at 4:33 PM

I love how some of you try to marginalize supporters of Fred Thompson by trying to compare them to Ron Paul and calling us “Freadheads”. That’s original!

The only record that Fred Thompson takes a hit on is his days as an attorney working for his employer and for not supporting the life amendment. First off, the life amendment (if you area true federalist like our fore fathers) would be unconstitutional. Fred is right… the states need to decide! Just like what we talk about when it comes to the abortion laws now! The right to an abortion whether you agree with it or not should be decided by the states, not the federal government!

Fred Thompson is the closes thing that we can say is conservative. He doesn’t believe in abortion. He believes in state rights, and he is for strong immigration policies. He pretty much stands for most of everything we conservatives agree upon. And at the same time, he doesn’t have a crazy foreign policy stance as Ron Paul.

That’s one person’s opinion. Does anyone have opinion poll data on this? I mean, it depends how the question is asked, but “We should have a zero-tolerance approach” won’t quite get the same numbers as “We should enforce migration laws better.”

why do i feel like you’re always drunk?
