Hillary prays for “empowerment” in Iowa
posted at 7:32 pm on November 26, 2007 by Allahpundit
Unless I missed something, the whole angle here is that she used a shopworn PC feminist buzzword in a petition to the Almighty. Except that it wasn’t she who used it, it was part of the group prayer, and it wasn’t being used in a feminist sense. Which means there’s not much of an angle.
Although it is useful as a reminder that it’s not just Christian conservatives who occasionally lapse into policy talk from the pulpit.
Rev. Jill Flyr, associate pastor, read from the book of John and gave a sermon about the importance of supporting those who can’t help themselves. Clinton nodded when the pastor read off some statistics, such as 35 percent of Iowa children are part of low income families, and added 45,000 children in Iowa are without health care.
“We should be outraged by these numbers,” Flyr said, encouraging the congregation to work toward changing public policy to fund “high quality preschool” for disadvantaged children. She said health care and education should not just be for children from “well-to-do” families.
Pass HillaryCare. Jesus would want you to.
I suppose the other angle is the curious concept of Christians praying for empowerment. To a casual observer (i.e. me) it seems hard to square that with the idea of the meek inheriting the earth, but then “empowerment” can mean many things. In fact, this British Methodist church is handing it out like cupcakes at a birthday party. Exit question: What’s so funny ’bout peace, love, understanding, and “empowerment” in church?
Update: I’m guessing Jesus wants you to support Chris Dodd too.

That’s my favorite part of the Bible, where Jesus whines to the Disciples about the leprosy statistics under Herod.
Oh wait, he ministered to them himself. In other words, be your brother’s keeper, don’t pay the government to do it for you.

Sounds like some pretty desperate measures…
Sort of like praying in a group as the ship sinks.

I think you already touched on it, AP. It really depends how one defines empowerment. If your are using it as a general expression, with as little connotation as possible, then there is really nothing anti-Biblical about it. After all, prior to Christ’s ascension, He told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. There the word is used somewhat similar to the ideas of boldness, courage, knowledge to defend the faith and spread the Gospel, among others. If the word is used in a Liberation Philosophy sense, then there would be a problem, not a huge one mind you, but a little one none the less. Personally, what she said isn’t that big of a deal for me.
“Personally”…”for me”…dang redundancy!

Hillary makes a campaign stop and parks herself in a church to listen to Reverend Jill plead for government funded healthcare.

Peace, love, understanding in church goes hand in hand
with the good book,unless:
Your Bill Clinton,an easter of all days in church, later we find he got serviced that particular day with you know who.
or:
Your Bill Clinton, and you have sex addiction, and you
have three ministers following you around, never did
hear anymore about that.
Republican’s go to church,Liberals go to church to use
the church for their own purposes, some Liberal’s, not all.

“high quality government care” is an oxymoron.

Couldn’t it be said that Lucifer was really just feeling his own empowerment when he sought to take Gods thrown. I guess God was just being a fascist when he cast him out.

The picture of Hillary for this thread just reminded me of an infamous scene from Animal House: that horse’s expression when Kent Dorfman? (Flounder) shot that pistol in the air and gave it a heart attack in the dean’s office.

“We should be outraged by these numbers,”
I am outraged by those number of parents that produce these children without the means to support them. I am not responsible for their care !

Y’know, Allah, I’m not surprised at your pop-cult dexterity with the allusion, especially with your “Oh, the humanity” line on the Ron Paul blimp. But I always figured you as more of a Ramones kinda guy, and they hated all that hippie peace-and-love crap. Especially Johnny.
So what’s up with this Atheists For Social Justice thing?

Note the absence of any serious, relevant, “exegesis” of the actual text of Scripture from the Book of John.
Pastor Jill was more interested in bringing in left-wing political ideas that are foreign to the meaning and reading of the actual sermon material. Pastor Jill’s concern was to “import left-wing ideas” into the sermon, instead of being a faithful expositor and teacher of the Word of God.
She did not preach a sermon from the text of Scripture. Rather, she pushed left-wing political ideas into the text in order to arrive fallaciously at her left-wing conclusions.
The absence of expository, Bible-based preaching and teaching in American churches is a very serious problem today.
When pastors stray away from the actual text of Scripture, they end up communicating error and confusion to the audience.

By “importing ideas” into a sermon, and straying far away from the actual text of Scripture, pastors are by-passing and ignoring the Word of God and communicating error and confusion to the audience. The apostle James warns that teachers will be judged more strictly.

Anyone who is unfamiliar with the liberal pc-speak staple of “empowerment” hasn’t been to a mainstream Protestant church in a while. This kind of tripe is a given in the Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, UCC (especially) churches.
Right up Hillary’s alley. Which probably (at least partially) explains why membership and attendance is down dramatically in every on of those denominations.
