[...] Today’s public health message Posted on November 26, 2007 by Bookworm I really try not to be neurotic about germs. I understand that, especially with kids, a few bacteria here and there are good for their immune systems. Indeed, when my kids were little, I read somewhere that kids who grow up in houses where Mom is too aggressive with the antibacterial sprays actually have compromised immune systems. I do have a few anti-germ rules, though: wash your hands when you come home; use anti-bacterial gel after handling shopping carts or riding public transportation; and run a bleach load once a week (’cause you don’t really want to know what kind of gross bacteria grow in your washing machine). I now have a new item to add to the list: wash your hotel drinking glass really, really well.

I don’t ever recall seeing housekeeping with a tray of fresh glasses on thier cart.

That's what I was thinking. I dont' recall ever seeing a tray of clean glasses, or a bunch of dirty ones on the way out.

On the other hand, its thought one of the reasons so many kids have allergies is because their immune systems don't get enough "stimulation" during their early years because we raise them in near sterile environments. The only way to keep your immune system healthy is to keep working it out!

Hey, these are good standards if you come living in a place with a dirt floor!

portlandbob on November 25, 2007 at 9:04 PM

VERY true.

Plus, since most kitchen workers in the US are illegal aliens, kinda makes you think twice about restaurant food, doesn't it?

I've lived in Mexico, and there are damn good reasons - which I guarantee you don't want to know about - that visitors get the dreaded Montezuma's revenge. Contrary to popular Cancun lore, it's not just from drinking the water. It's from who handles your food.

And don't even get me started on restaurant workers never washing their hands after using the toilet.

The single use plastic cups are the best choice-break a glass made of glass and you could cut yourself and you have no idea if the hotel has a Blood Borne Pathogen Plan.

The disinfectant warning is another reason employees must be able to read and understand English.

Also, do not forget to pack the 'Blacklight' (even though TSA may take it away because they do not know what it is) to check the sheets and other upholstery-where you lay or sit may have been used for other activities other than sleeping and sitting.

Finally, what do you do when what you thought was a new pattern in the carpet is actually a chalk outline?

What a silly, fallacious premise.

So they wipe down a glass in a room that you rent and will be staying in for another night... that doesn't mean that they do that after you check out and another guest is coming in.

I thought that was stupid so I quit watching. Was there something that actually, logically makes sense as something to be icked about?

Get a life, guys. As George Carlin said, "that's what you have an immune system for - to kill germs." I have stayed at over 200 different hotels in the US and Asia, and I have never been sick afterwards. Of course, my alcohol consumption could have something to do with it. After all, germs in glasses don't live long when you drown them in whiskey. ;)

The first thing I do when I check into a hotel room is remove the comforter/bed spread and toss it in the corner. If you stay more than 1 night, remove it every day. Don't lie down on it, whatever you do.

Hey, these are good standards if you come living in a place with a dirt floor!

I will now become a guest that requests dishwasher glasses at check in.

Imagine running an ultraviolet on the bedspread. NEVER use it. Check in and pull it off.

I am outraged!!

While I agree that the way they were "cleaning" is disgusting, how many times have we heard about disease outbreaks coming from Embasy Suites, or Hilton (not to be confused with Paris Hilton)? I don't see myself lighting my hair on fire, and self flaggelating over this. Ya, the hotels could use some straitening out.

As far as sniffing towels go, you obviously aren't a parent.

Travel kit:
Lysol (clean toilet seat even if it has band on it!)
My own pillow
Long pj's
My own water bottle
Slippers or flip-flops

I'm not the world's best housekeeper — in fact, may be the worst — but it's MY DIRT!!!

This is nothing compared to what they'd find if they'd put any hotel's (including the 5* ones) carpet under the microscope.

I travel much and am not squeamish, but fairly careful. Also, I spend much time working in hospitals.

First, humans are way more resistent to all kinds of 'dirt', than we react to a video like this.

Second, with all this, the U.S.A. is still a cleanliness heaven, compared to all of the rest of the world, with the exception of Japan and Australia. I know, you wish to counter, but I've really compared and contrasted for many years. Just a few items: toilet seat covers, toilet care, type of toilets, water availability, type of water, toilet paper availability, access to toilets, type of toilets, rest areas and all services which come with them, etc., etc.

Still, a few things I do, or don't do, as a precaution:

- no use of glasses in the rooms, of any kind
- no drinking of water supplied by the hotel, even if it's bottled. It could be rebottled. Buy/bring your own, from a sealed source
- wear socks and spread towels on the bathroom floor. The video hasn't analyzed the bathroom floors - heh, put them under the microscope and see

Also, in restaurants and hotels, be polite. You'd be surprised what can happen to you out of laziness and especially out of envy and spite.

Just be careful all around and you'll be fine. No need to live, and die, like Howard Hughes, really. Also, we don't have much control over any of this, no matter what the actions are. There are simply never going to be enough inspectors to take care of this, with other priorities like food inspections, for example.

Sort of like when you leave the public restroom and grab the same door handle with your freshly washed hands that 500 other people that didn't wash their hands just grabbed.

We're livin' on the edge people.
