Video: Mary Katharine Ham wonders, should tests be written in Spanish?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Between “gimme” questions like these and the weekly “All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Watching ‘Policing the Net’” segment on O’Reilly, the only place left to see the Hammer really strut her stuff is on Red Eye. Someday I’m going to talk the boss into going on. Someday…
Note to MKH for future reference: During red meat bits like this, angrily pounding the nearest surface or even flipping the table in a fit of righteous pique is perfectly appropriate.

Su palabra necesita un accento: Sí.
Americans are notoriously horrible spellers and grammarians in English. Why confuse them with two languages?

What language was the law suit filed in????
Mojack420 on November 23, 2007 at 8:06 PM
Spanish tests should probably be in Spanish although I would have scored a lot higher if they had given them in English. Of course I favor English as our only official language and I can say that knowing several others pretty well.

Note on flipping tables; flip with your knees, not with your back (unless you have Popeye forearms like me, in which case a flick of a wrist is sufficient).
I’m taking bets on who is on Red Eye first – AP or the boss.

For a demonstration of proper table flipping technique, please see this.

That’s what I’m talking about. Notice how Jim (Chris) Everett used his knees to power the table over.
Of course, I don’t recommend taking the actions that he took after flipping the table.

Exit question: Exactly how stupid are Californians?

I posted this once befor but will do it again because it so directly applies.
My Mother, born 1914, spoke only norwegian and swedish when she started school in far northen Minnesota. In school she was only allowed to speak and write english. By the 6th grade she won a northern Minnesota spelling bee.
The point is: she did not allow herself to be handicapped by a simple langauge barrier, she beat it quickly.

Even tho english is the official language,it will be a slippery slope and a new front for Liberals to influence
favour to spanish speaking voters, and a TON of money.
If this keeps getting traction, schools are going to change
curiculem, books, videos, signs, probably an interpreter on site.(WHILE ALL COMMUNICATION TRAFFIC FROM ECHLON SITS
WAITING FOR ARABIC TRANSLATERS)
Pushing Spanish to be the official language along side with
English,means from the word go,small business,all business’s
sports arena’s,the whole 9 yards,–what’s written in English
will all so have to be in Spanish or face fines and lawsiuts.
This is nothing more than a sinister plan by the Liberal’s
to turn America into a multicultraism, and go after Spanish
voters lock, stock, and barrel, and if this see’s the light of day, do you think Cair,or Muslim’s are going to take a
back seat to this!

If I take a spanish class in a california school or maybe a french class; can I expect that test to be in english? They are, after all, not my native language.
lorien1973 on November 23, 2007 at 11:35 PM
Was MKH wondering in Spanish?
infidel4life on November 23, 2007 at 11:45 PM
The dollar speaks English. End of story. Anyone that wants to say other wise is an idiot or has a political agenda. There is really not a lot else to say about this subject…

Nah, I’ll see your comment and raise you…
English is actually a superior language to Spanish, and most others. Ask any non-P.C. sociolinguist… language is thought, and vice versa, and English is an upgrade for your brain, an advanced operating system.
P.S. In English, they have more than 150 words to describe how lovely MKH is…

AP should be the designated HA Redeye trailblazer.
A bit of A/V digital processing, and he can keep his anonymity.
Bryan next.
The Boss as clean up hitter.
Triple threat.

This is a subject that is causing problems all over the country for native Americans (Americans through birthright) right now, and is not being addressed. We are seeing our native population being forced out of their homes and careers by this, as the requirement to speak Spanish to maintain employment becomes more widespread.
I’m still not sure how it can be rationalized to put the needs of an immigrant population ahead of the native population? You would think if you are an American and speak the language, you should be employable anywhere in the Union – the Union you have paid taxes into and in support of.

Interesting. My Great-Grandmother’s family (my paternal mother’s mother) came to America in the 1880s from Sweden.
After they arrived, my Great-Grandmother’s parents said to the children that since they have left Sweden to make their new home in America that they would begin speaking and writing in English only. And that was it. My grandmother remembers her grandparents speaking to each other in Swedish but not to her mother or the other grandchildren.
All of this controversy is about attitude. The attitudes of those who emigrated before and the attitudes of some who come to America now.
If you’re choosing to live in a country not of your birth, and that country’s government has allowed you the opportunity to do so, learn their language, customs, culture, and history –- and respect it.

And, right now, the Euro speaks cha-ching!

If Spanish is demanded to be taught now, who wants to bet that CAIR will next ask for An Arabic language like Farsi to be taught?

Here in Rochester, there was a proposal to “normalize” Ebonics by incorporating the “Black English Vernacular” into the classroom.
http://www.13wham.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=8463c5bc-d926-401e-b590-143ada8dbac9
All in the name of diversity (or is it laziness on the part of the teachers and students?) The proposal was widely criticized and ultimately abandoned. But I have no doubt that it still goes on, even though they could not get support to make it “policy”.
kooly on November 24, 2007 at 11:49 AM
Let’s write the questions in Spanish and the answers in English. That is true equality and diversity.
MSGTAS on November 24, 2007 at 12:45 PM
