“Fire in the belly” isn’t a criticism of southern ways or folksy mannerisms– it means what’s your internal philosophy that led you to your opinions, how does your compass work? It’s not enough to be President to simply be on the “right” side of conservative issues. A lot of people are. That’s OK for Rudy or Mitt. People don’t really trust that deep down those two are philosophical Conservatives, so they just hope that they can be pushed into the right positions in return for the job. Fred on the other hand claims to be the real deal. I don’t think he has sufficiently demonstrated how that came to be, how it informs all of his thinking, or how it reflects on the other major issues of the day. He must deliver more, or he will be doubted.

I think you are mistaking the horse race aspect of the campaign with having core principles which guide a candidate. Mitt and Rudy have the horse race quality in spades. A lot of us conservatives thought Fred would be running a lot more vigorous campaign than he has. We are disappointed but not willing to give up on him.

One way to tell if someone is the real deal is to look at the positions they have held in their public life.

I think he actually still has a chance if he can finish 3rd in Iowa and win in South Carolina. There are 6 southern states (7 if you include FL on 1/29) holding their primaries on 2/5. He is leading in 3 of them and a close second in the other 3.

If he can survive Super Tuesday, anything can happen.

Oh and were not all liberals or douchebag truthers.

I see nothing wrong with his manerisms or ambition. He is spot on with his conservative compass.

Go ahead and vote for Rudy or Mitt or Huck, and watch as they join up with Murdock, the WSJ, and Kennedy to pass the amnesty bill of 2009. Will you complain that you were tricked when that happens?

I don’t see him making that comparison. But I voted for Reagan twice and saw his debates on T.V. He was not “bigger than life” then as he is now. He was a candidate trying to win the presidency and my boss did nothing but ridicule him. I see that happening to Fred now as it did to Pres. Reagan. People are judging him by physical characteristics and age instead of the issues.

Elections aren’t about issues anymore… now we choose our presidents based on a year-long version of an O’Reilly Factor body language segment. Once we elect the nanny-stater with the best hair and we realize that’s what we’re stuck with for at least the next 4 years, then maybe it will be about issues again for a while… until the next election rolls around, then we get right back to focusing on all the stupid superficial crap that got us into this mess in the first place.

He may not be making the comparison, but voters are. That is something he will have to deal with.

I also voted for Reagan twice. He struck me as 10X the candidate as Fred, however I was much younger and much more impressionable. Good luck to Fred, though. I will vote for him if he becomes the candidate.

Oddly, I was accused of being anti-Rudy on Friday. And earlier last week I was accused of hating Mormons because I criticized Mitt. It’s so hard keeping track of which candidate I’m “out to get.”
