Save the planet: Have an abortion

Via Weasel Zippers, a new entry in the pantheon of great abortion rationales. The greatest gift you can give Gaia is the gift of extinction:
At the age of 27 this young woman at the height of her reproductive years was sterilised to “protect the planet”…
“Having children is selfish. It’s all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet,” says Toni, 35.
“Every person who is born uses more food, more water, more land, more fossil fuels, more trees and produces more rubbish, more pollution, more greenhouse gases, and adds to the problem of over-population.”
She met her husband, who’s also a vegan, at an animal rights demonstration, which I guess also makes this an entry in the pantheon of cartoonish cultural stereotypes. Not an isolated example, either:
Most young girls dream of marriage and babies. But Sarah dreamed of helping the environment - and as she agonised over the perils of climate change, the loss of animal species and destruction of wilderness, she came to the extraordinary decision never to have a child.
“I realised then that a baby would pollute the planet - and that never having a child was the most environmentally friendly thing I could do.”…
Mark adds: “Sarah and I live as green a life a possible. We don’t have a car, cycle everywhere instead, and we never fly.
“We recycle, use low-energy light bulbs and eat only organic, locally produced food.
“In short, we do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint. But all this would be undone if we had a child.”
All we need now is some evidence that environmental fanaticism is genetically influenced and we can break out the party favors. Exit question: Isn’t there an even higher level of social consciousness than saving the planet? My friends, there is.

If those knuckleheads were truly that concerned about their carbon footprint, they’d off themselves and take themselves out of the equation.

I do think that we have enough people right now…
Problem is that its a genetic fact that stupid people are breeing faster than smart people…
the meek won’t inherit the earth… the stupid will…
but the again… it sounds like this couple are helping Darwin out a bit by not propogating a genetic line which is not fit to survive….
Wow… guess in my Libertarian view? Its their choice…

Did you see the movie Idiocracy?
Also, thank goodness these people aren’t reproducing.
thebrokenchair on November 23, 2007 at 10:14 AM
I firmly support the argument that abortion is a positively wonderful technology because otherwise we produce more people than is good for the environment. I know that many people here have made a fetish out of hating environmentalism, but that position is no more sane than suggesting that we should just take the troops out of Iraq with no regard to the consequences.
Environmental issues have had real world consequences. Part of the fall of Rome was due to failing grain harvest due to bad environmental practices–not to mention lack of an EPA to forbid lead plumbing. (EPA remark is meant for humor value.) I just read a good book called Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations by David R. Montgomery that talks about our soil issue–which like the issue of biodiversity is much more important global warming.

That’s what they are doing in a way, lessening the future generation of “progressive” libtards.

If you think you shouldn’t have kids:
you shouldn’t have kids.
If you think of kids as a “carbon footprint”:
you should self-sterilize.
Things in the Thrid World are:
blame the evil First World for everything and have tons of kids.
So, these vegan-icides have bought into the old “noble savage” myth perfectly.
And will vanish with their naivete.

Pointing out bad science is a fetish? And don’t confuse environmentalism with conservationism. I’m all for conservation. I’m totally against bad science.
Hey off topic, Michelle is on the phone with FNC right now!

20 years ago, there were 4 billion people on this planet. now, there are 6 billion.
i say we take a page from A Modest Proposal, apply modern terms to it, and thin out the poor nations, like Africa and India, and Mexico.
let’s see how long before the claims of “inequality” and “racism” begin to surface.
abortions are wrong, but as a Catholic, i would be shouted down as not caring for the erf (that’s right, erf), but say what i stated above, and watch all hell break loose.

These types can perform the ultimate carbon footprint reducing exercise: just kill themselves.
AlexB on November 23, 2007 at 10:26 AM
Wait until they realize their parents never should have had them. ::pop::
PatrickS on November 23, 2007 at 10:27 AM
That’s exactly what I think whenever I read this “rationale” about not having babies to save the planet. Just think how much carbon emmissions they could save if every environut killed themselves. All their carbon footprints would be zero. Can’t do better than that.
Michael in MI on November 23, 2007 at 10:29 AM
By the way, we always hear this nonsense about “reducing your carbon footprint” and that if we don’t, we have X years to survive before it is too late.
Okay, if that is the case, then there must be some kind of number out there for the “ideal carbon footprint” right? Does anyone even know what this is? This is all supposed to be scientific, so there should be some numbers out there which calculate everyone’s carbon footprint in the entire world, how they affect the climate, and by how much we need to reduce them in order to be “ideal”. But we never get these numbers. We simply get told to drive Priuses and use different lightbulbs.
Yes, I know this is all a fraud and we’re never going to get those numbers, because they don’t exist. But why are these questions never posed to Al Goracle and his little minions? Why doesn’t anyone ever ask how they can measure their carbon footprint so they can see if they need to reduce it or if they are okay?
Yes, yes, I know. The people following this nut are doing so based on emotion rather than logic.
Michael in MI on November 23, 2007 at 10:36 AM

dogsoldier on November 23, 2007 at 10:40 AM
The choice to not have children is a personal one, and can be made for whatever reason. That said, nations like China add 7 million people to the planet every year. I’d be curious to know how many of them are being taught good environmental practices. If the free nations of the world, who do care about the environment and have the resources to do something about it, cease to be, then the world is likely to end up worse off because of it.
Defense Guy on November 23, 2007 at 10:41 AM
I was just wondering how they rationaled their being born and consuming scarce resources as well…..
EricPWJohnson on November 23, 2007 at 10:42 AM
Yeah, because that strategy worked out so well for the Shakers!
On a more serious note, we’ve already seen at least one highly crazy environmentalist advocate mass sterilization by means of engineered viruses. At the rate they’re going, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the day when at least a few hard-core envirowackies go the way of Eric Rudolph, in order to halt the production of greenhouse gases by their victims.
Well-Armed Lamb on November 23, 2007 at 10:46 AM
What an idiot. This is one reason why Britain is changing drastically. The English choose not to procreate while at the same time not controlling immigration. The end result is a massive demographic change in the next couple of generations.
You cannot call Britain great anymore. Perhaps Islamabrit is more fitting.

Defense Guy on November 23, 2007 at 10:41 AM
China also has a mandatory 1-child limit too right? After that couples must have abortions?
I would be interested to know if Toni and her husband believe the government should enforce the same thing here in America (and other Western nations) to limit the population of the planet in order to save it.
Forced sterilizations after a couple has one child? Or maybe government funded abortions on people’s health plans so people who have promiscuous sex can be free to continue to do so without bringing more carbon emitting children into the world?
Michael in MI on November 23, 2007 at 10:48 AM
Good. It also guarantees that there won’t be more of them…
Now, they don’t have to use a piece of LATEX stolen by force from rubber trees.
Good.
Now they they don’t have to use vegan condoms that are made with cocoa powder, which would leave them in the dark.

Just the opposite of my dearly departed mum’s adivce to me as a youngster: If the world’s going to be over populated, better with my kids than someone else’s kids.
I birthed three, adopted one, and am now waiting for the slackers to get crackin’ and provide me with a passel o’ superior grandbabies to ogle fatuously, spoil outrageously and shamlessly brag about. And they can use all the carbon they want as far as I am concerned.
Bob's Kid on November 23, 2007 at 10:59 AM
I think you’re misunderstanding the situation here. There is evironmentalism and “environmnetalism”, the former constituting say draining the swamps in Iraq for the Marsh Arbas to return home, the latter constituting paganism, apocalyptic doom mongering and preach the self-extinction of the human race.
Nobody seriously wants to damage the environment but we here don’t want to embrace mental illness, central planning or a civillisational guilt complex.

A righteous OT as far as I am concerned.

Btw, congratulations Slublog!

Mojave Mark on November 23, 2007 at 11:30 AM
This is so obviously a new religion. The next logical step is the ultimate self-sacrifice for their greater good, the environment. I am NOT saying this to goad them on, despite my passionate disagreement with their ideology… quite the opposite… I shudder at the thought of a precious human life killing itself. That said, I am certain that we will see “selfless” martyr-suicides inspired by a passion to save the environment. In fact, it seems to me that envirofascists and Islamofascists may develop much in common. We may even see environmental martyrdom operations that murder civilians, similar to Islamofascist terror. This is an entirely logical extension of the current radical environmentalism. It is simply a matter of time.

That woman is chock-full of irony:
“While most parents view their children as the ultimate miracle of nature, Toni seems to see them as a sinister threat to the future.”
Without children, there is no future.
“When I tell people why I don’t want children, they look at me as if I was planning to commit murder.”
She’s already been there and done that.
“I discovered that despite taking the Pill, I’d accidentally fallen pregnant by my boyfriend.
Don’t you love it when people act as if pregnancy is some unlucky accident occasionally caused by sex, rather than the main reason it exists? Something didn’t go wrong, it went right.
tikvah on November 23, 2007 at 11:35 AM
Need I remind Tony that by her act she has helped to condemn the planet. By not having children she is leaving the planet to all us stupid people and she should know, in no uncertin terms, that we stupid people will destroy the planet anyway.
She could have had children to grow up and shepard us but, no, her selfish thinking has helped to doom Gaia.

I’m pretty sure China has relaxed the one-child policy somewhat. Which is good, because not only has the policy created a generation very heavily weighted with males, it has created a generation of only children who have never had the opportunity to torment their younger siblings or rat out their older ones. Sad.

JiangxiDad on November 23, 2007 at 11:51 AM
Eh, she would have to feel that way to justify it. I admit, when I was about 15 yrs younger I considered having my tubes tied, not because I was worried about the environment, I just never thought I’d get married and have kids, and didn’t want to worry about getting pregnant. I even discussed it with a doctor who’s comment was how ironic it was that a responsible person as myself would choose never to have kids whereas irresponsible people were having kids left and right… boy was I young and stupid. I’m now married and have 2 great kids who I plan to raise to be conservatively minded, both politically and environmentally. And I wouldn’t change it for the world!
It is ironic that this woman has chosen to do something so contrary to nature. She’s lucky she’s living in a country where she can make that choice. Some people are not meant to be parents, it’s too bad others who aren’t don’t have the ability or the where-with-all to make the same decision.

Taking this logic (?) to it’s ultimate conclusion, wouldn’t it just be simpler and, of course, better for the planet if they did away with themselves? But then most lefties I know have never been introduced to the logic chain.
oilbertan on November 23, 2007 at 12:48 PM
Perhaps we should ask them if THEIR mothers should have taken the same attitude. >8-/
Or perhaps we could argue that they might be aborting someone who could have invented an amazing hybrid car or new way of generating energy w/o pollution?
But I digress. What use is logic on these selfish eco-retards anyway?
Dark-Star on November 23, 2007 at 1:02 PM
Sterilization and abortion aside, I have to admire people who are able to admit they don’t want children. But, let’s face it, people are selfish creatures. If this person REALLY wanted to have a child, rather than sacrifice her desire, she would make excuses for having a boat load of kids by saying she was bringing them up to be part of a ‘new generation of environmentally-friendly humans’. Instead, she’s playing the part of environmental martyr. How convenient!

I’m an environmentalist who is often disguisted with the environmental movement. I quit the Sierra Club, because I found it just too politically correct. When did “diversity” become more importance than the environment to environmentalists? I also hate environmentalists who can’t get basic economics into their heads. How can anyone expect an environmental policy to work if it makes no sense economically? There is also the problem that global warming is being quite overrated relative to other issues. However, I fear that part of the reason for overrating global warming is a concession to the right. By talking about the reducing carbon emissions, the environmentalists can avoid talking about overpopulation.
