Video: Jack Murtha makes a muddled Thanksgiving statement about raising taxes and, by the way, Iraq is unwinnable

posted at 9:23 pm on November 20, 2007 by Bryan

And he says this as tangible progress is being made toward victory.

The Washington Times has led on this story all day and now provides video along with a roundup of reaction.

This week, around our Thanksgiving tables, there will be two families: One who say they support the troops, and they do, but they have sacrificed very little. They haven’t had their taxes raised, they haven’t been drafted, and they don’t really participate in the war. The other are military families who have husbands and wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters in the war theater. It’s them who shoulder the burden of the President’s Iraq policy. America owes them our thanks in this Thanksgiving weekend.

So having your taxes raised somehow makes your support for the war more special? All that does is give Jack more of everyone else’s money to play with. To call him “contemptible” is to define that word down.

“Look at all the people that have been displaced, all the [lost] oil production, unemployment, all those type of things,” said Rep. John P. Murtha, chairman of Appropriations defense subcommittee. “We can’t win militarily.”

The Pennsylvania Democrat conceded violence was down dramatically and some normalcy restored on Iraq’s streets, but he said U.S. victory remains unattainable as long as Baghdad fails to pass national reconciliation laws.

“To change the political law, it doesn’t seem to me you need the military stability,” Mr. Murtha told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Even the New York Times has recognized that there is real progress being made in Iraq, and it’s obvious that the surge strategy has played a starring role in that progress. But that’s not good enough for ol’ Abscam Jack. Click to head over to Fishwrap and scroll down to see the clip. The video covers the first quote above.

It was bad enough that anyone voted for this miserable EX-Marine before, but if they vote for him in 2008, they need to have their heads examined. I hope Murtha is humiliated in the next election. He is not a man of honor.

Hypothetically speaking, is it wrong to pray for a person’s death?

That is a true statement no matter who says it. Never have the nations military burdens been carried by so few, while the rest of America is out shopping or gorging or gabbing on the internet.

The Pennsylvania Democrat conceded violence was down dramatically and some normalcy restored on Iraq’s streets, but he said U.S. victory remains unattainable as long as Baghdad fails to pass national reconciliation laws.

Murtha may be a creep, but General Petraeus is not.

There is no military solution to a problem like that in Iraq, to the insurgency of Iraq, political negotiations are crucial to forging any lasting peace.
- General Petraeus

Unseat Murtha. It should be unbelievably easy. The man is ethically corrupt (bribe, kickback scandals) and also morally corrupt (everything he has said in public in the past 18 months).

Love how he left out the third group that spends their time slandering our troops efforts, actions, and makes them out to be torturers. That group also is the one which refuses to work a 40 hour work week.

If America decides to leave them in power then we will deserve the hardships that follow. Thanks for nothing, cut-and-run conservatives.

One must first be a man of honor to be humiliated katieanne. The only thing a creepy scumbag like Murtha can be is done, spent and discarded. I hope he rots in he11.

Griz on November 20, 2007 at 10:10 PM

Murtha is as Murtha does; he is beyond salvage.

It is quite depressing, though, that he has been reelected time and time again for decades now — what are the people in Johnstown thinking?

For me, the politician that says he’s going to get me “stuff” is the one I send packing (or at least try to) so I am ashamed to have been born in PA.

ShoreMark on November 20, 2007 at 10:13 PM

They haven’t had their taxes raised, they haven’t been drafted, and they don’t really participate in the war.

He means we haven’t been bent over the barrel yet. He also doesn’t think it counts that we really do support the war, the troops, and what Pres. Bush is trying to do in the Middle East, or that we do try to vote idiots like him out of office so we can get someone in who supports the war and troops.

What a dirty SOB he is.

Someone seriously needs to give that old coot a gift certificate for a healthy Colon Cleansing. If there was ever a poster child for the elderly chronic constipation sufferer… Murtha’s the one!

Murtha needs to be taken to the HOME. Its a plain and simple fact that no political solution is ever gonna work unless it is built on the bedrock foundation of a military victory.

And we are getting there. One bad guy, one cell, one stinkin terrorist at a time.

dogsoldier on November 20, 2007 at 10:53 PM

I hope he’s held accountable for his defamatory actions

Kini on November 20, 2007 at 10:57 PM

Why is this contemptible man still in office? His “thanksgiving” speech will do nothing for the families of the men he drug through the mud.

Dave Shay on November 20, 2007 at 11:21 PM

Some people seem not to have realized that Ol’ Abscam Jack just said that stability and peace are not required for stability and peace.

The man’s a buffoon, on a good day.

No, Jack, the true peace is not a peace of arms – but when you’re at war, you need to GET TO the peace of arms before you can make the changes needed to make a true peace.

Does this Dumbass really mean that peace would be more readily obtained if we had simply walked away at the peak of the insurgency and let the civil war run free?

Or is he just playing the only cards he has left, after he’s torn up the rest of the deck?

Merovign on November 20, 2007 at 11:40 PM

The man is absolutely despicable.

csdeven on November 21, 2007 at 1:26 AM

Just watch. If Old Jack sticks around, he will morph into Bagdad Bob. As Iraq becomes more self-suffient and self-governing, Old Jack will still be crying that America can never win in Iraq.

My question is: what is the tipping point when the rest of the country realizes what a tard this fool is and calls for him to step down?

This broken down, corrupt, puss puppet wouldn’t be allowed to run a shift at Taco Bell, yet whenever he opens that gapping hole leading to emptiness someone has a microphone ready to capture his banal banter.

I hope Murtha gets a visit from the ghost of Thanksgiving future.

So I am not a patriot for not having my taxes raised? They have been raised. And raised again, and again.
He forgot one other group, the group that sits at homes and accuses our soldiers of atrocities that never happened. More than willing to raise my taxes to put that group behind bars and feed them.
