Democrats set to help jihadists again

Ethiopia is being a very useful ally to the US by dealing with the Islamists in Somalia. Since topping the Islamic Courts Union last year, Ethiopia has essentially fought that war so that we don’t have to, and is doing what it can to prevent Somalia from turning into the next pre-2001 Afghanistan. But Democrats are threatening to cut off military aid to Ethiopia on a human rights pretext.
A new war in the Horn of Africa would destabilize the region and bolster radical Islam’s push to build a Muslim caliphate.
Sadly, Congress is poised to fuel the march toward war by passing a bill that threatens to cut off technical assistance to Ethiopia, one of our closest allies, if it does not, among other things, release political prisoners, ensure that the judiciary operates independently and permit the news media to operate freely. Ethiopia has already freed opposition leaders, reformed parliamentary rules to give opposition parties greater legislative responsibility and approved a new media law that meets international standards. By singling out Ethiopia for public embarrassment, the bill puts Congress unwittingly on the side of Islamic jihadists and insurgents.
A far better approach would be to buttress Ethiopia against threats to its survival — by helping it resolve its border conflict and ensuring that it reopens negotiations with insurgents and traditional leaders and permits international investigation of reported military abuses (including allegations of rape and murder). Ethiopia has begun this process by allowing the United Nations and humanitarian aid agencies to assist civilians in the Ogaden.
Ace read the same article and rightly focused on the word “unwittingly.”
“Unwittingly”? I don’t know about that. This measure — an attempt to cut off our aid to ally-against-terrorism Ethiopia is part of an unmistakable pattern of Democrats seeking to undermine our allies and aid our bloodiest enemies.
Indeed it is. There is a pattern to what the Democrats are doing, whether they acknowledge it or not. I griped a bit a week or so ago at Democrat calls to cut off the Pakistanis for similar reasons. Whatever problems we have with Musharraf’s imperfections, cutting military aid from him objectively helps al Qaeda. I also opposed the Armenia genocide resolution for similar reasons; spitting in the face of useful allies is no way to go about winning a war. The Democrats are now cutting off funding to the troops in Iraq, which will a) force lacerations in the way the DoD can operate in Iraq and Afghanistan and will b) help every enemy we have on the face of the earth by directly weakening our military’s readiness. Democrats routinely let the perfect become the enemy of the good, especially if the imperfect good happens to be a US ally.
And while this is going on, Democrats and their allies routinely prop up Hugo Chavez as a swell chap in spite of (or because of?) his over the top anti-American rants.
Oh, and save Darfur, dude!

…aren’t Ethiopians still starving?
Let the 10%ers explain how cutting any aid to them helps that!
MadisonConservative on November 20, 2007 at 4:28 PM
Yeah… what ever happened to Darfur?
Vizzini on November 20, 2007 at 4:28 PM
They tried this with Turkey, now Ethiopia. I think the
WSJ will have something to say soon about it.
JiangxiDad on November 20, 2007 at 4:32 PM
When is something going to be done to deal with these traitors?
jdawg on November 20, 2007 at 4:36 PM
I’m in favor of divering aid destined for countries such as Egypt to Ethiopia. Look at their neighbors – Somalia, Sudan, and their arch-enemy, lovely Eritrea. It’s a rough neighborhood.
What caused the Democrats to suddenly focus on Ethiopia? Do they have some kind of angle here, or do they just like jihadists better than loyal allies?
forest on November 20, 2007 at 4:36 PM
I would love to hear a version of ‘Imagine” that actually espouses victory through superior firepower and funding our allies and troops. The Dems will be paying for their treason very soon, I have faith in Americans .
bbz123 on November 20, 2007 at 4:37 PM
We need someone with Absolute Moral Authority to say, “It’s because they’re black.” Sure, it’d be a lie, but it’d be a lie that the anti-Ethiopians would find difficult to refute.
calbear on November 20, 2007 at 4:39 PM
The Dems are of the belief that their favorability ratings are WAY too high. They needed to do something about it, right away!
kayawanee on November 20, 2007 at 4:42 PM
Why do Dems attack our allies and appease our enemies.
Why do Dems favor war that having nothing to do with
national security?

Do the Dems understand that The Horn isn’t a secret election plan involving Bill Clinton? It’s a place?
Hening on November 20, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Oh, come on now … if it weren’t for the Dems, we’d only have to fight the terrorists.
Where’s the fun in that?
yo on November 20, 2007 at 4:48 PM
Don’t you have to have some ‘wit’ to do anything ‘unwittingly’? I think ‘halfwittingly’ or ‘dimwittingly’ are more appropriate.
Nancy Pelosi would let a tapeworm eat her intestines if she thought it hated George Bush and would somehow bring about his demise.
pistolero on November 20, 2007 at 4:48 PM
Well if the standard for cutting off funding is:
And these are things the lefties in Congress consistantly accuse our government of doing, they would say it’s our moral duty to cut off funding to them, right?
trubble on November 20, 2007 at 4:49 PM
Can’t we just drop some cows out of planes to feed them ala Monty Python? And we get a side benefit: Retreat…retreat…
right2bright on November 20, 2007 at 4:50 PM
I wish W would sue the damn congress when all is said and done. Let’s see…
1) Treason
2) Conspiracy to commit treason
3) Insubordination
4) Aiding and abetting the enemy
5) Conspiracy to aid and abett the enemy
6) Providing material support to the enemy
7) Solicitation of murder
Okay, okay, maybe not so much murder per se, buuUUuuut, it sure makes me feel like killing someone when they put our boys in danger… Didn’t they run this by John Kerry’s “Global Test” people?
Califemme on November 20, 2007 at 4:51 PM
Dhimmicrats, is there ANY enemy they WON’T assist?
Tony737 on November 20, 2007 at 4:51 PM
Follow the money. OPEC coffers are overflowing. They are giving money to Africa nations to push Islam.
And African nations run to the Congressional Black Caucus and whine about how money is unfairly given to Christian Nations and Not Islamic ones.
And The CBC pushes the democratic party into taking action

Democrats don’t want to lose to Al Qaeda, they just want to win their own way. Kind of like pounding a square peg into a round hole. If you pound on it long enough the peg and hole will eventually conform to each other. Of course, neither the hole or the peg will be worth much in the end after being beaten hopelessly out of shape.
This is the kind of logic my 4 year old has with regard to solving problems. It doesn’t matter what the end result is as long as he gets his way doing it.
Lawrence on November 20, 2007 at 5:02 PM
They’re depressed over the news from Iraq. Good news and winning a war are like kryptonite to the donks. With their celebration for losing a war permanently put on the back burner, they can only lift their spirits by going after our allies on a different front.
That reminds me. Aren’t the Dems the ones who want everyone to like us. Everyone obviously does not include the Ethipoians. Too bad Ethiopia, you’re confronting terrorism with force doesn’t sit kindly with our surrender monkeys.

Incredible that these types of actions evade widespread scrutiny.
One more reason I am thankful for MM and places like HotAir.

Bryan,
It is nice to read your contributions more frequently on this posts, along with AllahPundit’s brilliant contributions!
I wonder when we can charge these people who attept to sell our our nation, and our allies, and who wish to support our enemies, with treason.

Dems taking action to help our enemies and hurt America? It’s what they do.
davenp35 on November 20, 2007 at 5:29 PM
Unfrigginbelieveable.
Operation HoA has been one of our more quiet and successful operations.
That the dems would play politics with our only ally in the region, just to score a few political points is despicable.
I am truly disgusted.

I gotta use an Ann Coulter quote for this:
Liberals are inherently anti-american. You could play scrabble with them and no matter what, they will immediately jump to the anti-american position.
The only time democrats care about the country’s money is if its going to assist or actually help the US out.
Defector01 on November 20, 2007 at 5:40 PM
They had to cut funding. How else is Murtha expected to pay for his pet projects?
RMCS_USN on November 20, 2007 at 5:42 PM
The Dhimms will alienate every ally we have. WTF is wrong with these people?
Do they think they’ll enjoy living under sharia law? I’m just at a loss, could they hate Bush that much that they’re willing to sell their souls(if they have one) and this country to our enemies?

Al Demoqaeda with ringleaders Hezpolosi & al-Reidan will soon rule the world.

They’re doing the same thing to our great ally President Uribe in Colombia. Since he was democratically elected in 2002, he’s taken the fight to the Marxist and criminal insurgencies and kicked a** like nobody’s business. At the same time, the murder rate, kidnappings, robberies, and other violent statistics have all declined while the economy has boomed. As his reward, the Democrats in Congress are witholding badly needed military aid and threatening to kill the FTA.
Uribe is no friend of Hugo Chavez and his Marxist “Bolivarian Revolution.” That’s pretty much all you need to know to explain the Democrats efforts to undermine Uribe.

As far as Allies go:
We continue to throw Israel under the bus. Pakistan is about half a step away from the same. So it kinda makes sense that Ethiopa would be next.
Lawrence on November 20, 2007 at 7:17 PM
You’ve all heard the quip that the perfect is the enemy of the good. This story is a reminder that the stupid is also the enemy of the good.
Democrats – selling out allies for table scraps since… well, pretty much forever.
Would that they cared half as much about the goal of disappointing our enemies as they did dissapointing our friends.
Merovign on November 20, 2007 at 7:22 PM
I think you’re on to something there. It looks like they will do just about anything to undermine Bush, and they clearly don’t give a damn about the Ethiopians, the Kurds, the Armenians or anybody who isn’t at odds with Bush at the moment.
forest on November 20, 2007 at 7:33 PM
In the past, we withdrew our support for the Samosa regime in Nicaragua, and for the Shah of Iran, because they weren’t doing things quite as nicely as we wished. What was the result? The Sandinistas and the Ayatollah Khomeniacs, both of whom were even worse than the ousted regimes, and viciously anti-American to boot. Abandoning your allies, even flawed allies, has consequences. Too bad the Dems haven’t learned that lesson.

Based on the latest congessional approval ratings, this move by the dhimmicrats is expected and welcomed. How else can they effectively remove themselves from congressional control as early as 2008?
Regarding Ethiopia, God bless Sir Bob Geldof. If you think about it, the effects of Live Aid in 1984 would make the current generation of Ethiopian children approximately in their early to mid twenties.
‘Nuff said.

As far as foreign policy is concerned, the American people know they cannot trust a Democrat President unless there is a Republican house and senate. The old Democrats of the 40’s and 50’s cannot be compared to the Democrats of today. Like comparing Zell Miller to Hillary Clinton. Hell, I’d vote for Zell Miller for President any day, but his breed of Democrat is gone and the party has been taken over by socialists and communists.
Neocon Peg on November 20, 2007 at 10:18 PM
The Democrat Party. Selling out friends, bribing enemies, and flushing US foreign policy interests worldwide down the $hitter since 1976.
Never forget that Jimmah set the tone for
peace treatiesforeign aid bribery with the Camp David accords in 1977 and the focus on “he’s our imperfect bastard, so let’s throw him under the bus for that trulyreligiousradical one” in 1978.Wanderlust on November 21, 2007 at 9:40 AM
