Video: Yellow Pages salutes Islam by claiming atheist and Roman Catholics as prominent Muslims Update: Video pulled Update: Video added

Via LGF, go take a look at this video that Yellow Pages produced to salute the contributions of Islam to the world. The entire video is a whitewashing of the global war on the jihad, casting Islam as completely misunderstood and all of Islam’s critics as filled with ignorance and hatred. That’s not so unusual among big corporations. What is unusual is the video’s outright lies. In a section about prominent Muslims’ contributions to modern life, it lists Frank Zappa, former NH Gov. John Sununu and former Secretary of HHS Donna Shalala.

Though he had Arab ancestry, Frank Zappa was an atheist. Donna Shalala is a Roman Catholic. John Sununu is also Catholic.

The video also claims former Sen. George Mitchell and Spencer Abraham as Muslims. I haven’t been able to debunk that yet, but I doubt that it’s true. It claims several other prominent figures as Muslims that, to say the least, deserve some fact-checking.

The Yellow Pages video evidently conflates Arab ancestry with belief in Islam, which is ridiculous: Many Christians, Jews and members of other faiths have had to flee Islamic countries to escape persecution by Muslims.

Update: George Mitchell is a Maronite Christian, and Spencer Abraham is Christian as well. Curiously, the video doesn’t mention one prominent Muslim musician: Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam. I wonder why?

Update: They pulled the video. Too bad for them that I’d already downloaded it. If it ever comes out of processing limbo at YouTube, I’ll post it here.

Update: You always have to stay a step ahead of those devious minds at Yellow Pages. They pulled the video but it lives on, with a little fact-checking added to the end.

Update: Robert Spencer finds two more “Muslims” who are actually Christians.

Lying is effective among the population. It is sad that there are so many lies. That’s the main reason I am so jaded, and it is the main reason I believe in what the written word of the Bible says. Written words can not lie. People can and do.

The guy who does Family Guy.
the Rev. Sun Yung Moon
The Rev. Al Sharpton

That is a marginalized new company that hopes to get attention through a viral method. If they want to talk about discrimination, they could pick out 10 daily stories of Muslims discriminating against non-muslims around the world at this site here.

They would have to do a mini-series to go over all of the Christians that have impacted the world for good.

Even though they’re apparently just making $#!% up, the best they could come up with is Frank Zappa? I like Zappa, but I wouldn’t call “G-Spot Tornado” a contribution of Islam to the world, even if Zappa were Muslim.

Bin Laden, though, did build all those day care centers.

Isn’t music haram in Islam?

Off with their heads.

Frank Zappa? - I guess Moon Unit must be a nickname for the meteor stuck in the Kaaba.

The Yellow Pages video evidently conflates Arab ancestry with belief in Islam, which is ridiculous: Many Christians, Jews and members of other faiths have had to flee Islamic countries to escape persecution by Muslims.

It’s amazing how common this malfunction is among moonbats and other easily flim-flammed morons. The funny thing is that the same people who don’t know a damn thing about Islam are the first ones to accuse others of “ignorance”.

I had a sneaky feeling that The Pope was actually Muslim. EURKA!!!

robblefarian on November 19, 2007 at 2:15 PM

It’s an extension of the propaganda drivel that muslims are a race, but I bet if zappa’s ‘dynamo hum’ was played over the load speakers in mecca, there would be riots in the streets and calls to burn zappa in effigy.

(pssst…he’s already dead)

Very scant list (relative to the billion Muslims)
There is such a dearth of Great Muslims

I’d like to see them accuse Bridget Gabriel of being Muslim.

forest on November 19, 2007 at 2:17 PM

According to NNDB, Abraham is Eastern Orthodox. It also says George Mitchell is Roman Catholic.

amerpundit on November 19, 2007 at 2:18 PM

Zappa was raised in a Catholic home, before he made a decision to become an atheist. In reality, while an incredibly gifted composer and musician, do Muslims really want to claim some of his behavior while on the road. I understand he had a life long taste for the ladies. And, by the content of his lyrics, more than a passing aquaintance with fetish practices.

On the other hand, I am taking my son to see Zappa Plays Zappa tonight at the Seattle Parapmount! Dweezil’s career choice right now appears to be carring on Frank’s legacy and not letting his music fade away. Special guest tonight: Ray White.

Mitchell and Abraham both have Lebanese ancestry. Both have also been elected to the Senate. Of course, fleeing Lebanon is usually a sign one is not Muslim (not always, see the “Lebs” involved in Australia riots in recent years). And as Representative Keith Ellison is touted as the first Muslim elected to Congress, this rules them out as Muslims.

Of the three — Mitchell, Abraham, and Ellison — the last is the only one whose religion is mentioned in his Wikipedia article.

raybury on November 19, 2007 at 2:25 PM

Wouldn’t it be fun if some of these guys sued for libel? Or is it slander? I’m confused in the instance of a video.

TexasDan on November 19, 2007 at 2:26 PM

How could they confuse Abraham. He served as a United States Senator. Ellison (win in 2006) became the first and only Muslim in Congress.

amerpundit on November 19, 2007 at 2:27 PM

Y’know, now that they mention it, I can see some koranic influence in the Zappa classic “Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?” and “The Mudshark Arpeggio”.

(btw-I always thought he was of Italian descent. Shows what I know, huh.)

Nonblonde on November 19, 2007 at 2:28 PM

Great all along I thought the yellow book commercial’s

The producer of the video used to listen to “I want a horny little Jewish princess, with sandblasted zits, and titanic ….” when he was in the frat house in college, and just assumed.

Jaibones on November 19, 2007 at 2:45 PM

I recommend that the producer arrange a round table discussion with some Sharia types to reflect on the entire message of Overnight Sensation…

Jaibones on November 19, 2007 at 2:46 PM

And let’s not forget General John Abizaid, USA, (ret.), former commander of CENTCOM–known in his West Point days as “The Mad Arab.” (His parents are/were Lebanese; he’s a Christian.)

This article may have a good result: it may stop some from making the erroneous and stupid assumption that anyone with Arabic or Persian ancestry is automatically a Muslim.

baldilocks on November 19, 2007 at 2:46 PM

Too bad Frank’s not here to refute this BS. I’m sure he would in no uncertain terms, he was quite an intelligent person.

Hmmm… so since I’m of Irish ancestry, does that mean I’m a druid? Or that since I’m of Italian ancestry (on the other side), does that mean I worship Jupiter? Apparently, according to this add it does.

I had a minister who had way too many vinyl albums, mostly jazz lining walls in his basement. I recall being shocked to see a Zappa CD in his living room with one of the songs titled “G-spot serenade.” Apparently a) it was acoustic and b) he had no idea what it meant.

raybury on November 19, 2007 at 2:56 PM

Absolute crapola.

Waiting for Robert Specer’s response. It will be a doozey.

One of the comments at the YP video site mentions the latest “muslim terrorist-on-muslim children” incidents of yesterday, when a suicide bomber killed children getting candy from American soldiers.

What the heck is YP doing in the religion-promotion business, anyway?

Maronites are Catholic. They are in communion with Rome, although not “Roman” Catholic, per se (or part of the Latin rite). Part of the Eastern Catholic Churches.

GEORGE MALOOF is a Muslim?

Owner of The Palms CASINO?

Did Yellow Pages get their intern to script this video?

sandcrab on November 19, 2007 at 3:22 PM

George Maloof is NOT a Muslim. But he is an Arab of Lebanese descent who is very sympathetic-like the other Arab Christians mentioned (such as Spencer Abraham)-to the Muslim causes. He is vocal against profiling, for example. And that’s the thing with all of these Arabs who are mentioned as Muslims. In fact, as I’ve frequently noted on my site, Muslims frequently compare themselves to mainstream Arabs, like QB Jeff George, singer Tiffany, or Bobby Rahall, in order to make us think they are just like them. So I’m not surprised that Yellow Pages made this mistake.

sandcrab on November 19, 2007 at 3:22 PM

That’s what I was thinking, too. Looked it up, he’s another Maronite Catholic all right!

RW Wacko on November 19, 2007 at 3:43 PM

Hey, someone should put together a list of all the non-Muslim Arabs, vastly outnumbered by their Muslim counterparts, who have gone on to accomplish great things. Would like to compare that list to the likes of Keith Ellison and the ones left over after everyone debunks most of the people on their already thin list.

As I watched the piece it reloaded to the homepage for searchboth. All the other heritage pieces they have there still function correctly, but muslim heritage will only take me to their homepage.

Ya think they finally figured it out?

Jim708 on November 19, 2007 at 4:20 PM

The link is still there from the heritage page. To find the heritage page just copy and paste any of the following into the url where it reads muslimheritage.

Jewishheritage
Americanheritage
Blackheritage
Persianheritage
Gayheritage

Jim708 on November 19, 2007 at 4:25 PM

It would be really funny if they said that Christopher Hitchens is a Muslim.

Speaking of which, Cavuto just announced that Hitchens is coming up next to explain that Romney’s religion is fair game.

What is amazing about this article is that there will be many, many people who will belive this garbage and not fact check it because Yellow pages has to be factual. They can retract it but the damage is done, they are just following the typical MSM,NYT,LAT,MSNBC,NBC,ABC,CBS and all the other left wing type journalistic type stories. Make a false statement and most won’t check it out anyway. I am so glad for HA and the internet to get the “Rest of the Story”.

LOL, ROTFLMAO, SURE thing! and Islam is the Religion of Peace. Riiiight.

KCtheKat on November 19, 2007 at 5:31 PM

Yet another non-muslim declared muslim in the video was Nick Rahall. He’s of Lebanese descent, but he’s a Christian. By the way, Rahall has good odds of replacing Robert Byrd. I think we’ll miss Byrd if we get this replacement.

nosliwelyk on November 19, 2007 at 6:45 PM

Okay Debbie, next time I’ll add a smiley face or sumthin’ to my post!

My point about MALOOF & CASINO was that it should have been glaringly obvious to even the most casual observer that MUSLIM (aka MALOOF) & CASINO anywhere near each other should have been a ‘clue’.

sandcrab on November 19, 2007 at 6:55 PM

And it appears that Joseph Abboud is another mistake: “The Abboud family was a working-class Christian Lebanese family,” from the Wikipedia entry.

Not surprising, though. The whole concept of having a video to explain the Muslim contributions to modern civilization smacks of desperation.

If the makers of this video were really confident they are right, then there is no need for a video. Let actions speak for themselves. There doesn’t have to always be a damned PR initiative.
