Video: Local media receives crash course in property rights

posted at 12:39 pm on November 19, 2007 by Allahpundit

Watch it, then try to guess which state it was filmed in. I got it on the first try.

Update: The reporter should have claimed that he’d developed an “emotional attachment” to the land. Then he might have been able to confiscate it.

Blowback

Now, why would you guess it would be one of us Texans, AP? :P

bikermailman on November 19, 2007 at 12:42 PM

Get off my land.

I love property rights.

The dude just peeking his head into the frame like that was priceless…

freakagriep on November 19, 2007 at 12:46 PM

“That’s assault”.

That’s trespassing.

amerpundit on November 19, 2007 at 12:46 PM

Texas, probably San Antonio. I believe KENS is the station there.

jharada on November 19, 2007 at 12:47 PM

I admit, I cheated and looked at the link…. San Antonio, Texas. But Texas did come to mind.

That guy was perfectly within his rights to kick the news team off his property, more people should do it. There seems to be all too little respect for private property these days. It’s good to see people exercising their rights. You know how it is, RIGHTS …. use them or lose them.

Maxx on November 19, 2007 at 12:48 PM

So, the guy advises the news crew that they’re on private property, and they just ignore him and keep on going.

Arrogant little pissants.

flipflop on November 19, 2007 at 12:49 PM

Yeah. THAT’S ASSAULT… to heck with property rights… DON’T TOUCH THEIR EQUIPMENT!

The arrogance of the media is astounding.

Warner Todd Huston on November 19, 2007 at 12:51 PM

What arrogance-

Getting told that they are on private property and the guy just ignores it and talks about the “wonders of live television” then the anchors worried about assault and the crazy guy that bothered their anchor!

highhopes on November 19, 2007 at 12:53 PM

“Are you guys OK?” — “That’s assault!”

Anchorbimbo is totally clueless.

infidel4life on November 19, 2007 at 12:54 PM

At the link, why does “his” property have quote marks on the “his”?

MayBee on November 19, 2007 at 12:54 PM

Yet another reason we need socialism. Some “individual” thinking he has the right to interfere with the Media getting Truth to the People. And there’s also obviously racism involved. I’m calling Al Sharpton.

eeyore on November 19, 2007 at 12:54 PM

We’re on your property, huh!
We’ll just keep on reporting and ignore you.

Kini on November 19, 2007 at 12:55 PM

Let’s not let breaking a few trespass laws get in the way of a news story.
If the property owners show up, just ignore them, we are elite, and we have our rights!
Flipflop nailed it-Arrogant little pissants.

leanright on November 19, 2007 at 12:57 PM

jharada on November 19, 2007 at 12:47 PM

Yes, it’s San Anton. I use to live in outside of SA.

terryannonline on November 19, 2007 at 1:00 PM

Note the peculiar absense of anything even remotely resembling a Texas accent from any of the three newscritters, there in San Antonio.

Nice sweater, sport…

Jaibones on November 19, 2007 at 1:03 PM

Things live on my property at my pleasure.

TheSitRep on November 19, 2007 at 1:04 PM

Chuckle-worthy in the extreme.

Bob's Kid on November 19, 2007 at 1:04 PM

The only thing missing was Roberta Aguilar:

“Why did you grab my camera? Are you a camera happy person? Is that it?”

Captain Scarlet on November 19, 2007 at 1:05 PM

I must admit San Antonio local news is the most sensationalized local news I’ve seen.

terryannonline on November 19, 2007 at 1:07 PM

So, the guy advises the news crew that they’re on private property, and they just ignore him and keep on going.

Arrogant little pissants.

flipflop on November 19, 2007 at 12:49 PM

No kidding. That once again shows what what dumb f&%$ks the news media is full of.

saiga on November 19, 2007 at 1:11 PM

Oh course “You’re on private property” carries more weight when accompanied by a Remington 870.

Frantic Freddie on November 19, 2007 at 1:16 PM

Things die on my property at my pleasure.

I’m reminded of that line from Seinfeld where they ask Crazy Joe Davola why he keeps his apartment door unlocked: “I like to encourage intruders.”

saint kansas on November 19, 2007 at 1:17 PM

Ha — I guessed correctly, also. Gawd, I love Texas.

Splashman on November 19, 2007 at 1:20 PM

Damn, I thought the property owner had a Massachusetts accent.

Dusty on November 19, 2007 at 1:22 PM

Frantic Freddie on November 19, 2007 at 1:16 PM

Yup. it’s Texas. They’re LUCKY they weren’t gunned down.

Mazztek on November 19, 2007 at 1:25 PM

Another reason among MANY others why I love being a Texan!

df4jc on November 19, 2007 at 1:40 PM

saint kansas on November 19, 2007 at 1:17 PM

Yeah I’m just waitin’ baby, just watin’.

When the media interviews me,
I’ll being pointing out the tight group.
Between drags off a Marlboro, in post-coital fashion.

TheSitRep on November 19, 2007 at 2:02 PM

“That’s assault”? Looks like they have no clue about private property. Not to get to angry, but when the guy told the “Hey Jackass” to leave he should have taken the hint.

I love how the crazed guy kind of pops up out of the blue behind the reporter.

Would it be assault if he’d have taken out a shoutgun and more forcefully made them leave?

It cracks me up how the press seems to think they are above the law. I bet it never crossed their minds to get permission to use the person’s property.

Rode Werk on November 19, 2007 at 2:07 PM

KENS5 is a San Antonio station (CBS), but that happened just east of Seguin off Hwy 90. The cameraman’s wrist was broken in the incident. I’d say that’s uncalled for, but it could’ve been worse. I knew one crazy guy out there who had a canon on his roof…

VerbumSap on November 19, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Assault? Nope. As a Texas CHL holder and overall “gun enthusiast” I would’ve at least exercised my right to display my Remington 1100. I think that would’ve stopped his story short.

BirdEye on November 19, 2007 at 2:27 PM

By the way…I love South Texas. I knifed this guy in April:

Piggy

BirdEye on November 19, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Whoa, is this guy an ex-Green Beret or sumthin’? The way he pops up from behind that dude it looked like he was gonna, um, put his training to use.

Tony737 on November 19, 2007 at 2:56 PM

Well, it’s true that if the property owner didn’t want them there, it is trespass. However, they were just reporting a news story, so I’m not really sure what the big deal is?
As soon as they’re done, they’re just going to leave anyway. But it really did make me mad when the guy just ignored the property owner and then the anchorwoman started claiming assault….. Arrogant.

KMC1 on November 19, 2007 at 2:58 PM

The big deal is an old legal maxim known as “Meum et Tuum”…

mojo on November 19, 2007 at 3:21 PM

Leave Reporters Alone! Leave em alone! You cant understand how hard it is to talk about events that already happened in an interesting and informative way to people that are too stupid to understand it unless you explain it to them!

Neo on November 19, 2007 at 3:24 PM

What arrogance. The reporter just smirks and blows the guy off and the wench at the station gets all uppity. “Don’t touch a REPORTER! Common people can’t touch REPORTERS!”

peacenprosperity on November 19, 2007 at 3:30 PM

Jaibones on November 19, 2007 at 1:03 PM

I was born and raised in San Antonio Texas and when I joined the Army at 18 years old and went north for basic training, people I met were always surprised that I was a Texan, because I sounded more like a yankee. No one in my family had an accent except for my dad’s mom who was born and raised in Cajun country and it was not a heavy accent.
Most of my family go back to the beginning of Texas and includes Ben Milam.

WildBillK on November 19, 2007 at 3:42 PM

It’s like that old saying, “Trespassing begets assault”.

Kevin M on November 19, 2007 at 4:10 PM

Even if it is his property, which none of you have proved yet, it still doesn’t give the guy the right to beat people up.

SoulGlo on November 19, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Umm, who got beat up, Soulless?

Or do you just generally make things up and argue against them?

Merovign on November 19, 2007 at 4:48 PM

it still doesn’t give the guy the right to beat people up.

SoulGlo on November 19, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Just because they are reporters that doesn’t give them the right to trespass.

csdeven on November 19, 2007 at 5:00 PM

They’re lucky they didn’t get a yelled warning followed by a load of rock salt.

mojo on November 19, 2007 at 5:09 PM

SoulGlo on November 19, 2007 at 4:38 PM

If there’s someone tresspassing on my property I don’t have to whip out my deed, they have to move it or lose it.And yes,I do have the right to see how hard they’ll bounce if they won’t move.

Frantic Freddie on November 19, 2007 at 5:17 PM

Watch it, then try to guess which state it was filmed in

Uh, Texas? All you had to do was watch the news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

RMCS_USN on November 19, 2007 at 5:26 PM

Man!

The one time a San Antonio news station is reporting something that doesn’t involve a miraculous incarnation of the Virgin Mary on a tortilla or something, and this guy has to go and kick them off the property!

Doesn’t he know that they had to search far and wide to find 300 square feet of Central Texas earth absolutely devoid of miraculous naturally-occurring images of the Holy Mother?!

The nerve!

Mephistefales on November 19, 2007 at 6:00 PM

Let’s not let breaking a few trespass laws get in the way of a news story.

That’s a natural since they aren’t worried about national security either. Privacy of any kind is also a no-no for them.

docdave on November 19, 2007 at 6:09 PM

KENS-5 is still on the air? It’s been a long time since I’ve watched television…

From northeast San Antonio, this is

Rusty Bill on November 19, 2007 at 8:18 PM

Private property!! What’s that??! Just don’t enter the reporters personal space while we invade your home or we’ll scream assault!

KENS says man attacks cameraman

VerbumSap on November 19, 2007 at 11:47 PM

Found the link about the cameraman’s broken wrist. http://seguingazette.com/story.lasso?ewcd=b09346b63379689f
Seems the news team claims they moved to what they believed was a public access road right after the property owner told them to leave. Of course, I’m watching the video and seeing no signs of them moving, just ignoring. It looks like they’re on a dirt road in the video, so maybe there was an earlier confrontation prompting them to move to that location?

frost on November 19, 2007 at 11:47 PM

Drat, spend a few seconds previewing what you’ve typed and look what happens…

frost on November 19, 2007 at 11:48 PM

SoulGlo on November 19, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Actually, a property owner does indee have the right to forcibly eject trespassers. He will probably be no-billed in an assault charge.
