NYT quotes Hot Air commenters in article about Shep Smith’s new contract

The David Brock principle at work: If you’re a conservative and you want to see yourself quoted by the media, the surest way is by attacking another conservative.
Which isn’t to suggest that Shep’s a conservative.
Although Fox did not release the exact terms of the new deal, an executive briefed on the them said that Mr. Smith, who is 43, had signed a new contract for a little more than three years at a salary of $7 million to $8 million a year…
[O]n occasion, Mr. Smith has seemed to take positions that have raised hackles, especially on conservative Web blogs that otherwise strongly support Fox News. Last March, Mr. Smith spoke out in support of the science that says humans contribute to global warming, saying, “those who would doubt global warming need to read up.” For his trouble, posters on the site Hot Air called him “fairly unbalanced,” and needing to be “in an institution for the insane.”
No link to HA, of course, but then this same article refers to Shep as “Mr. Shepard” a ways down so the complexity of the href tag may have eluded them.
I have reason to believe Shep’s seen some of your comments in the global warming posts, although I’m not at liberty to say how. If my source wants to come forward, identify him/herself, and elaborate, he/she is invited to do so.
In the interests of kissing the ass of a man now worth $20 million, I offer you three of his greatest hits. The righteous Duke lax meltdown; the Paris press conference snarktacular; and of course, comedy gold:

Shep Smith is a loon, almost as equally crazy as the New York Times.
(Trying to get that quoted.)
amerpundit on November 19, 2007 at 1:25 PM
Quote me, too!
Shep Smith is not nearly as smart as Olbermann, yet makes more money! I’m shocked and appalled.

Hey, Shep! I know you’re probably reading this…

Eh, I don’t hate him. I just want to fix him.

Shepard Smith belongs on CNN. There is nothing “fair and balanced” about that t**d. He is a flaming liberal and doesn’t mind letting you know that. Not only that but he surely isn’t worth $8 mil whatever his political leanings.
I’ll leave my thoughts at that – I don’t want to get Michelle in trouble or get banned!
Hope you read this Shep!!

For my part, I’m just trying to get quoted. :) Made sure to get in the part about the NYT.

I dunno guess I needed to say “Shep Smith mentioned on Hot air is like Satan conducting anti mass in Heaven”
Or something like that. heh

I don’t mind Shep Smith. I disagree with his little editorial asides sometimes, but he’s no Olbermann.
Put that boring quote in your article NYT! I dare ya.

Of course he’s a flaming lib. At least he lets you know. I don’t know why a guy would watch his show, but maybe that’s just me. I like how the guys on FOX get a blond “assistant”. That part is good.

My opinion of Shep Smith peaked back during Bush v Gore when he attempted to park his car on a reporterette who’d set up office in his space.
That was awesome. Old school, badass rat pack cool.

Maybe in the world of reporting,or news anchors,
Shep has realized, that in the swamp of Liberal
news reporting,Shep has learned to keep his
Conservative friends close,and his Liberal
adversaries in the news room closer.

What’s a blow job? Is it a bad word and I just don’t know it?
saint kansas on November 19, 2007 at 2:01 PM
I don’t hate Shep, I just wish he’d report the news instead of editorializing with his liberal opinions. Plus he gets the vapors way too often for somebody who isn’t getting paid to do news commentary and analysis. Sure, he’s better than Olberdouche, but you could train a monkey to be a better journalist than Olberdouche.
ReubenJCogburn on November 19, 2007 at 2:01 PM
Shep needs to broaden his horizons and read the opposing views to global warming. Not everyone agrees with Al “Mr. Internet” Gore’s interpretation of the world’s weather. I resent Shep’s condescending comment and attitude on this subject.
I find Shep very annoying at times, but he certainly isn’t in the same category as that freak from MSNBC. I hope John Gibson is making big bucks. I like him. :)

ThackerAgency on November 19, 2007 at 2:17 PM
Shep follows Brit Hume in the evening. Have you watched Brit Hume and then Shep? It’s two different worlds!
If Fox is paying Shep 7 to 8 mil a year, Brit ought to be making atleast twice that since he’s more than twice the newsman.
Retread on November 19, 2007 at 2:19 PM
Apparently cherrypicking comments from conservative blogs is the new easiest way for the NYT to talk to the “dark side” w/o getting their hands dirty. How convenient. We’re serving up quotes for them, and there’s no context to fuss about.
AP, how can we be sure the NYT isn’t (or won’t be in the future) planting the quotes? Not that I disagree about the sentiments chosen in this case, but seriously, comments on a blog as quote material? Talk about anonymous.
TexasDan on November 19, 2007 at 2:23 PM
The worst part about the guy is he pulls against LSU and for Ole Miss!
abinitioadinfinitum on November 19, 2007 at 2:26 PM
If the NYT ever qoutes me I better see a big fat royalty check in my mailbox. FOX can qoute me for free.
Tony737 on November 19, 2007 at 2:28 PM
I think Brit’s more than twice the newsman of almost anybody in the business these days. Although Chris Wallace is good too–the whole FOX debate crew made the other networks look like amateurs.
ReubenJCogburn on November 19, 2007 at 2:28 PM
IMHO, I am beginning to see a slow morphing of Fox News into a sensationalist format. This would explain Mr. Smith’s high salary at the expense of true journalists such as Brit Hume( if that is the case). I have consistently been uncomfortable with most of the storylines these past few months along with the production efforts towards glitz. I wouldn’t be surprised if Michelle would completely boycott the network because of it’s lessening professionalism.
MNDavenotPC on November 19, 2007 at 2:28 PM
Shep’s alright. He tends to get a little carried away at times but some of his zingers on the stories he has to read are priceless. He has had to take a vacation or two because of it. Too bad I am normally watching Glenn Beck or BBC America when he is on but I still watch him once in awhile.
LakeRuins on November 19, 2007 at 2:33 PM
My favorite Shepard Smith story occurred during Katrina. He went into a bar in Nawlins, and asked [incredulously] “Why are you in a bar, and not evacuating?” The guy in the bar said “That’s none of your “fu*&ing business.” It was so unexpected, that it didn’t get censored.
As for me, I loved it – and wondered, why was Shepard Smith in a bar, and not evacuating?
OhEssYouCowboys on November 19, 2007 at 2:42 PM
Although the editorials in the NY Times are as predictable as the night following the day and the editorials are as dry as dust, the Times does have some first rate reporters. Dexter Filkins, who covered Iraq for about 3 years, was the best in the business. He is one of those reporters whose articles you could read for many years and not have any idea what his personal political views were. And the Times did have one exceptionally good reporter covering the Israeli-Arab dispute. That was James Bennett. He was one of the few reporters covering events during the last six years who was not reflexively antiIsrael. During this same period of time, there was not one fairminded reporter at the LA Times, Washingon Post or Boston Globe covering the Israeli-Arab dispute. At those newspapers, the reporters should have been collecting their salaries from al-Jazeera.

See Shep’s J Lo coverage for a strong hint.

I actually like Shep. He’s laugh out loud funny at times. He’s from the same town as my Aunt (Holly Springs, MS), so maybe that is clouding my judgement :-) Sure, I don’t always agree with him, especially if he is blaming people for global warming. That’s just wrong! On balance, I think he does a credible job and has a quick wit. I’m with ya Shep!
Ordinary1 on November 19, 2007 at 2:48 PM
Just admit you were looking over his shoulder checking out his iPhone last night at the Manhole and you saw him checking HotAir out. Now the question is, why were you at the Manhole? We know why he was (allegedly), but you’ve become that desperate AP?

Hmmm, so Allahpundit is your “source” going to rat us out to Shep, that we are all sitting around plotting his professional demise?

If by slow you mean “racing the lemmings over the cliff edge” then I completely agree. I’m sick of the Ho Patrol (Nothing with the names Britney, Lindsey or Paris should be “breaking news” on a reputable news channel, ever) and the Missing White Women Network.

OK, I do agree with this. FOX News Alert means anything they want it too, even if it happened the day before or if a cat is stuck in a tree. It is quite annoying. I don’t blame Shepard Smith for that though. I think he does a good job with what he has.
True that. Skinnerville was fun too, back in the day.
Ordinary1 on November 19, 2007 at 3:02 PM
I like Shep, or I used to. His comments on global warming and some remarks lately about the war have caused me to have considerable pause. He also lost a bit of ground with me during the Katrina meltdown.
He needs to remmeber who brung him to the dance.

Shep’s (and Fox News) coverage of the bomb scare in Boston started out as sensational panic, and as it became obvious that those placards were not bombs, the coverage morphed into a Saturday Night Live parody skit. It ended with Shep signing off with his serious news caster face on, while his eyes twinkled, and the broadcast crew was providing the laugh track in the background.
What I want to know is how do they get that sparkel in his eyes? Is it accidental, or do they deliberately set up lighting to do that?
That twinkle in his eye is worth at least 2 mil.

On a personal level I like Shep, he’s not a stuffed shirt, he doesn’t seem to take himself so seriously and for the most part he doesn’t condescend to the audience. He makes me laugh sometimes, even when he’s not suppose to. I’m actually happy for him, all the best Shep, congratulations sincerely!!
But Bill Carter gets it exactly wrong when he claims Sheppard Smith was speaking “in support of the science” when Smith told his audience to “read up” if they doubted man-made global warming. There simply is no science that supports the claim of man-made global warming, even the IPCC admits that once you back them into a corner. They don’t like to admit it because they have everything to gain by causing climate change treaties to be enacted. The IPCC pushing man-made global warming is the perfect example of a conflict of interest. Are so called “global warming deniers” the only ones that can see that? Has there ever been a more transparent fraud than man-made global warming?

Heh, you guys are overreacting. True, Shep’s not an intellectual/ideological firebrand, but that’s not what he’s paid for.
Shep is just eye candy for the “light news.” My girlfriend likes him, along with the accompanying cute pics of animals on his show.
Anyways, he seems like a nice guy. Congrats, Shep.
TallDave on November 19, 2007 at 3:21 PM
He’s reporting on progress in Iraq right now – loaded with qualifying words to make it seem doubtful, all but calling the reports lies, and concludes his intro with, “encouraging, I guess.” Pathetic.
Laura on November 19, 2007 at 3:22 PM
Oh! And now he credits Sadr, and ethnic cleansing for the decrease in violence!! JERK. But he supports the troops, I bet.

Attitude adjustment and a history lesson. And a reminder of who he works for. I think when he gets rid of the orange tan, he’ll ne OK. Look at Olberdouche. Orange tan all the way, and he’s wacked out of his skull.

Hmmm, having been in a cat 5 hurricane myself, I did not find anything disturbing about Shep’s Katrina meltdown. If you have never actually been in a hurricane you just plain have no idea how terrifying they can be. I was only 8 when Camille struck Florida but I most assuredly do remember watching a whole lot of adults act exactly the same way Shep was acting during Katrina.
We were sitting on a man made atoll about a half a mile off Key West, called Sigsbee Island, which has since been renamed to Dredgers Key. My dad and the other sailors there were having a hurricane party and getting really hammered because they knew if Camille hit us full on we were all going to die.
I of course had no idea of the danger we were in so I was having a grand old time. Sneaking drinks and smoking cigarettes and doing stuff my folks would have killed me for if they had been paying closer attention. But they were having a pretty tough time keeping some of the hysterical people from flipping out more than they already were.
So no, Shep gets a pass on that one from me.
doriangrey on November 19, 2007 at 3:29 PM
Good for Shep. Now, can we get an actual conservative news channel? I want to see MM at 8 followed by Ann Coulter at 9. World news at six hosted by Rush, if you please…. Wow, what a lineup!

The Katrina coverage by Smith that people are referring to occurred after Katrina had passed when he got his panties in a wad about the Superdome, etc. How the newspeople thought they could report the things they did without first hand observation was mindboggling. The NO Times Picayune did a yoeman’s job of debunking all the crap/rumors that Smith and the other newsies passed on without any confirmation whatsoever. Smith has never ever apologized for that reporting travesty.
Laddy on November 19, 2007 at 5:24 PM
Sadly, Fox News is becoming the Peterson network. First we got Lacy and Scott Peterson 24-7. Now we have Stacy Peterson 24-7. How many times do we have to turn on Fox News and see this dissheveled pathologist from New York named Baden or something like opining on all manner of subjects? On the weekend, Fox News now has a program called “Lineup” which is nothing more than a sensationalist crime show. Granted, the hostess of the show is very beautiful, almost on a level with Cindy Crawford, but the show is nothing but blood and mayhem.
Yes, it is better than watching C-Span 11 but couldn’t we have some alternative programming?

Remember dorian, I live on the Gulf Coast myself, and have been through some pretty good blows myself. In fact, we got slammed by Rita about one month after Katrina, which was a bigger storm I might add. My problem with Sheps coverage had to do with the crying about “where is FEMA”, “people are dying here” without ever once slamming the POS mayor and governer of that state. He fed the feeding frenzy that shifted blame from where it belonged and onto the Bush administration.
Too often, Shep follows the easy media line along with CNN, MSNBC and the networks. I think it is because he is trying to make himself look appealing to them for future anchor desk openings at the networks.
And therefore he loses my trust.
