I'll admit that I don't get NASCAR, but neither did my parents until they saw it live.

They're in the car business and won some tickets through work. One there, all of it seemed completely clear. My father even started talking strategy, but on TV it still just looks like hamsters in a cage to me going round and round.

I'm with you, Levy. Let's you and Rudy and Allah and me take in a race next season.

Moonshine-runners trying to evade an overbearing government during Prohibition created a backwoods sport that within two generations has been elevated to worldwide phenomenon, internationally respected racing scene, and the second most-watched sport in the U.S. (behind only NFL) fueled by a host of colorful personalities, aggressive competition, and funded by unabashed commercialism. Damn straight it's the best of America.

Are there really “Levy haters” out there? I had no idea I inspired that strong of an emotion in anyone, good or bad…

RW - the "turning left" thang wasn't aimed at you.

Also, I am unfortunately much more of an insomniac than I am a drunk. I wish it were otherwise.

The “left turn” jokes are waaay stale, and ignorant. If you don’t “get” NASCAR, you don’t get NASCAR. But not even counting the road course races, it’s a helluva lot more than only turning left.

BTW, y’know who else didn’t get NASCAR? Karl Marx. Oh, and Hitler. Hitler didn’t get NASCAR at all.

Levy on November 20, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Haha, I didn't realize I made any "left turn" jokes? I think all I said was that I didn't get it... unless you're referring to this line:

He sits there drunk with his 2 kittens watching the cars go round and round for hours.

RightWinged on November 19, 2007 at 10:13 PM

Which was actually a joke less about NASCAR, and more about your cats and the fact that Levy haters claim you appear hungover. I could be wrong, but I think you've been labeled a drunk (even though that's not the impression I get, I think it's a widespread one).

Anyway, to clarify - I don't get it, but I know it's huge so there must be something to it, but not something I think I'll ever be in to. Anyway, the important thing was that you are a fan, and settled that. I was beginning to wonder if I had been missing a joke all along. Bottom line, Ashlan Gorse is unbelievably hot.

Yeah, there’s also going faster and slowing down!

Blasphemy.

NASCAR is a great sport. It's got speed, power, endurance, skill, strategy and passionate fans all rolled into one package.

Go sit in a grandstand sometime (my preferred track is Talldega) and take in a race. When those cars come screaming into the tri-oval on the final lap it's one of the greatest moments in sports.

Plus, it's got topless chicks in the infield. And you can drink beer while laughing at those dumb-ass Jeff Gordan fanboys.

I am indeed a huge - and possibly the world's only Jewish - NASCAR fan...

Allah, dunno where you got the idea that I don't read you any more...

Giuliani couldn't be pandering any harder at this point...

Anybody remember that Fred Thompson played the head of NASCAR in "Days of Thunder"??

Rightwinged, early in the show I was giving my Yahoo Fantasy NASCAR picks...

Here's a fund raiser for the GOP: strap Rudiani to the front grill of Tony Stewart's Home Depot 20 and let 'er rip.

Seriously, I would pay a month's salary to see it. Double that if Tony would make a right turn at 190 m.p.h.

Let's not forget that in 2004, John Kerry actually made the claim that he "was one of the founders of New Englanders for NASCAR". Nobody could ever find any evidence of such an organization or of John Kerry's role in the formation of such an organization. Not that the Boston Globe tried to verify Kerry's boast. Somebody should have asked Kerry:" How many members of the Hendricks racing team can you name?" If he could not name two such members, and I am sure that he could not do so, then the whole world would know that he was a fraud. Each year there are two huge races in Loudon, New Hampshire, one for Busch series and one for NASCAR series. Nobody has ever seen evidence of John or Teresa at any such race and in New England, anybody who can get tickets goes to both races. But Kerry is equally boastful of other sports as well. He claimed that he once ran and finished the Boston Marathon. Note that Mr. Kerry would never say what year he supposedly did the Marathon. That way, nobody could verify whether he actually did so by checking the race records.

I was not commenting on Rudy's obvious pandering -- which by the way is officially permitted during campaign season. He can also shake hands of people he doesn't like and even kiss a few babies. I was explaining why the NASCAR fans love Rudy by explaining why they can't like Fred, the obvious choice for "redneck NASCAR fans". They cannot like Fred, because Fred chased down moonshiners for a living and NASCAR has roots in moonshine runners.

They love Rudy, because they have to hate Fred, the anti-moonshiner.

OK, there is no way to guess what in the Hell he's talking about here - and no reason to try.

But doesn't anybody else see the irony? The same individuals who called Fred Thompson's pickup - and I'm quoting here - "The most evil deception in the history of the human race!!!" - are now (albeit incoherently) trying to somehow use Fred Thompson to explain how Rudy Giuliani's brand spanking new red-necking is More honest than any image ever projected by any politician since George Washington.

To top it all off, as I recall, these are the same same people who constantly accusing EVERYONE ELSE of "fixating" on Fred Thompson.

And this is different from John Kerry’s 2004 “hunting trip” in Ohio how? At least we have, to this point, been spared an Ivy League educated traitor asking “is this were I can get me a huntin’ license.” Hillary’s campaign has yet to get away from the vagina-in-chief crowd but once they do, watch out.

Yeah, she might be ok three weeks of the month with a gun in her hands, but anyone know what her cycle days are?

Living in Manhattan involves a permanent slo-mo Nascar race, right outside your window. Believe me, there is ZERO interest in cars from Manhattanites. People who drive them are derisively referred to as "the bridge and tunnel crowd,"-- or worse, "from N.J." Even Manhattan illegals don't want driver's licenses.

If there's any interest in "cars," it's trying to find a taxi when it's raining.
