I feel obliged to link it, to help round out our readers’ knowledge of foreign film after some of them blanked on Final Jeopardy this morning.
This is one of those parodies where I think I get it but still feel some nagging doubt that I haven’t quite gotten all of it. 60s kitsch, B-picture production values, grotesque European overacting — right, right, but is there something else? Some specific American film it’s goofing on that I’m not aware of (the Adam West “Batman” series excepted, of course)?
Some film buff’s going to know. And then I’ll be sad.

I’m thinking Johnny LaRue.

I’ll take a shot. There was a movie my father made me watch that, after having watched it, concluded that both those who made the movies in the 60’s and those who watched movies in the 60’s were high…all…the…time. It was a movie starring James Coburn called, The President’s Analyst. I don’t recommend it, but this clip did remind me of it. Seriously, for those on this blog old enough, what in the world happened back then?

Looks to me like something a college kid threw together for a journalism assignment.

Love the Ducatis

Oh, it gets way stranger than that! That clip is at the end of the movie where the all the conspiracies coalesce to point to one single conspirator…the phone company! The really strange stuff happened earlier. But again, please, no one watch that movie. It yields no benefit whatsoever, to any aspect of the human condition, on any level.

Bingo > > > we have a winner.
He plays a mean trumpet.

It reminds me of watching Italian TV when I lived there in the late 70s, early 80s. I always wondered where classic American programs like ‘My Mother the Car’ disappeared to until I moved there. Bad TV. Really bad.
pistolero on November 16, 2007 at 10:36 PM
OMG, pistolero, I remember that show, and you are right. It was really bad.
bbz123 on November 16, 2007 at 10:38 PM
Nothing is better than Turkish Star Trek, well cept Indian Thriller.

That was WWWWEEEEIIIRRRRDDDD. But funny. I was giggling like a little girl through the whole thing. I wouldn’t get any inside jokes if there were any. But it was still awesome.

Nacho Libre.
Cuffy Meigs on November 16, 2007 at 11:21 PM
Pretty sure it’s just making fun of Italians.

P.S. Allah, maybe you’re just thinking of Ron Jeremy.
MirCat on November 16, 2007 at 11:41 PM
Early SCTV. Candy was a kid in this.
thegreatbeast on November 16, 2007 at 11:49 PM
You think My Mother the Car was bad in English, try it with goofy Italian voice overs. ‘Mama Mia, mia macchina e mia mamma reincarnata!’ Good grief.
pistolero on November 16, 2007 at 11:55 PM
that was great

In Like Flint! Oh yeah!
Back then, when I was a boy before the war, the bong was just being perfected.

This is obviously one of the greatest films ever made.
“Shut up pussycat, and get me a mocchiato pronto!”

I’d like to think that I contributed in some small way.
But I don’t remember, exactly.
pistolero on November 17, 2007 at 1:00 AM
I could tell that everyone in Hollywood was high from those Sid & Marty Krofft kiddie shows in the late 60s, early 70s. That and the Banana Splits.
NoSquids on November 17, 2007 at 1:10 AM
You can count how many movies made in the late 60s through the 70s were ever aired on TV with your fingers. As for nostalgic TV from the same era, same thing. The reason is that even Hollywood realizes how ridiculously stoned the entire cast, writers and producers appear during their productions.
Coronagold on November 17, 2007 at 6:55 AM
Has nobody seen Zardoz?
Is anyone familiar with the works of Ken Russell?
What about “O, Lucky Man”, which just came out on DVD?
Asher on November 17, 2007 at 10:10 AM
As someone who remembers late 60s television, that was truly hilarious.
HeIsSailing on November 17, 2007 at 10:32 AM
I like the intro where he was smoking a cig. Is there anyone who wasn’t smoking on TV back then?
Neo on November 17, 2007 at 10:41 AM
No 35mm film was harmed in the making of this movie.
Shy Guy on November 17, 2007 at 11:40 AM
With all the US comedians going morose, this is the best thing I’ve seen this century.
Bravo, bravo!!!!!
Hening on November 17, 2007 at 11:52 AM
This is more like it!
Banzai!
Weight of Glory on November 17, 2007 at 12:20 PM
I see quite a bit of this being paradied.
HeIsSailing on November 17, 2007 at 12:35 PM
Aha! Now I am hitting pay dirt. Not from Italy, but the genre is definitely there.
HeIsSailing on November 17, 2007 at 2:30 PM
HelsSailing,
I don’t know if you noticed in the video you linked about the Lambrettwist video but during the part where they showed a bunch of different ethic types riding on the machine the one black guy is actually a white guy in blackface!
Gee, I thought Europe was so much more sophisticated and culturally better than us knuckle-dragging Americans. Who knew that European actors were still using blackface in the 60’s! Ha!
Why do liberals love European culture so much? Oh yeah, it’s the socialism!
Weebork on November 17, 2007 at 3:37 PM
HelsSailing,
Oh my God, you are on a roll!! Japanese Spiderman!!
I just finished laughing for about a minute straight. Of course a Japanese Spiderman has to have a giant, transforming, flying robot!
Hilarious!
Weebork on November 17, 2007 at 3:41 PM
Now that’s serious wah-wah guitar. The villain with the snake was actually quite good, and creepy, and if I was ten years old he would be pretty cool.
“those who made the movies in the 60’s and those who watched movies in the 60’s were high…all…the…time”
You need to get hold of a film called Danger: Diabolik. It’s like Barbarella, but even more gaudy and kinky and weird. It was spoofed on Mystery Science Theatre 3K. The hero drives around in a sexy white Jaguar E-type. Needless to say he gets the girl.
“Has nobody seen Zardoz?”
I have that on DVD. It came out in 1974 – post “2001″, when all sci-fi films had a trippy bit with lights. The commentary track is very funny because the director, John Boorman, is obviously both embarassed by the film and fond of it at the same time.
Also, it has breasts. And it has Sean Connery’s breasts too.

Or not.
sanclemman on November 18, 2007 at 12:47 AM
Heh, if I was a liberal cry-baby I might be offended by all of this seeing as how I’m Italian and all, but then again maybe I can hang a garlic noose on my front door and create a hate crime! Hmmm…maybe I’m a liberal after all?!?!
Excuse me while I put down my Italian joke book to report a hate crime…oh crap I just realized something, not only am I faking a hate crime against myself but I’m a hypocrite as well for having an offensive non-PC Italian joke book…aaaarrrgggg….I AM A LIBERAL….NOOOOOOOO…..I DON’T WANT TO LIVE….MAMA!!!
