Video: Final Jeopardy — sudden death

I’ve never seen this before, and if Trebek is right, neither has anyone else for about 20 years. A strange clip for many reasons: it’s the semifinal of the Tournament of Champions and yet the Final Jeopardy answer is a gimme; even so, the guy in the lead totally blows it; and what about the betting? The players in second and third should be going for broke (or nearly broke, to leave themselves a cushion in case all three players get the question wrong). Instead they left themselves open to losing if the guy in the lead had made a $2 bet and got the question right. There must be something here that we’re missing.
Also, the sudden death round is sort of … anticlimactic, isn’t it? Give us a little timpani or something, Trebek.

It’s not easy to play under pressure, look what happened to Cliff Clavin.

Dang, I love Jeopardy.

I’ll take Anal Bum Cover for $200, Alex.

“Not a fan of the ladies, are ya, Trebek?”

People have the habbit of thinking that if it is obvious to them it is obvious to everyone. Either that or Allah is showing off the fact that he’s a big film buff.
- The Cat
P.S. Reminds me of the time a guy put what he wanted the outcome to be if he got the question wrong as the bet instead of what he could afford to lose. He was all smiles until he realized what he did after Alex said who the winner was.

What Frank said.

Even I “knew” (guessed) the right answer, and I know diddley-squat about movies.

I tune in to Jeopardy almost every night. While I can’t stand Trebek, I do enjoy the mental challenge of playing along with the contestants.
During a show last week the final jeopardy question had to do with the Persian Gulf. When they came back from the commercial break Trebek says, “OK, let’s see how our contestants did in the category of the Persian Gulf. I hope they know more about it then our current administration does.” I wanted to reach through the screen and pop that hoser right in the nose.
It’s reaching the point where you can’t sit back and be entertained by a program without hearing some kind of anti-Bush propaganda. You have it crammed down your throat on Jeopardy, on Sunday Night Football, on sitcoms, dramas, the History Channel ….. it’s everywhere, and it’s annoying as hell.
There, I vented.
Hey Trebek, FU.

Yeah, it’s not that every last American should be expected to know this answer, but every last Jeopardy champion certainly should. It’s a famous foreign film with a unique title, something they’re bound to run across when studying for the show.
Allahpundit on November 16, 2007 at 9:47 AM
No? Then I’ll take The Rapists for $400.
James on November 16, 2007 at 9:51 AM
Never heard of it, but I don’t know many foreign films that aren’t Japanese and about a blind samurai.
frankj on November 16, 2007 at 9:52 AM
But, but, the administration is silencing it’s critics, taking away free speech.
reaganaut on November 16, 2007 at 9:54 AM
I’ll take “gibots” for $1000.
csdeven on November 16, 2007 at 9:58 AM
Dude, 8 1/2 people…Go rent it.
WillBarrett on November 16, 2007 at 10:05 AM
And your answer was…’Suck it, Trebek.’ Thank you, Mr. Connery. Let’s see what Burt Reynolds wrote for his answer.
James on November 16, 2007 at 10:19 AM
No? Then I’ll take The Rapists for $400.
James
The Penis Mightier for $600
Krydor on November 16, 2007 at 10:19 AM
He did not. Please – tell me he didn’t. You’re making that up, right?
Sigh. Oh, the stupidity.
What is wrong with these people who think it’s their job to tell me their opinion on something that has nothing to do with their show and about which they know absolutely nothing?
At this point, I have deep admiration for any celebrity that just shuts up.

I can’t stand to watch this.
If your head is filled with useless trivia, there can’t be much room left for important things.

I knew the answer to the tie-breaker. I won my only Trivial Pursuit with the same answer. I don’t think I’ve answered a Jeopardy question correctly since. sigh.

I knew it was something between:
What is “The Magnificent 7“?
And:
What is “Plan 9 From Outer Space“?
profitsbeard on November 16, 2007 at 12:24 PM
Opusrex,
I love that video.
What makes it so funny-besides the appearances of Greg Khin and Dr. Demento-is that Weird Al graduated from High School at 16 and ended up with a Bachelors degree in architecture or something.
Yes. I have waaay to much time on my hands.
annoyinglittletwerp on November 16, 2007 at 12:48 PM
I had no idea. But I regard almost movie made before 1990 as a painful waste of my time.
TallDave on November 16, 2007 at 1:03 PM
Hmm – I tend to consider myself a film buff (well, a movie buff anyway), but I don’t mind revealing that I’ve never heard of this movie, that I feel pretty good about myself never having heard of this movie, and that I would’ve probably written “What is a film that has never been in my kitchen?”
However, the fact that two of the three contestants knew it tends to indicate it was indeed a good wheat-chaffe separation question in the Champions semifinals.
But why was the category “THE MOVIES” when it was a perfect setup for “FOREIGN FLICKS”?

Those of us whose heads are filled with useless trivia know that there’s alway room for something else. /useless trivia-headed ho
baldilocks on November 16, 2007 at 1:36 PM
It may have been a “gimme” for you, but it was a “gotcha” for me. I had no idea…even after I heard the answer. Sounds like an Italian movie and, as someone once said/wrote: “foreign films are best left to foreigners”.
Blaise on November 16, 2007 at 1:57 PM
Don’t know if I’m ashamed or not to say:
‘Have a Film degree, and a Movie Buff background, and I’d never heard of this movie either.
8 1/2, yes…Had to study the bugger.
