Man’s most perfect creation to become even more perfect?

Yeah, but in an annoying way.

Apple has confirmed that it has plenty more upgrades to come for the Apple iPhone.

“All the complaints and feature requests we’ve had can be fixed and added by software upgrades”, a spokesman for the company told Pocket-lint…

Since its launch in the US in June, Apple has been criticised for leaving out some key functionality, like the ability to record video via the included digital camera and greater Bluetooth support beyond voice functionality.

“For the average mobile phone most people only use around 10%, Apple didn’t want that to happen with the iPhone.”

Why’s this annoying? Because it leaves poor chumps like me who are saving our cash for v2.0 in limbo, wondering whether there’s even going to be a 2.0 or whether they’re just going to roll out a few upgrades sporadically and call the resulting upgraded machine 2.0. Techies are speculating that dangling the prospect of future homemade killer apps is Apple’s way of dissuading people from hacking the phone to install their own (or, worse, getting a Gphone instead). I think it’s as much about squeezing us fencesitters into buying now instead of waiting for the 2.0 that may or may not be on the way and that may or may not disappoint us when it eventually arrives. Exit question: If I buy now and then the awesomely awesome super-souped-up 2.0 drops in six month, will I be able to get one of those “disgruntled sucker” refunds Apple specializes in? (Exit answer: Nope.)

v2.0 iPhone will be the one with all the hardware upgrades. Those are contingent on the U.S. carriers upgrading their networks to support such hardware. So, until then they’ll just keep issuing firmware updates.

Plus they keep trying to outrun the Ringtone hackers and jailbreakers.

Apple will end up screwing up their iPod and iPhone business just as it did it’s computer lines. They are too much of control freaks. V1.1 has shown that to be true with the iPhone only to have Apple say it will have another release sometime in February to allow 3rd party aps. Yaw right. They remind me of politicians, they don’t listen to the public, they just do as they please.

I still say save your money and get the Verizon thing that’s coming out soon… it’s tough to justify spending outrageous amounts of money on electronics these days when they’re virtually obsolete every 6 months. Seriously, look at the specs on computers. What’s new one day is standard 6 months later, and then weak 6 months after that. Same with cell phones. You get the latest greatest camera phone for a couple hundreds bucks and 6-10 months later it’s the free phone and you can sometimes get more than one free for a share plan.

I’ve got an LG VX8300
http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phones/lg-vx8300-verizon-wireless/4505-6454_7-31812933.html

Despite the prices they’ll show you on that page, you can pretty much get it free, and you have been able to for almost a year, sometimes more than one free (my brother and his wife did just a couple months ago). But I bought it in June 2006 (with a new plan) for about $85 (and that was because I had a discount.. I think it was supposed to be $130 or something at the time)

For those unfamiliar with the tried and true practice:

In other cases, vaporware may be announced by companies in order to damage the development or marketability of more real products by competitors, sometimes in combination with a campaign of fear, uncertainty and doubt; if customers believe the hype, they may put off purchasing the real product to wait for its vaporous rival to mature.

Dude, before the iPod and Iphone apple stock was next to worthless because of their computer line. Are you familiar with their stock? I have had iPhone and have iPod. The iPhone is junk, the iPod is nice. The iPhone touch is nice but lacks storage space and the wi-fi has poor range.

And Dude for your information apple stock is about 30 points from the yrs high.

I LOVE my iPhone, but that’s to be expected as I’m an Apple/gadget guy. My wife, who otherwise has no use for gadgets, loves hers as well.

Amazingly it will only keep getting better as features are added. As for now, I’m happy with the best phone ever, or evah, as is customary on this site.

I am so on the WAIT team. My apple G4 lapper was stolen in less than a year ownership, but in the mean time the MacBookPro came out so I had no choice but replace with the MBP. Lemons out of lemonade i thought at least I was getting the newest, lastest greatest.

Um, while it is not a complete lemon…I think I should get more wireless freuquecie bars than one, 5 feet away from the wireless router. I bought a new router and it is a bit better, but not much. It looses connection (which means you have to get up and go by the router, so the succor when you are cozy in bed) and the …

Long story short…wait till they work out the wrinkles.

It should be about the time you buy the IPhone equivalent of a Mac Book G4 and in a few months come out with the IPhone MacBookPro.

I hate computers and technology rate of progress, in all ways shapes and forms you end up on the sucky end.

Topsecretk9 on November 16, 2007 at 10:22 PM

I love my iPhone especially after this recent firmware upgrade. You can now add custom ringtones by changing a file extension of the music. This used to work then Apple patched and now they un-patched it. Seems like a compromise to those of use accustomed to using technical means.

By the way, a big thanks to Hotair for posting those “download to your iPod” links on HA originals. They stream directly in the iPhone’s web browser; and with the headphone jack, I can hook the phone to my car’s stereo system through the Aux jack. Which means: Hotair in the Car! Makes the commute better. Get it now AP, you can always eBay it.

I don’t know how I got by before I had an iPhone. I’m totally serious. It’s the best bit of tech I’ve ever owned. My only complaint has been the GSM feedback buzz while I’m trying to listen to music, but I got over it because the rest really is so awesomely awesome. Fantastic device, and completely worth it.

Really AP, set up a paypal account and I’m good for $50. But a better idea would be to auction off a dinner in NYC with you. I think you’d be surprised how many people want to meet you in person. Then you could get something really useful, a ticket to Moscow for a month. Trust me, that would give you something to live for.

RD on November 16, 2007 at 11:34 PM

Wade,

You obviously haven’t the foggiest idea what you think you know about Apple computer. They have the highest market share they’ve ever had. I bought the stock at 50 a year and a half ago. I bet you wish you had as well.

(viewing Hot Air on my iphone hasn’t been this fun yet. )

BirdEye on November 16, 2007 at 11:52 PM

Oh, and Allah… I’m good for 50 bucks too. Its the least I can do to repay over a year and a half of solid news and entertainment from you.

BirdEye on November 16, 2007 at 11:55 PM

BirdEye on November 16, 2007 at 11:52 PM

While I don’t necessarily agree with everything Wade says, he does have a valid point in this case — before the iPod’s launch in 2001, Apple stock was at something like 19 or 20 a share. Since the launch, it has climbed steadily to its current level, which is like 175 or so at the moment (and 190 earlier this year); so it’s safe to say the iPod definitely added considerable value to Apple.

I think each iteration of OS X since 10.0 has also done quite a lot for Apple in that time — I mean, Apple’s current market share for hardware has risen from 3% at that time to its current 6%. It’s a tiny number, sure, but it has also doubled on the strength of the operating system, the hardware (which isn’t nearly as proprietary as many Windows zealots would have us believe), and the overall high quality of the product.

Splashman on November 17, 2007 at 1:58 AM

Oh yeah, regarding the “annoying” software updates, some people really work hard to find reasons to complain. Every other phone has its basic functionality locked into the hardware — if you want more features, buy a new phone, sucka. Because of the iPhone’s touch screen, almost every feature is upgradable. One presumes that those who buy the iPhone have decided the existing feature set is worth the price. So added functionality from free updates is pure gravy.

Except to whiners and Apple bashers.

Splashman on November 17, 2007 at 2:05 AM

I’m waiting for that all-important kettle upgrade. I don’t see why I should make do with a phone that doesn’t make a nice cup of tea.

AP: I almost got you the best Christmas present ever. There were a ton of “win an iPhone” raffles at Blog World Expo. I entered all of them. The plan was to win an iPhone, get a picture of me holding the iPhone and standing next to Mary Katharine Ham, send the picture to you and let you soak it in for a week or two (don’t know if that qualifies as a “heartache” or “red meat” subhead). Then I was going to send you the iPhone (I’m locked in to Verizon, so I wouldn’t want it right now).

Alas. I didn’t win any of the raffles. Maybe if you start asking questions about Jesus and snap the feet off our your Darwin fish the Boss will get you one for χmas. :-)
