Drug smuggler of Compean/Ramos fame gets indicted

Can’t say I’m surprised. The guy is a career criminal.

More than two years after being shot and wounded by a pair of U.S. Border Patrol agents later convicted in the shooting, an admitted Mexican drug smuggler faces federal charges, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton said.

Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, who was shot in the buttocks in February 2005 after fleeing from border agents during an attempted smuggling attempt, has been indicted on charges of smuggling marijuana in September and October of that year.

Aldrete was arrested Thursday at an El Paso border crossing on charges of possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, conspiracy to import a controlled substance and conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

The agents, Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos, were convicted last year of shooting Aldrete and lying about it. Both were sentenced to more than a decade in prison.

Aldrete is scheduled to appear in federal court in El Paso today.

“For more than a year, critics of the prosecution … have complained that Aldrete, the fleeing, unarmed drug smuggler they shot, should have been prosecuted for drug smuggling,” Sutton said in a written statement. “I have repeatedly said that if we obtain sufficient competent and admissible evidence against Aldrete, we would prosecute him.”

CNS News provides more detail about the indictment. Surprise! He was smuggling drugs while the US was allowing him to cross the border to testify and obtain treatment for his wound.

Aldrete now faces two counts of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, one count of conspiracy to import a controlled substance and one count of conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

The alleged offenses happened between June 1, 2005 and Nov. 30, 2005, which is when the government gave Aldrete a pass to enter and exit the country unsupervised, primarily to get medical treatment for his bullet wound.

Your tax dollars paid for the treatment and your government gave a known drug smuggler a pass to cross into the country unsupervised, which he used to smuggle more drugs.

Given the nature of this story, I would have thought you would have gone with a beef fajita pic.

Heh. If my brain wasn’t addled by a cold, I’d have thought of that.

Given the nature of his injury, a picture of flank steak is entirely appropriate.

James on November 16, 2007 at 10:39 AM

Great…open them borders…bring em all in…did he have a drivers license?

right2bright on November 16, 2007 at 10:40 AM

I suppose that next we’ll see the U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton jailed and/or fined for “hate speech”…

Absolutely disgusting. So, can we now lock this perp. up for the rest of his life?
I wouldn’t mind my tax dollars helping pay for that, oh and to relieve us tax payers a bit, can we let Compean and Ramos go now?

U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton is one stupid ass with seditious blood running thru his tequila laden veins.
.
What does this say about our border ‘control’ and who really is in control.
We’re out gunned, out manned and now we’ve got the enemy at top levels of our justice system.
.
SUTTON, WHAT ARE THEY PAYING YOU???

You should be the one in jail, take those two decades and serve them yourself.

Least.

Surprising.

News.

Ever.

Are you OAD lovers/Border Patrol haters happy now?

So what reasonable and decent people want to know now is, when is Johnny Sutton going to get the Mike Nifong treatment?

I would have thought perhaps a rump roast.

doriangrey on November 16, 2007 at 11:06 AM

It might be a while.

I not much of one for conspiracy theories, but what’s going on at the border stretches credulity. No attention to incursions of heavily armed drug escorts deep into US territory; no attention to scores of kidnappings around Laredo/Nuervo Laredo.

The real red flag for me in this case was Sutton’s willingness to stipulate that Davila was unarmed, solely on Davila’s statement that he was unarmed. Yea, a drug mule with $750K in drugs is travelling unarmed. Sure.

Something more is happening here, and nothing will touch Sutton until we know what that “something” is.

…did he have a drivers license?

right2bright on November 16, 2007 at 10:40 AM

Three of them, actually. “Hey, can I get my licenses back, man? Those cost me a pretty penny!”

True, but Bryan chose a picture of flank steak. Works just as well.

James on November 16, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Hmmmmm….is it possible that the Justice Department simply gave Aldrete plenty of rope and ample opportunity to hang himself with it? I certainly wouldn’t want him under “supervision” if I were looking for a way to bust him for the scum that he is.

Oh, I get it these are shot-in-the-butt jokes… well play gentlemen.

I can’t say this surprised me though….

No. We’re talking about the government here. Think about it.

Oldnuke on November 16, 2007 at 9:17 PM

Read the transcripts

For 4 days of the trial Ramos and Compeans lawyers made sure the jury knew that OAD was a career drug dealer and was probably armed

It was the 5 border patrol agents who testified against them and Ramos’ startling testimony and Compeans written confession that they tried to kill him that got them convicted

Not a third tier drug dealer who is going to spend most of his years behind prison

Had R&C just done their job and cuffed the guy they would be out on the road today

doriangrey on November 16, 2007 at 11:06 AM

Never. Unless some Republican can convince the defeatocrats on the Judiciary Committee to delay holding hearings into whether our military may have tortured some poor, misunderstood jihadi using women’s underwear, and hold a hearing on this, nothing will happen.

…what is incredibly disgusting to me is that Davila was given medical treatment for the bullet in his a$$ at a military medical facility.

GT on November 16, 2007 at 12:37 PM

No. It was well known that Davila had brought in another load of dope early on in the Ramos/Compeon mess. In fact, Sutton took steps to ensure the jury was not informed of this second load since it would have ruined Davila’s “credibility” as Sutton’s witness.

91Veteran on November 16, 2007 at 10:39 PM

91VETERAN

It was Sullivan – Compeans attorney who agreed that the second load was irrelevant – it was discussed on days one, two, and three

However the judge didn’t let Stillinger – Ramos’ attorney, try OAD for it

This was about why these two shot an unarmed man and left him for dead, lied to their superiors
