Dreams come true: Bush to congratulate Gore on Nobel win in Oval Office

The most awkward reunion since Gary Dotson and Cathy Crowell Webb refused a hug on the Early Show happens Monday, November 26.

[T]he President and former Vice President will meet at the place where Gore once thought he had enough votes to sit — the Oval Office. Bush is expected to congratulate Gore and other US Nobel Peace Prize winners in a ceremony.

It’s no secret that President Bush doesn’t see eye-to-eye with most of Gore’s talking points on the issue of climate change.

What’s probably going to defuse this neutron bomb of discomfiture is the fact that the Goracle shared the prize with a UN agency, whose representatives will be present and, probably, plentiful. That’ll give each of them a human buffer zone from the other, although a painful handshake and a few cringing jokes about the oddness of the moment will be obligatory.

Rhetorical exit question: If the Goracle seizes the moment by getting in Bush’s face and speaking half-truths to power, will it qualify as a Colbert moment (good!) or a Bollinger moment (baaaad)?

That’s right, Bush, give the bastard some more credibility.

Thanks for yet another bad decision.

tickleddragon on November 16, 2007 at 3:36 PM

This just seems soooo unnecessary. No wonder they say Bush is dumb terminally naive. Gag.

petefrt on November 16, 2007 at 3:40 PM

As much as I despise the Goracle and his b.s. religion, and as worthless as I think the Nobel Peace Prize is these days, Bush is doing the classy thing.

Mindcrime on November 16, 2007 at 3:41 PM

Pres. Bush is being… well…. presidential. What would you have him do? Act like Gore?

MNDavenotPC on November 16, 2007 at 3:44 PM

Granted it’s the classy thing to do, but keeping mouth shut can be classy too, especially when the cost of opening it is so high.

petefrt on November 16, 2007 at 3:44 PM

Pres. Bush is being… well…. presidential. What would you have him do? Act like Gore?

No, like Bolton.

Being presidential, acting above the fray, playing nicey-nice with the Dems ….. they’ll eat you alive.

Bush is an honorable guy, but he hasn’t learned you’ve got to play hardball with the donks.

fogw on November 16, 2007 at 3:50 PM

Bollinger, is actually a pretty good champagne.

What does it matter what Gore does or says to Bush?
Bush was President, twice, and Gore is irrelevant.
Oscars and Nobel Trophy prizes gather dust and are forgotten over time.
Bush’s legacy is assured, no matter what happens.

Cheers!

Kini on November 16, 2007 at 3:50 PM

This is one of those things, like pardoning a turkey, that a President has to do. It would be a snub NOT to recognize the “achievement.”

That being said, I would hope that GWB keeps referring to HIS desk, HIS chair, HIS office, HIS administration etc. ;-0

highhopes on November 16, 2007 at 3:54 PM

Gore has made a career on lies and hoaxes…Mr. Internet and the great global warming farce. Naturally, he gets a Nobel Peace Prize, a worthless gesture since they gave one to Arafat. Actually, in that sense, it makes sense Gore gets one.

It may have been classy for Bush to do this, but IMO, it would have been better to ignore Gore and not reward his lies and Bush bashing ways.

katieanne on November 16, 2007 at 3:55 PM

I’m afraid that I’d neither invite to the White House, nor shake hands with, a Leftist who bellowed about my having “BETRAYED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!.

Unless, of course, I felt that Gore’s accusation was correct.

OhEssYouCowboys on November 16, 2007 at 4:00 PM

katieanne on November 16, 2007 at 3:55 PM

From that standpoint Katie, it really doesn’t matter. Gore has already been rewarded beyond his wildest imagination. If GWB had ignored this “achievement” then Gore and the Moonbats would be screaming about the snub. This way, it’s all over in a few moments and a bit of fumigation afterward.

Besides, perhaps it will give Gore the opportunity to explain how junk science promotes peace.

highhopes on November 16, 2007 at 4:01 PM

One can display a lot of class simply not denigrating stupidity. One is not required to embrace it.

The most awkward reunion since Gary Dotson and Cathy Crowell Webb refused a hug on the Early Show…

I saw that and I have to say that was the most awkward moment I have ever experienced. And I was just watching it on TV.

Bush should invite Trey Parker and Matt Stone dressed as ManBearPig.

Bill C on November 16, 2007 at 4:07 PM

There’s actually a great opportunity here, though Bush won’t take it. But if it were me, I’d direct this question to the UN panelists:

“Would someone explain to me how studying climate change gets you the Nobel Peace Prize?”

And I’d make sure the cameras were rolling for the response.

MNDavenotPC on November 16, 2007 at 3:44 PM

Exactly. Humiliate Gore by doing exactly what a President is supposed to do. Gore will be fuming because he’ll know he could never have done it.

I’m afraid that I’d neither invite to the White House, nor shake hands with, a Leftist who bellowed about my having “BETRAYED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!.”

Congratulations, that’s almost verbatim what Sean Hannity said about the visit. Even played the “betrayed” bellowing.

highhopes on November 16, 2007 at 4:10 PM

Oh being Bolton would be great, IMO… but not possible. I’m not saying that I would want Pres. Bush to be a Casper Milquetoast , either. If Gore would begin to pontificate, I would want the Pres. to interrupt and say, “Not today, Toady!”

MNDavenotPC on November 16, 2007 at 4:11 PM

CP on November 16, 2007 at 4:14 PM

To be honest, I have gotten very tired of President Bush always being classy, being a gentleman.

It was a refreshing change for the first four years to have a Gentleman in the WhiteHouse, but it hasn’t done him a bit of good.

Long past time for some Harry S Truman or Teddy Roosevelt tye of straight talk and snubbing those that deserve nothing better.

Says the entire MSM, CP. And don’t even get me started that it “doesn’t count for anything.” You know better.

gryphon202 on November 16, 2007 at 4:24 PM

Well, having read a few of the comments, I must admit I like the “act like Teddy Roosevelt” the best. I have long advocated for knock down drag out fights with my liberal adversaries and should do no less on this topic, if I’m to be consistent.

I hope that that wasn’t intended as an implication that I’d listened to the Whiner, and simply reiterated what he’d said. I don’t watch, or listen to, the Whiner. Neither do I listen to Limbaugh, or O’Reilly, et al.

My post concerned the first thing that came into my mind. The visualization of Gore and his large, loud mouth, bellowing about the betrayal.

OhEssYouCowboys on November 16, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Says the entire MSM, CP. And don’t even get me started that it “doesn’t count for anything.” You know better.

gryphon202 on November 16, 2007 at 4:24 PM

Do I? I’m serious. What’s the big deal if the President doesn’t pose for five minutes to get his picture taken? The MSM is gonna rip him no matter what. Gore doesn’t show Bush any respect and what has he done for world peace? Can’t the president skip a few things? I’m sick of soundbite/photo-op/PC capitulations and it would be refreshing to have a leader who says “No, I’m not going to declare national ethno-centric quilt-making day or whatever-the-hell because it’s stupid.”

It’s not Bush who’s at fault. If Gore had any balls he’d have stayed away as a protest, or out of shame. He is despicable.

JiangxiDad on November 16, 2007 at 4:40 PM

The way I see it, “Class” will out. George has it. In spades. It would have NEVER happened if it was the other way around. This was the right thing for GW to do.

I’m plenty damn glad we’ve got him now and had him over the years.

You make a valid point, CP, but in the great big scheme of things, it’s President Bush’s policy capitulations that bother me far more (and are the reason I held my nose when I voted in 2004) than making nicey-nice with some bloated has-been liberal nutjob.

If we’re going to crusade on Bush’s shortcomings, let’s pick our battles.

gryphon202 on November 16, 2007 at 4:43 PM

I would have a poster of South Park showing him flying around in his cape looking for Manbearpig, hanging from the office wall when he arrives if I were prez.

Which is precisely why I wouldn’t shake his hand. Especially after he’d [in essence] accused me of sending troops to their deaths – by BETRAYING! them. I don’t shake hands with that kind of bovine excrement. Unless, like I said, the accusation was true.

He didn’t shake hands with Gore. He shook hands with the Nobel Prize winner– whomever that turns out to be. I know it’s a tainted prize, I know it was politically awarded, everyone does. Everyone knows that Gore behaved abominably toward Bush. Everyone knows this has a foul smell about it. And yet, Bush behaved beautifully, with grace, and taught me a lot. Bush was Buddha-like– he acknowledged even a worm. I am proud of him.

JiangxiDad on November 16, 2007 at 4:53 PM

It’s called grace. Unmerited favor.

Amen. What’s worse is this climate change nonsense isn’t simply stupid. It’s also incredibly dangerous and irresponsible.

Bush didn’t do either one, because it doesn’t happen until 26th. (The front page photo is from at least seven years ago–hint: how young Bush looks and how relatively svelte Gore looks.)

I could not agree more. What ever happened to principles.

When did bending over and taking it become “gracious” or having “class”.

Making nice and doing photo ops with the enemy is nothing more than rewarding your enemy with a press conference. I am sick and tired of RHINOS. This is why we are becoming a Socialist country by incremental progression.

A true leader does not give in, let alone give him a photo op.

Man Made Global Warming is a fraud.I see no reason to allow the purveyor of the hoax to be allowed a handshaking ceremony in the oval office along with the rest of the crooks from the United Nations.

Pres. Bush is being… well…. presidential. What would you have him do? Act like Gore?

MNDavenotPC on November 16, 2007 at 3:44 PM

Exactly. Greeting Nobel Prize winners (however undeserving) is just part of Presidential protocol.

And its utterly predictable that Bush will manage to be gracious and presidential … while Gore will wind up being shrill and catty.

Although you know Dubya’s gonna be chuckling inside when ManBearPig starts slobbering with envy.

Poor Algore. He’s a no-win situation. If he speaks a few inconvenient lies to power, he’ll look like the fool he is. If he doesn’t – the moonbatatorium will howl with anger.

All Bush has to do is act like a gentleman. After all, he is the President. No matter what, Algore looks pale (and weak and flabby) standing next to him.

Then again, if I don’t see at least one smirk and a wink out of the Prez during this ridiculous photo op, I’ll be very disappointed …

It must really suck to be a liberal. They always manage to find ways to make everything suck for themselves.

Making nice and doing photo ops with the enemy is nothing more than rewarding your enemy with a press conference.

The “enemy?”

Sigh. Here’s a hint, friend: when your post could have been written – word for word – at DemocraticUnderground … you might want to rethink your post. And they think exactly like that.

Al Gore and his followers are not enemies – and making that statement is as childish and foolish as those who call the President “Hitler” or who call America “the world’s biggest terrorist.” Yeah. It’s really that misguided.

ManBearPig and his minions are simply immature, misguided Americans … and its our job to educate them. To teach them. To earn their trust and their votes.

The only guaranteed way to make sure other Americans don’t listen to you is to call them the “enemy.” That very same mistake is what earned moonbats their reputation and what keeps them from winning elections they should win.

With that kind of rhetoric, we become exactly what they are. No difference at all.

I know exactly who my enemy is. So should all Americans. He isn’t really that hard to spot. I’d kill my enemy, if I coud. And he’s a lot scarier than a Tennessee shyster with a pot belly and a Bell Meade mansion with an oversized carbon footprint.

And not one word of the above will get through, will it?

Nope. Never does. It doesn’t get through to the folks on the other side who call you their “enemy,” either.

And those of us with functioning brains, who manage to see the world as a little more interesting than black and white and red and blue, are left to wonder how the two sides are different, if they’re both “enemies” of other Americans.

Sigh. Thank God its Friday. I hope the babe who hands me my beer isn’t one of the “enemy.”

Professor Blather on November 16, 2007 at 5:58 PM

Pam on November 16, 2007 at 8:22 PM

Professor Blather on November 16, 2007 at 5:58 PM

I have no intention of rephrasing my post to satisfy your sensibilities or to be Politically Correct.

Your logic from on high is precisely why the Republican party is falling apart in this election and losing the culture battle. For too long, the country club republicans have tried to be civil with people that have no intention of playing nice.

We are looking at $100 per barrel oil and Nationalized Health Care because the RNC has played nice. Al Gore and his minions have successfully played the RNC for fools.

George Bush is not running for office and should not give Al Gore the opportunity to legitimize his Nobel Prize.

Calling me names like a moonbat, childish, and having the lack of a functioning brain is beneath you.(Maybe not)

Al Gore is the enemy IMHO and I will not stoop to returning the insults that you hurled at me.
