Open thread: The “ain’t so bad, champ” debate! Update: Kucinich’s “Hello?” added

8 p.m. on CNN. With the Glacier suddenly looking vulnerable, it’s Obama’s chance to play Rocky to her Clubber Lang. Will he swing away? They don’t call him Obambi for nothing. An exciting subplot for you: Given her delightful idiocy about immigration, will the Messiah and Silky tack right and start talking up border enforcement? Somewhere Tancelot smiles, and nods. Knowingly. Oh, so knowingly.
While we wait, chew on this little bulletin from across the aisle, as I suspect you’ll be hearing more about it tomorrow. Did Mitt really flake out of a state-party-sponsored debate in Iowa, of all places? That looks shockingly weak in light of Huckabee’s recent gains and reputation as a superior debater, as though Mitt can’t bear to face him now with the stakes raised. If I were Huck’s campaign manager I’d be pounding that drum tomorrow to any media outlet that would have me.
Have a blast in the comments. I’ll be off doing something more edifying, like staring at a wall. E-mail tips on clipworthy moments are, as always, dearly appreciated.
Update (bp): I’m convinced that the only reason Dennis Kucinich runs for president is for the debates, because they offer moments when millions of people who would otherwise ignore him are forced to listen to him. Here’s his reaction to one moment when he didn’t even get that satisfaction.
Update (Bryan): My scorecard:
Hillary won by not losing. No gaffes, few cackles, and a one-word answer to the licenses question.
Obama and Edwards failed, for different reasons. Obama came across as too inexperienced and not in command of the facts. Saying only that there has been progress in Iraq “in some neighborhoods” reveals how ill-informed he is. Al-Anbar is something like a third of Iraq. Diyala is a major province. Even Adamiyah, the huge east Baghdad enclave, is quieter these days. Those aren’t neighborhoods, Senator Obama, they’re vast parts of the country where most of the violence in Iraq occurred before the surge. Edwards just came off as over the top. His nutroots act is an act, for the most part, and he doesn’t seem to know when to dial it down.
Biden is good, sane, and grown up. He’s wrong about quite a few things, but at least he’s credible. Ditto for Dodd, which is why the two cancel each other out. Richardson and Kucinich are the fringe candidates, and ought to drop out. They add some comic relief but no serious person takes either one seriously as presidential material. Richardson has given away all the credibility that his resume says should be his. Coin toss on whether Biden or Dodd joins Richardson and Kucinich in dropping out.

Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 7:53 PM
Ha, and second.
Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 7:57 PM
Let the idiocy begin.
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:00 PM
Vizzini, we all really envy you. “Oh, if only I could be first,” we say to ourselves. “If only I could be as talented and accomplished as Vizzini.”
Gawd.
Anyway, it should be a interesting debate. Hillary will be desperate to avoid providing any more glue for the flip-flop label. The others will be desperate to hammer her for flip-flopping and anything else they can come up with.
I won’t be watching, but I look forward to the highlight clips.
Splashman on November 15, 2007 at 8:01 PM
Don’t forget I was second, too, Splashman.
Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 8:02 PM
Gonna be very interested to see how the media handles Hillary this time. Are we going to see acquiescence or assertion? Interesting sub-story there.
Spirit of 1776 on November 15, 2007 at 8:02 PM
WTF is this, the World Series?
How totally inane.
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:03 PM
Ha, I wish they were doing this analysis over the loud speakers.
Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 8:05 PM

Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 8:10 PM
Hillary’s already off-topic on the FIRST QUESTION.
Just answer it, Hill…sheez. Wolf already needs to step in and get her back on track.
Sir Loin on November 15, 2007 at 8:10 PM
I think Obama overdid his eyebrow pencil.
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:11 PM
Has Obama lost weight?
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:11 PM
Obama had a chance to hit Hillary and didn’t.
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:13 PM
NEW DRINKING GAME
Hillary’s “been fighting” for everything. I think she’s said “I’ve been fighing for…” at least 5 or 6 times already. Bottoms up!
Sir Loin on November 15, 2007 at 8:13 PM
Silky is sure looking spackled & smooth. Awesome.
Sir Loin on November 15, 2007 at 8:15 PM
This does have the air of a free-for-all prizefight. Wolf is a wussy referee.
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:15 PM
gee a heckler? cool
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Wolf stands up for a straight answer, wow a pig just flew by my house!
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:31 PM
Obama keeps stuttering and slurring his speech for some reason; he is normally the best Democrat speaker out there… He’s not getting his point out there…
IntheNet on November 15, 2007 at 8:31 PM
It Boooosssshes fault!
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:31 PM
there are no illegal human beings – the kook,
wow
cougfan on November 15, 2007 at 8:32 PM
Bogus statistics.
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:33 PM
In Las Vegas, about 10 miles from where these traitors are standing, new construction sites are being raided and shut down because they are rife with illegals doing the jobs that Americans wont do.
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:33 PM
There are no illegal ALIENS….Dennis, could you please clarify?
LordMaximus on November 15, 2007 at 8:35 PM
Krazee Kucinich says no humans are illegal, but we need immigration reform to make them LEGAL.
Hey loon! Your UFO awaits!
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:37 PM
“A Kucinich administration would be a worker’s White House.” Truest thing I heard all day, comrade.
Wineaholic on November 15, 2007 at 8:38 PM
It takes a team. Blech!
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:39 PM
And exactly who would be left working to pay for that Richardson?
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 8:39 PM
New bumper sticker floating around:
(Next to a photo of Hillary) Life’s a b*tch, why elect one?
Zorro on November 15, 2007 at 8:40 PM
Somewhere in my evil little mind, I wish Obama would look over at Cankles and ask her…
“Are you crying? There’s no crying in politics!”
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:41 PM
Joe’s wife got smarts. Maybe she should be running.
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 8:41 PM
Hey Richardson, why don’t you just pay teachers $100,000 a year, why stop at a minimum wage of $40,000.
How do you pay for it? What a friggin moron.
Typical lib, throwing money at a problem.
I can’t believe we are listening to PRESIDENTIAL candidates. It sounds more like a sixth grade debate.
fogw on November 15, 2007 at 8:42 PM
That’s a great idea.
infidel4life on November 15, 2007 at 8:42 PM
Half the time Biden sounds rational, the rest of the time I can’t tell the difference between him and Kucinich.
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:42 PM
Do these morons realize merit pay does not exist in a union?
What it is is payment to buddies and ass kissers.
Idiots.
They’ve never worked in a union environment. It sucks.
benrand on November 15, 2007 at 8:42 PM
Well Biden’s got my vote :)
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:45 PM
I’ve worked for, and know of many companies that have been brought down because of ‘fair wages’.
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 8:45 PM
It’s not POCKistan.
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 8:46 PM
Human rights are more important than security?
Bwahahahahaha!!! The Taliban stands and CHEERS. They get to kill at will while Richardson screams “Human Rights!”.
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:46 PM
I can’t believe any of these Democrats on stage are running for the highest office in the land; I could find much smarter folks down at the lottery line at our 7 Eleven! Sad…
IntheNet on November 15, 2007 at 8:46 PM
Richardson doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:46 PM
Say goodnight Bill.
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 8:48 PM
Edwards is wearing a LifeSaver on his lapel…
IntheNet on November 15, 2007 at 8:48 PM
Anti-American sentiment is our fault. Riiiiight Obama, riiiight.
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:49 PM
I keep expecting Obama to flap his ears and fly.
Jay on November 15, 2007 at 8:50 PM
I can’t stand Dodd, but he’s right. Security is most important. Just look at Maslow hierarchy.
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:51 PM
I’ve learned something tonight. Pakistan’s human rights are more important than American security. We may all die from risen or atomic poisoning but Pakastanis will have free elections and democracy. My goodness.
Griz on November 15, 2007 at 8:52 PM
It’s Boooossshes fault!
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:52 PM
Does anybody know if this being streamed? I don’t see it at cnn.com. :(
Tuning Spork on November 15, 2007 at 8:53 PM
This debate is getting less and less interesting. I wanna see more sparks.
Jay on November 15, 2007 at 8:53 PM
Did the little guy say something?
infidel on November 15, 2007 at 8:53 PM
She is not all that smart, it’s plainly obvious.
benrand on November 15, 2007 at 8:54 PM
The surge is not working.
Jeeze this people are stooooopid!
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 8:54 PM
Did Richardson just fall back on Murtha’s batty line about the right to kill Americans poll?
RW_theoriginal on November 15, 2007 at 8:55 PM
Hillary is not Bill
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:55 PM
How do I vote Bill and the little guy off the island?
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 8:55 PM
Causalities dropping in Iraq, maybe surge etc. working/worked, how do you explain it Gov. Richardson?
“We shouldn’t be talking about numbers. Oh, and two Americans died today, BTW.”
Wineaholic on November 15, 2007 at 8:55 PM
Yea, right, the Iraqis really want a Sunni army from Saudi Arabia to take over security….
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 8:56 PM
Richardson: “Let’s not talk about body counts”
then the goof ball goes on and cites body counts?
Ummmmmm….OK?
186k on November 15, 2007 at 8:56 PM
Did Richardson just say that we should not talk about bodycounts and then proceed to cite a bodycount????
rw on November 15, 2007 at 8:56 PM
Obama the only one who makes an attempt to credit the troops with the surge.
186k on November 15, 2007 at 8:58 PM
Dammit, everything is a damned DISASTER!!!
benrand on November 15, 2007 at 9:01 PM
And Richardson is the first one I’ve heard blame Bush AND Congress for the failure for immigration reform.
ctmom on November 15, 2007 at 9:02 PM
It was right before it was wrong.
oakpack on November 15, 2007 at 9:02 PM
In case you are not aware, Yucca Mountain is a proposed nuke dump repository that has been a huge issue in las vegas politics. Harry Reid cut his teeth on iy. The issue is if the mountian will survive earthquakes etc and keep the containers safe. ALSO, neveada citizens do not want trucks and trains laden with nuke waste barreling through it’s communities.
csdeven on November 15, 2007 at 9:02 PM
Silky chanelling Teddy Roosevelt.

BillLalor on November 15, 2007 at 9:03 PM
A trade time-out? Now that’s a dumb idea!
bnelson44 on November 15, 2007 at 9:04 PM
TRADE TIME OUT!!!
I AM HILLARY! AND I CALLED TIME OUT!
SO TIME OUT DAMMIT!!!
benrand on November 15, 2007 at 9:04 PM
Everyone of these candidates is in denial, completely ignoring the substanital and documented progress made on the ground in Iraq as a result of the surge.
I often wonder if they realize how they are insulting the very troops they claim to support when they say nothing’s changed, there is no hope for change and the surge is a failure.
These surrender monkeys are a disgrace !! They criticize and give absolutely no credit to our warrriors on the front lines.
None deserve to be even considered for the office of president.
