Open thread: The “ain’t so bad, champ” debate! Update: Kucinich’s “Hello?” added

8 p.m. on CNN. With the Glacier suddenly looking vulnerable, it’s Obama’s chance to play Rocky to her Clubber Lang. Will he swing away? They don’t call him Obambi for nothing. An exciting subplot for you: Given her delightful idiocy about immigration, will the Messiah and Silky tack right and start talking up border enforcement? Somewhere Tancelot smiles, and nods. Knowingly. Oh, so knowingly.

While we wait, chew on this little bulletin from across the aisle, as I suspect you’ll be hearing more about it tomorrow. Did Mitt really flake out of a state-party-sponsored debate in Iowa, of all places? That looks shockingly weak in light of Huckabee’s recent gains and reputation as a superior debater, as though Mitt can’t bear to face him now with the stakes raised. If I were Huck’s campaign manager I’d be pounding that drum tomorrow to any media outlet that would have me.

Have a blast in the comments. I’ll be off doing something more edifying, like staring at a wall. E-mail tips on clipworthy moments are, as always, dearly appreciated.

Update (bp): I’m convinced that the only reason Dennis Kucinich runs for president is for the debates, because they offer moments when millions of people who would otherwise ignore him are forced to listen to him. Here’s his reaction to one moment when he didn’t even get that satisfaction.

Update (Bryan): My scorecard:
Hillary won by not losing. No gaffes, few cackles, and a one-word answer to the licenses question.
Obama and Edwards failed, for different reasons. Obama came across as too inexperienced and not in command of the facts. Saying only that there has been progress in Iraq “in some neighborhoods” reveals how ill-informed he is. Al-Anbar is something like a third of Iraq. Diyala is a major province. Even Adamiyah, the huge east Baghdad enclave, is quieter these days. Those aren’t neighborhoods, Senator Obama, they’re vast parts of the country where most of the violence in Iraq occurred before the surge. Edwards just came off as over the top. His nutroots act is an act, for the most part, and he doesn’t seem to know when to dial it down.
Biden is good, sane, and grown up. He’s wrong about quite a few things, but at least he’s credible. Ditto for Dodd, which is why the two cancel each other out. Richardson and Kucinich are the fringe candidates, and ought to drop out. They add some comic relief but no serious person takes either one seriously as presidential material. Richardson has given away all the credibility that his resume says should be his. Coin toss on whether Biden or Dodd joins Richardson and Kucinich in dropping out.

Did Biden say re: the issue of abortion he’d appoint a SCOTUS justice based on their view of privacy in Section 5 of the 14th Amendment? I could have heard him wrong, but this is Section 5…

Section. 5. The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

Kucinich is the crazy kid in kindergarten who eats his crayons.

Obama keeps stuttering and slurring his speech for some reason; he is normally the best Democrat speaker out there… He’s not getting his point out there…

He received his manila envelope this afternoon from the hilary for pres campaign. It contains the background check he doesn’t want his wife to see.

How can any of these democrats claim to be Americans when 90% of what they stand for is un-American?

Thank you. They hate our representative form of government, they hate our economic system, they think our military is made up of psychopaths, they think minorities are helpless and can only survive with government help, they think successful Americans must have done it illegally or just got lucky, etc., etc.,etc.,…..

Yet we have to say they are patriotic? Another word that the left has twisted so badly it no longer has any meaning.

Bah I can’t believe I missed south park for that debate

Keli on November 15, 2007 at 10:40 PM

I think Biden won the debate. He talked common sense instead of trying to b.s. people. Hillary lost points because people don’t want to hear about how she spent 35 years doing yada, yada, yada. Obama lost points because he just talks for the sake of talking without answering the questions.

P.S. Campbell Brown is hot :0)

SoulGlo on November 15, 2007 at 10:53 PM

I think Biden and Dodd did the best. They each sounded Presidential. Does it not look like Hillary has ping pong balls in her cheeks?? They cannot be real cheeks! Oops,, I noticed her appearance! She wavered on NAFTA and did not answer the question. If she had been pressed a little more I think she would have melted right there. You could tell she did not want to answer and she began to tumble. If the commentator has asked one more time “I am sorry, so it was a mistake or it was not a mistake?” I really think that is all it would have taken. If she would have tumbled even a little more there that early in the debate it would not have been good. CNN helped her. She was usually the last one to answer a question. For her, this was better and less risky than being the first to be asked. This gave her more time to pick and choose who had the best answer and prevented others from attacking her as easily. I love her response that she would not play the gender card,, and then went on to play the gender card. Puke! I really don’t think this helped her except with people that would have voted for her anyway. And besides,, there are more debates to come.

I don’t believe in accidents when it comes to democrat event photography, and I’ll bet I’m not the only one who sees a similarity between the posing of that caption photo and Mt Rushmore.

Much more interesting to me than talking about the lie/pander-fest they called a debate.
