John Fund: Are you ready for President Dobbs?
posted at 4:32 pm on November 15, 2007 by Allahpundit
Not the first name I’d think of if asked which cable news anchor was most likely to start believing his own BS, but no one makes a show of his populism as much as Dobbs does so it’s not surprising, I guess. His worldview imagines a middle class perpetually under siege from both illegals and corporations, a great voiceless mass in need of a spokesman who understands their hopes and fears but forced to settle for posers and charlatans.
Who will emerge to speak for They Who Cannot Speak? Who, I ask you?
After months of telling reporters that he “absolutely” would not consider leaving his highly-rated CNN show in which he crusades against free trade and illegal immigration, Mr. Dobbs posted a commentary on his Web site last week predicting a surprise new presidential candidate in 2008. The mystery candidate is an “independent populist . . . who understands the genius of this country lies in the hearts and minds of its people and not in the prerogatives and power of its elites.”
Friends of Mr. Dobbs say he is seriously contemplating a race for the first time, although it’s still unlikely. They spin a scenario under which the acerbic commentator would parachute into the race if Michael Bloomberg, the New York billionaire and favorite of East Coast elites, enters the field as an independent. With Hillary Clinton continuing to score badly in polls in the categories of honesty and integrity, and with the public’s many doubts about Rudy Giuliani and other GOP contenders, Mr. Bloomberg may well see an opportunity to roil the political waters by entering the race late. If so, Mr. Dobbs then sees a niche for a “fourth-party” candidate who could paint the three other contenders as completely out of touch.
Here’s the messianic web commentary to which Fund refers. I’m not sure why he needs Bloomberg in the race to do this unless he figures his absolute ceiling is about 25-30% and needs the rest of the electorate to split three ways. I’d say his ceiling is closer to 2% but then he’s the millionaire and I’m the guy without an iPhone. I’m guessing he’d hurt Rudy more than Hillary since (a) his signature issue is border enforcement and that speaks more to conservatives than to liberals and (b) Rudy’s counting on Hillary-hating centrist independents to break for him, a plan that would obviously be foiled to some extent if Dobbs is available as a protest vote. (But why would those independents break for Dobbs over Bloomberg? Immigration again?)
I hope he does get in, not only because it would force even more attention towards the borders but because the closer we get to the election, the warmer I am to the idea of an anarchic three-, four-, or even five-party race. The GOP is as weak as it will (hopefully) be for years to come. If ever there was a time to embrace the free-for-all concept and let the chips fall where they may, this is it. And just think how giddy it would make the North American Union windmill-tilters.
Here you go, Hillary. Something for your first attack ad.

I didn’t mean to suggest it was crazy, just to emphasize the siege mentality.

Feel the squeeze, baby! Caught between “The Man” and macho.
On the other hand, how much worse could he be than most of the other candidates?
Scotsman on November 15, 2007 at 4:43 PM
Oh man, I so want this to happen… and as my favorite doctor once said, “Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together – mass hysteria!”
Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 4:46 PM
It would be pandermonium….not to be confused with pandamonium, the sounds a panda makes in Gutfeld’s activity pit.

If you’re thinking Bill O, he considered doing it in 2004 as an Independent. I’ll have to see if I can find that article.
Bad Candy on November 15, 2007 at 4:59 PM
I could see him peeling off 3-5%, mostly lower-class white Democrats, who feel the Republicans don’t represent them since they are the party of the rich. Would also corner the Pat Buchanan voting bloc (America first voters), and there are quite a few of them out there if anyone can remember Buchanan’s showing in NH against Bush (“Lock and Load!”).

Bill O could never run. Too many falafels in his closet.
RW Wacko on November 15, 2007 at 5:01 PM
Random thought, but has there been any thought to adding a chat widget to Hot Air?
Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 5:03 PM
DO NOT WANT!
Kensington on November 15, 2007 at 5:04 PM
That’d be kinda cool.
RW Wacko on November 15, 2007 at 5:05 PM
Oh good lord. Do people actually watch Lou Dobbs’s show?
CP on November 15, 2007 at 5:08 PM
Here’s one. Here’s another. It would make conversing about topics a lot easier, and the thread could be kept for those who can pop in but can’t stick around.
Vizzini on November 15, 2007 at 5:09 PM
Run Dobbs Run!
Lou would get the Democrat voters who want illegals deported (there are lots) all riled up and when HillBill gets nominated they’ll vote for a Republican.
Speakup on November 15, 2007 at 5:11 PM
Warming to Ron Paul are we?
Maybe Ron & Lou could be running mates.
Speakup on November 15, 2007 at 5:14 PM
Dobbs did expose and kill the Dubai Ports deal.
BL@KBIRD on November 15, 2007 at 5:21 PM
Stop it AP. You’re making me P my pants. Well, I guess it’s better than you makin’ me feel funny in the pants.
ulyses on November 15, 2007 at 5:22 PM
Are we talking Lou, or “Bob”?
Farmer_Joe on November 15, 2007 at 5:36 PM
Considering all the cross-party issues coming up, the more independents I see rising, the better. There’s so much discontent on both sides of the field, that I think more choices would only make the election more interesting.
MadisonConservative on November 15, 2007 at 5:53 PM
Do you really yhink he is that stupid ? I would rather expect that from one the Hollywood crowd (Penn ??? etc.).
SIJ6141 on November 15, 2007 at 5:58 PM
Lou Dobbs
He’s the man
If anyone can fix things
He can
MB4 on November 15, 2007 at 7:39 PM
Dobbs would do quite well with Reagan Democrats.
MB4 on November 15, 2007 at 7:41 PM
I would rather see Dobbs/Franks
MB4 on November 15, 2007 at 7:43 PM

Speakup on November 15, 2007 at 11:45 PM
I figured you were joking, but I wasn’t.
MB4 on November 16, 2007 at 12:56 AM
IN case you missed it, the Dubai Ports deal was designed by the administration – in agreement with Dubai – to put U.S. intelligence officers into every port.
That fact was never openly discussed for obvious reasons. It was a huge loss for U.S. intelligence
jake-the-goose on November 16, 2007 at 8:32 AM
I can remember when Lou Dobbs was pro-business, and pro-American.
The man truly has become HOWARD BEALE.
I do love that fact that every week his hair color changes. Red, then blond, then gray, then red again.
