Political genius: Spitzer’s re-elect number drops to 25%

posted at 2:00 pm on November 13, 2007 by Bryan

It’s a good thing for NY Gov Eliot Spitzer that he’s less than a year into his term. He has three years to dig himself out of the Troopergate and licenses-for-illegals chasm that usually takes at least a term and a half to carve out. The latter has pushed his popularity down to Washington levels. Almost. But he can get there if he just tries a little harder. Whaddya say, Eliot?

Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to provide illegal immigrants with driver’s licenses has sunk his favorability rating to an all-time low of 41 percent, and has left only 25 percent of voters planning to re-elect him, according to a poll the Siena Research Institute released Tuesday.

Forty-six percent had an unfavorable opinion of Spitzer, and 49 percent said they would “prefer someone else” as the next governor. Last month, 54 percent of voters had a favorable opinion of the governor.

“Eliot Spitzer’s standing with voters has fallen faster and further than any politician in recent New York history,” Siena spokesman Steven Greenberg said in a written statement. “Everything may not have changed on day one but from the voters’ perspective, everything about Governor Spitzer changed in year one.”

Spitzer swept to office last November with nearly 70 percent of the vote, carried largely by his reputation as a reformer and his campaign pledge to change everything starting on “Day One.”

Considering that Spitzer won with 70% of the vote in November, to be at 41% now and with a 25% re-elect, he’s in freefall.

Update (AP): What a sweet little gift to Republicans. A hugely popular AG swept into office as governor in one of America’s bluest states a year before the presidential election — and he implodes over one of the GOP’s core issues? We shouldn’t have to worry about the amnesty shills feeling too frisky for another few years after this.

He’ll always have a job at the DMV. Licenses for illegals is job security. Lots of business, ya know.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer steamroller.

I’ll bet he got a “talkin’ to” from Schumer et al. Lay off. Drop it. This is gonna kill the party.

Hah.

Doesn’t really matter. He has a few more years to give away free stuff and get back in the good graces of all the Dem voters that are destined to vote for him again. NY is like Maryland in that there will be more dead people from the urban areas voting for him than live Rebuplicans voting against him in the rest of the state.

This is NY, the place that chose Hillary. Spitzer will get re-elected, or become part of Hillary’s administration if she wins. We’re Louisiana, up north.

lol Outstanding ;-)

He needs to pick on Martha Stewart again so peoples savings will tank and hundreds of jobs lost, but he will take the wicked Martha off the streets.

I’m really enjoying this.

Why? With numbers like his, he could be Speaker, or President.

Illegal aliens (I prefer to call it “colonization” after the infamous “Wherever there is a Mexican, there is Mexico”) is NOT one of the GOP’s core issues.

It’s one of the GOP’s voting base’s core issues.

Huge difference. Hence: “comprehensive immigration reform”.

That very phrase makes me want to vomit blood.

Gold.

In the end, there will still probably be drivers licenses for illegals. Then they can show up at the polls to re-elect the governor with their new cards.

Recall, recall, recall.

As stated before this same issue helped bring down Gray Davis in California.

Amen.

The Democrat candidates for President just need to keep their “comprehensive” rhetoric in full swing. If so it is a blowout come November.

I hope GOP candidates are smart enough to capitalize on this issue and ride it to victory, and then actually DO SOMETHING about it.

Watch the Heath Schuler bill for a barometer. It has at least 90 bipartisan co-sponsors for an enforcement only bill.

What a contrast with Bush/Kennedy/Reid/Pelosi shamnesty. Shows how out-of-touch with the voters they are.

If the Schuler bill passes this session, will all Democrat presidential candidates then take credit for it and one of them weasel his/her way to victory???

Great news for Hillary. Now she finally can answer Russert’s question.

And what’s going on with Drudge and Hillary? I thought one of her people had Drudge in her pocket. Now its all Hillary all the time.

All of a sudden the statement “George Pataki….. Stalwart Knight of good Governing” doesn’t seem far fetched or illogical.

Joey1974 on November 13, 2007 at 3:40 PM

Yeah, it’d be nice if the Republicans would start getting aggressive about this. Or anything for that matter.

Iblis on November 13, 2007 at 3:52 PM

Sadly, it does not matter how far Spitzer falls in the polls. He has the New York Times to champion him. It should have been obvious before the last election that Spitzer, who has the arrogance of a man who inherited millions of dollars from daddy, was a bully who always has to have his way. It should have been obvious that he was a man who has been coddled since he was in the crib and does not how to compromise or to share. Yet the New York Times and the network news programs portrayed him as a selfless Robin Hood, who alone uncovers fraud and abuse. Never mind that he lost the one jury trial that he did. And when it is time for reelection, the Republicans will nominate a weakling in the Rick Lazio mode and the New York Times will use all of its resources to reelect Spitzer.

As stated before this same issue helped bring down Gray Davis in California.

William, the illegal immigration issue was the least of Gay Davis’ worries. He freaked out over electricity shortages and plunged into predatory power contracts. In short, Tinkerbelle took a state with a budget surplus and gave California a debt of over $30 billion. There are limits to what even California will put up with.

I think Spitzer is a political lowlife and a fraud. The sooner he is out of office the better. The man has no principles.

As a New Yorker when I refer to him as Governor Spit, it’s because I am contracting his name in the interests of space economy, not because of his inane, stupid, ridiculous, ill-timed, ill-considered, dangerous, egregious, idiotic, imbecilic, catastrophic decision. Here’s mud in your eye, Governor Spit.

Doubt it will pass. All the ‘crats seem to care about is getting illegals licenses so they can vote.

It might make me sound like I have a tinfoil hat, especially since Bush has pushed for this so hard but….

I’ve been wondering if Rove may have suggested this issue as bait for the ‘crats. Get them to go overboard on amnesty for illegals in order to get the middle and the base fired up to vote against the ‘crats.

When the debate first started, it was mostly Republicans pushing this and the ‘crats staying in the tall grass watching. When it was first rejected, the ‘crats came out more and more for it, and now they are openly pushing for it, and showing their constituents what they truly support.

More cities, states or other politicians like Spitzer joined in and are now properly exposed.

As Rush says, put a bag of poo in front of them and they step in it every time.
