AP: Spitzer abandons license plan for illegals; Update: Triumphant humpbot video added!

posted at 9:49 pm on November 13, 2007 by Allahpundit

Smells like … victory.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has decided to abandon a plan to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, officials familiar with the decision told The Associated Press Tuesday night…

The governor’s office signaled to New York lawmakers Tuesday that Spitzer will say at the meeting that he is shelving the plan and that immigration is a federal issue to be handled by Washington, according to congressional aides who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.

Last month, Spitzer sought to salvage the license effort by striking a deal with the Department of Homeland Security to create three distinct types of state driver’s licenses: one “enhanced” that will be as secure as a passport; a second-tier license good for boarding airplanes; and a third marked not valid for federal purposes that would be available to illegal immigrants and others…

About 70 percent of New Yorkers oppose the license plan, according to a Siena College poll of 625 registered state voters released Tuesday. The poll, conducted Nov. 5-8, had a sampling margin of 3.9 percentage points.

70 percent in a state bluer than the oceans. I can’t wait to see what this chastening does to the Democrats’ plank on amnesty during the campaign. Thanks, Spitz!

I feel the sudden urge to tango. Join me.

Update: Beset on all sides: “[H]e came to believe the proposal would ultimately be blocked, he said, either by legal challenges, a vote by the Legislature to deny funding for the Department of Motor Vehicles or a refusal by upstate county clerks to carry it.”

Update: I concur with commenter Number 2. This calls for a cameo appearance by His Majesty.

Update (Bryan): If it weren’t already dead, this kills off Bill Richardson’s chances of winning the Dem nomination. As governor of New Mexico, he signed a law that allows illegals to obtain drivers licenses.

Update: Fools rush in where New Yorkers fear to tread.

She’s got to get some lip-biting or some other shtick if she’s going try giving BS answers like that. Her trademark approach isn’t going to work anymore. A mysterious death of Russert is going to raise more eyebrows than Hsu nearly did.

I think this warrants the humping robot. Don’t you?

She is just in the “winning the primary” mode, I wonder what she’ll do to when the General.

TheSitRep on November 13, 2007 at 10:06 PM

Methinks those cratering poll numbers plus pressure from Team Pantsuit forced his hand.

JammieWearingFool on November 13, 2007 at 10:07 PM

you don’t need to see the most recent poll to understand that this is an issue that has touched a nerve in the public and we’re trying to address that in a thoughtful, modulated way, and then we’ll see where we go.”

A 25% re-election approval for Mr. Spitzer…and he gets the message…plus a thret from Hillary. Imagine what this would have meant for her in the general.

came to believe the proposal would ultimately be blocked, he said, either by legal challenges, a vote by the Legislature to deny funding for the Department of Motor Vehicles or a refusal by upstate county clerks to carry it.”

Here’s the biggest irony – the Glacier wants it ‘disappeared’ for the primaries, so she can say she’s for “comprehensive anything and the Bushes didn’t pass it”, then in the general she’ll say to one set of the audience “I’m for strong security”, and the other “vote for me, because I’ll pass it first thing in office”. Puke!!!

Argentine tango! 300+ steps…

The humping robot has more innate sense than Herr Spitzer ever has.

Oh man that makes me laugh every time I see it!

Thank you Allah for the humping robot! Thank you Spitzer for failing so miserably to occasion it!

Next thing you know they’ll find Spitzer’s body in Fort Marcy Park with a pistol in his hand.

And to think? From what I’ve seen on the soma (TV) NY pretty much meant NYC – and all the liberal stuff that goes along with it.

BowHuntingTexas on November 13, 2007 at 10:23 PM

Wow, he actually abandoned it. But not because he decided the idea lacked merit. Not because he came to his senses and realized it was a bad idea. No. He abandoned it because he couldn’t win. That means it’ll be back in about 6 months. Just watch. He’ll figure out some new way to repackage it and sell it to the people of NYS…I only hope that 70% of them don’t suddenly become stupid in that time.

And yes, Humpbot rules.

DakRoland on November 13, 2007 at 10:27 PM

He’ll find a backdoor way to legitimize illegals.Wait and see.

I think you’re right, Maidee, the Dems are just too hot for adding lots of voters to their side anyhow ,anyway they can , laws of the Republic and the will of the people be damned.

Hillary reminds me of the “push-me, pull-you” from Dr Dolittle (the REAL one with Rex Harrison) except in her case there is a horses a$$ on both ends.

— Oh,it’s because she’s a woman,get over it.

—Ask Rosie to decepher it,re-arrange all the letters

are from China, now wait for the fumes to build and
if you don’t pass out,you should have your answer.

Ammiano said banking institutions in San Francisco have signaled their willingness to accept the municipal ID card for the purpose of setting up accounts. He noted that people without bank accounts are frequently more vulnerable to theft and robbery.

oh please give me a freaking break , the only ones being robbed are the people who have to pay the excessive property taxes so this city of just under 3/4 of a million people can have a 6 billion dollar budget . Is it wrong of me to hope my home town sinks into the ocean or AQ blows up a dirty bomb in it ???

Mojack420 on November 14, 2007 at 12:40 AM

Uh, yeah, that’d be over the top, Mojack. I know you’re disappointed, but the best thing to do is to take your tax dollars elsewhere. If you’re not a resident of that city, they don’t get your money. That’s the way I felt about living here in NYS. If that Licenses for Illegals thing got passed, I would have packed up my daughter and I and moved the very next day. I’ll be DAMNED if my tax dollars would ever go to that program. I’d rather live in a state that knows what the true value of citizenship is, and not try watering it down by giving just anyone IDs, Right and access to things natural and legal citizens of this country can’t get. And a 3-tiered license system? I call BS on that.

My point is, move your tax dollars elsewhere, and support the removal of federal funding for sanctuary cities. It should be beneath us to wish horrible things on these places like natural disasters or terrorist attacks. It sends the wrong message about who and what we are.

DakRoland on November 14, 2007 at 1:11 AM

Looks like Spitzer decided the latest polls were more important than his narcissistic legislation. The DailyKooks have been making a big deal about some of the recent losses of Republican seats to Democrats in various recent localized elections around the country, based on the Republicans running on a so-called “anti-immigrant” agenda. Now look what Spitzer went and did, he dun turned a blue state red.

That’s a solid victory there… but it ain’t over yet.

S.F. supervisors approve ID cards for residents

(11-13) 15:56 PST San Francisco – – The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to issue municipal identification cards to city residents – regardless of whether they are in the country legally – and to double the amount of public money available to candidates running for supervisor.

Supervisor Tom Ammiano, who authored the ID card legislation, said the program is a smart public safety measure because it would make residents living on the social margins of San Francisco more likely to seek the help of police and could give them more access to banking services.

It’s like the plague.

I’d be willing to put money on a bet that he did this out of fear of an Impeachment and possible State and/or Federal Prison time.

Beset on all sides: “[H]e came to believe the proposal would ultimately be blocked, he said, either by legal challenges, a vote by the Legislature to deny funding for the Department of Motor Vehicles or a refusal by upstate county clerks to carry it.”

Yeah 70% of the public opposed, the lawyers warming up in the wings, the county clerks in revolt, the legislature up in arms, Hillary looking like a fool……..

and Spitzer “came to believe?” Only a smarmy weasle like Spitzer can issue a press release that makes it sound as if his decision to scurry back under the rock was a Solomon-like solution. What is it you call bastard idiots?

highhopes on November 14, 2007 at 8:14 AM

“smarmy weasel”

Well said.

LtE126 on November 14, 2007 at 9:50 AM

Glad to see it, but sadly it removes perhaps the only major issue Republicans (well, many Republicans) owned. I think a conservative might have won the White House on that issue alone. Immigration still is out there as an issue, but without the imminent threats such as Spitzer’s attempt to buy illegal aliens’’ votes, it may not be as hot a topic.

doufree on November 14, 2007 at 10:02 AM

And another thing, I think the result in New York, when compared to what SilverStar830 noted is going on in California shows that ,Gov. Ahnold not withstanding, New York has more red in it than California.

doufree on November 14, 2007 at 10:08 AM

The tentacles of the Klinton War Room rival those of the Rove Doomsday Machine.

Unfortunately for us, the former is real and deals with outing Republicans as well as eating their own, and the latter is but a wet dream made up by the Democrats, and according to them, attacks the opposition party only.

Let’s start a body count as of today. Body count meaning, an actual death or a promising career brought to a screeching halt to protect Queen Hillary.

1. Governor Spitzer …

“Immigration still is out there as an issue, but without the imminent threats such as Spitzer’s attempt to buy illegal aliens’’ votes, it may not be as hot a topic.”

A slick debate moderator (i.e. not Blitzer) could keep it a hot topic by asking Hill,

“You said in the previous debate that the Governor’s hand was forced because Bush failed to pass any meaningful legislation on immigration. That being said, do you agree with Governor Spitzer’s decision to abandon the drivers license for illegal immigrants? Doesn’t that mean Democrats have lost on this issue and the people, along with the Bush administration have won?”

Squirm time.

How has Bush won? It was his Homeland Security Department that greenlighted the licenses.

Valiant on November 14, 2007 at 11:01 AM

If you keep giving him publicity, isn’t there some risk that the Democrats will nominate the Robot? Seems like a perfect replacement for Bill Clinton…

Every component of this post is really stupid. What we need to do is have another “California gold rush” and have all the illegals flock to San Fransicko. It could be like the hippies in the 60′s. If those dumb $hits want to be suffocated by illegals, lets make it happen somehow.

saiga on November 14, 2007 at 11:47 AM

Bush wins whenever a Democrat, in this case two high ranking Democrats, make an @ss out of themselves.

A while back I mailed Bank of America about their their announced intent to get the illegal business and their ad spots hinting at such. I told them I would never use their bank.

Their reply was basically Don’t let the door hit you in the rear on the way out. Every time that door hits one of these goobers on the back swing I hear that robo music.

This is war. The fight is ugly but we are battle hardened and they are lazy pampered weasel plantation owners. Today is a good day for robots
