Zogby poll: All the stereotypes about conservatives are true

posted at 4:01 pm on November 12, 2007 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

NASCAR-lovin’, Fox-News-watchin’, classical-music-listenin’ wingnuts.

Wait. Classical?

People with a “red” entertainment preference think a lot of programming is in bad taste and doesn’t reflect their values. They don’t like a lot of things on TV, but their two favorite channels are Fox and Fox News. They like sports, especially football and auto racing, and they watch news and business programming. They don’t like most contemporary music and they don’t watch VH1 or MTV. They don’t much like late-night TV. They like to go to sporting events, and when they do go to the movies – which is rarely – they seek out action-adventure films. They’re not big book readers, but when they do read, they prefer non-fiction. When they read fiction, they often select mysteries and thrillers. They are more likely to listen to country and gospel than other people, but their favorite music is classical. They don’t play a lot of video games, but when they do, Madden NFL and Mario are their favorites. They think that fictional TV shows and movies are politically biased, and they believe they can predict a person’s politics if they know the person’s entertainment preferences.

In stark contrast to this lowly creature stands the enlightened moonbat, 20% of whom allegedly “very often” enjoy programming that runs counter to their personal philosophies compared to 11% of conservatives. Erm, which programming would that be, Zog? He gives the example of leftists listening to Rush Limbaugh but most of them are just groovin’ on hate the way Joel Surnow does when he reads Hot Air. Zogby wants you to believe the left is more open-minded and willing to consider their opponents’ position — the plain truth of which any of us who have dealt with the nutroots must surely admit — but a moron with a “V for Vendetta” poster on his wall tuning in to Hannity for the daily Two Hours’ Hate doesn’t quite fit that bill. Bonus points for Zog: He speculates that Air America might have failed in part because closed-minded conservatives weren’t willing to give it a chance, going so far as to list as one of his subheads, “The Real Reason Rush Limbaugh is Much More Popular than Air America.” I prefer the alternate explanation.

Here’s the raw data set; page one is the only one you need. Note how moderates line up with “reds” and “blues” on different questions. And note especially question 1. Good arguments can be made for both positions, as the “red” and “purple” columns indicate; judge for yourself what the spread in “blue” means.

Cool can we get Xogby to do a report about muslims and how they act and what they do and dont do ?

They’re not big book readers…

I’ve read two this week.

This has got to be the most worthless of all polls.

Do your job and tell me what it means! ::shakes fist::

I still listen to Black Sabbath (with Ozzy, it aint Sabbath without Ozzy) and I consider them Classics!

Kini on November 12, 2007 at 4:15 PM

So which is better, not reading many books or a steady diet of Chumpsky?
Just wonderin….

bbz123 on November 12, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Wait. Classical?

Conservatives probably listen to Pachelbel’s canon, the NASCAR-sipping, gun-eating, fetus-osculating boors.

Liberals listen to Mahler, Faure, and Webern, because they’re smarter and so much more sophisticated than we are.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on November 12, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Do your job and tell me what it means! ::shakes fist::

My humble interpretation: they’re a bit blase about the seriousness of the threat.

Allahpundit on November 12, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Those questions are incredibly badly written. How the heck are you supposed to give a coherent, non-simplistic answer?

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on November 12, 2007 at 4:19 PM

Reading books is poor time management. If it’s interesting, it will be made into a movie.

I’ll take 2 hours over 20 hours any day of the week.

I’m intellectually shallow like that.

natesnake on November 12, 2007 at 4:19 PM

They…they…they…they…they. That whole piece is dripping with arrogant condescension.

Oh, and Rock’n'roll! \m/ \m/

infidel4life on November 12, 2007 at 4:19 PM

They like sports, especially football and auto racing…

Real men sports.

..they watch news and business programming

Cause they don’t depend on the Government to take care of them.

They think that fictional TV shows and movies are politically biased,

They are.

..and they believe they can predict a person’s politics if they know the person’s entertainment preferences.

You can.

They don’t much like late-night TV.

Cause they have a job and have to get up early and go to work.

Allahpundit on November 12, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Woo hoo! I guessed right!

A lot of those splits make me shake my head. If you’re Christian, you should feel its your duty to help the less fortunate.

Just not with other people’s money.

RedWinged Blackbird on November 12, 2007 at 4:25 PM

wow i did not know Slayer and Motorhead was classical.

Mojack420 on November 12, 2007 at 4:26 PM

..and they believe they can predict a person’s politics if they know the person’s entertainment preferences.

I’ve only met a handful of people out of many hundreds in my life that I couldn’t decifer their political leanings based on their entertainment choices and hobbies.

I suspect I’m more observant because I don’t waste my time reading.

I hate books.

Burn them. BURN THEM ALL!!!!

p.s. Also, Patchouli is a dead give-away. Conservatives don’t enjoy smelling like dirt.

natesnake on November 12, 2007 at 4:28 PM

Damn hippies.

natesnake on November 12, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Funny. I get the Zogby polls to one of my email accounts. They almost always ask me if I am a NASCAR fan towards the end of the poll.

It cracks me up, because I’m pretty sure each set of questions is triggered by how you answered on the previous set of questions.

Most of the poll questions are cleverly worded. I guess Zogby thinks conservatives aren’t enlightened enough to see the nuance in the questions and answers.

reaganaut on November 12, 2007 at 4:32 PM

I’m not understanding how the “Red side” of questions like 4, or 11, can be characterized as such, when the majority of reds are on the “blue side” if the question. But, they have the minority red percentage bolded. Am I missing something?

nailinmyeye on November 12, 2007 at 4:33 PM

That’s a pretty horrid poll, right from the first question, which makes it clear that “nuance” is not high on their agenda in forcing respondents to answer “yes” or “no” to questions that shouldn’t be “yes or no” questions. Also, for “It is our duty to help the less fortunate,” it’s funny how the poll responses contrast with the reality.

calbear on November 12, 2007 at 4:37 PM

The study also neglects to point out that I don’t like direct sunlight on my slime covered tail. Or plaid prints.

I don’t know what teenager came up with those statements, but I wouldn’t be able to agree or disagree with half of them. I mean there are a bunch of those ‘heads I win, tails you lose’ statements.

Free Constitution on November 12, 2007 at 4:39 PM

Love Classical, Jazz, R&R and even love easy listening but hate country.
Hate Nas-Car and all team sports
Read Why God is not great this week and agreed with it.
I’ve read over 20 novels this year and scads of technical books
I abhor communism of all forms including progressive liberalism.
I know Anthropogenic global warming is crap.

And I don’t think I am very unique for a conservative.
I think G Gorgan Liddy and Ted Nugent are somewhat moderate.

I like the nuance buried in the Walmart question.

Is there a place where we can submit our own questions?

I’ve got a dandy:

“Do you kiss your sister?”

A. Never
B. Sometimes, but never on the mouth
C. Yes, but I always repent afterward
D. Only if mom is not available

natesnake on November 12, 2007 at 4:44 PM

They’re not big book readers, but when they do read, they prefer non-fiction.

I’ve read four. But I suppose books on the Holocaust, the Six Day War, Christian theology and “Infidel” don’t actually count as books… And yes, I do prefer non fiction, realistic books to pie-in-the-sky fantasies, thank you very much.

They think that fictional TV shows and movies are politically biased, and they believe they can predict a person’s politics if they know the person’s entertainment preferences.

I can guarantee that “Munich” was politically biased. I can guarantee that “Rendition” was politically biased. I can guarantee Oprah is politically biased. I can also guarantee that if I were still watching vh1 or E!, I would have punched one of the ever so clever hosts in the face – stop kissing people’s bottoms already!

mjk on November 12, 2007 at 4:46 PM

Why is Zogby even still relevant?

I guess I should give the guy credit – he came the closest in predicting Clinton’s margin of victory over Dole in 1996 and has lived off of that ever since, despite numerous ones of his polls being less than worthless.

As Tom Petty once sang, “Even the losers get lucky sometimes.”

thirteen28 on November 12, 2007 at 4:47 PM

What? No questions regarding Jeff Foxworthy or Nazis? Methinks Zog was lazy.

The Clash
The Sex Pistols
The Cure

A few weeks back, Gutfield riffed on the reasons why early punk was uniquely conservative/libertarian by nature. It was a good analysis.

Johnny Rotten = NOT LIBERAL

I’m listening to Haydn whilst I read The Looming Tower. By the way, based on The Looming Tower, we are in deep doo-doo.

I always knew Ministry and the Revolting Cocks were classical music.

BacaDog on November 12, 2007 at 4:21 PM

That was my interpretation, too. Some of us spend time actually doing stuff and being productive, like waste away the afternoon I should be working reading HotAir.

BKennedy on November 12, 2007 at 5:06 PM

I thought the attending church was the most interesting. Maybe that’s why AP told us not to look at page 2 of the data. Atheists are 4 times as likely to be liberal as conservative. 50% of conservatives go to church weekly or more, compared to 20% for liberals.

The question about duty to help those less well off was also interesting. Nearly all the liberals said so, and about half of conservatives. The other half would have understood it to be an act of compassion rather than duty. The well known fact that red-states give more to charity shows us which of duty or compassion is more effective.

Just what I was thinking.

mikeyboss on November 12, 2007 at 5:30 PM

A duty is something you do not because you neccessarily want to but because it is your obligation. For Jews, Catholics, Muslims, and perhaps some liberal Protestant denominations, that is the teaching. For conservative Protestantism there is grace and not works. James says that a faith that is not giving is a dead faith, but that doesn’t mean that giving out of a sense of duty changes that nature of your faith.

The commandment is to love your neighbor, which does not always imply giving them cash. Corinthians is clear that in some cases the best thing is to hand them over to Satan to see the error of their ways. But certainly in most cases, if you love someone you will aid them whether you have been told to or not.

Hmm, I certainly agree on movies, but not TV. Cable networks like Comedy Central and MTV have an obvious liberal bent, but can you name 3 prime-time network tv shows that are politically biased? I watch relatively a lot of tv shows and not one of them is liberal biased. If it were, I’d stop watching (e.g. Boston Legal).

And what exactly does “entertainment preferences” mean?

They only time I listen to classical music is when my LIBERAL wife plays it on the radio. Otherwise, I like prog rock (ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Umphrey’s Mcghee). I guess that is classical in a weird rock and roll kind of way.

Rose on November 12, 2007 at 6:47 PM

Fantasy shows usually avoid the media biases. Heroes, Journeyman, and Pushing up Daiys avoid current political themes.

I avoid Doctor and Cop shows entirely.

My Name is Earl and The Office might slip some lib politics in, but at least they have the creativity to be humorous about it.

NASCAR – I own an classic Muscle car.

Fox-News and Football – Yep.

Classical Music – I play Violin -(Rap/Neo-Pop isn’t music, it is noise masquerading as music.)

Favorite movies: foreign.

Downside: gotta sit in the art theatre w/ patchouli-smelling, peasant-skirted libs who denounce George Bush in the attached coffeehouse after le film. Thank goodness for DVD.

Favorite music: Rap, techno and jazz, equally. Don’t EVEN ask me to choose!

Oh, and conservatives read A LOT more than libs IMO.

Polls are stupid. Thatisall.

It is an important role of government to regulate morality.
Red-35.2 Purple-29.7 Blue-4.9
Government is too involved in regulating morality.
Red-64.8 Purple-70.3 Blue-95.1

What I find interesting is they feel the need to emphasize the “correct” answer for each group. You’ll notice even though both Red and Blue had a vast majority for government staying out of morality, Zogby felt the correct conservative answer was it’s government’s role.

The Left’s biggest problem with us is that we are confident in our convictions and selfless, while THEY are wishy-washy and selfish. I love how it drives them nuts just to see one of us demonstrating the courage of our convictions.
