Video: On Iraq, Bill Richardson doesn’t seem to know what year it is

Gen. David Petraeus was confirmed as commander of US forces in Iraq by an 81-0 vote of the Senate back in January. That news evidently hasn’t reached former New Mexico governor and Democrat presidential candidate Bill Richardson, though. Appearing on Fox News Sunday yesterday, Richardson twice referred to Gen. Ricardo Sanchez as the US commander in Iraq. Sanchez left that job in June 2004 amid the Abu Ghraib scandal (though Sanchez wasn’t personally involved in that) and was replaced by Gen. George Casey.

Gen. Petraeus’ tenure in charge of the war in Iraq has seen a remarkable turnaround in US fortunes there. Combat deaths, sectarian violence, and murders are all down; Sunni cooperation with US forces against al Qaeda is way up. Evidently, that news hasn’t reached Richardson either, and when host Chris Wallace points it out, it makes no difference. Richardson doesn’t let the facts get in his way. He not only cites Sanchez as the commander, but relies exclusively on Sanchez’s opinion of the status of the war in Iraq even though Sanchez hasn’t been in command for more than three years.

If elected president, Richardson says he would have all US troops out of Iraq within his first year. The strategy he describes for dealing with Iraq amounts to cut, run and gab with the mullahs. Among other things, he wants an “all-Muslim” peacekeeper force that also includes European forces. Never mind that whether the all-Muslim force is mostly Sunni or Shia would have a major impact on how and where it could be deployed successfully in Iraq, how does one build an all-Muslim force that includes Europeans? Especially when the Europeans aren’t exactly pulling their weight in Afghanistan.

…and he used to be UN Ambassador! Fortunately for Richardson, he is loved in New Mexico and will never be hurting for work there.

Ordinary1 on November 12, 2007 at 7:56 AM

He wants to use ‘withdrawal’ as ‘leverage’. This attitude will never get him elected to high school president.

I’d vote for Chris Wallace over Richardson for president. I think he’s just pandering for Hillary’s VP nom by being fervently anti-Iraq war. Victory is something these poeple don’t know anything about – so he won’t be making the decisions he’s talking about.

ThackerAgency on November 12, 2007 at 7:57 AM

A fine example of our well informed Democratic leadership. Where to I get in line to vote for them.

Golfer_75093 on November 12, 2007 at 8:04 AM

“There is no progress in political compromise” and he used to be our UN ambassador? At least he is not re-deploying to Okinawa.

Ropera on November 12, 2007 at 8:07 AM

Well, if we ever capture Saddam, I think Richardson will change his attitude on the war.

Tony737 on November 12, 2007 at 8:07 AM

And thusly, the myth of the “moderate” Democrat joins the ashtray of history…

Halley on November 12, 2007 at 8:12 AM

Well, if we ever capture Saddam, I think Richardson will change his attitude on the war.

Tony737 on November 12, 2007 at 8:07 AM

Ha :)

But, Governor, Gen. Sanchez hasn’t been “on the ground” in Iraq since 2004.

No, this is a quagmire.

Wait just a damn minute, here. Did you guys know he was this stupid? I didn’t. You’ve been holding out on me!

Jaibones on November 12, 2007 at 8:21 AM

This Jabroni is as thick as Jumma Carta.

TheSitRep on November 12, 2007 at 8:22 AM

Bill Richardson still thinks it’s 2004,
and if elected, well then to H!LL with the
torpedo’s and full retreat,I’m glad to see
the Liberals are telling the voters a head
of time what their planning to do in Irag,
so that the the voters know that the Liberal’s
are going to surrender.

An”All Muslim”peacekeeper force,oh that’s a brilliant idea,
and who’s going to run this operation,oh let’s take a guess
could it be the UN.

canopfor on November 12, 2007 at 8:33 AM

I just consulted my trusty Websters…and yep, beside blithering idiot is Richardson’s photo……

This clip reminds me of an encounter I had years ago…I asked a girl if she had flown before..and she said no, but she’s ridden in a car to Chicago….

I told her she’d be fine then……what do you say to that???

ritethinker on November 12, 2007 at 8:42 AM

Is he intentionally trying to look so stupid to make Hillary by comparison look good?

CommentGuy on November 12, 2007 at 8:44 AM

Oh my..

Whoa…that was a little too close for comfort.

Jaibones on November 12, 2007 at 9:06 AM

I actually watched this entire exchange. I had to keep checking to make sure I hadn’t inadvertently switched to the Comedy Channel….except it wasn’t really funny.

I was under the impression that Richardson’s popularity was plummeting in NM. Is that just wishful thinking?

Oldnuke on November 12, 2007 at 9:09 AM

“You don’t measure progress by body counts”

Richardson then goes on to cite casualty figures to justify that progress isn’t being made.

Uhm…….quack.

Bill Richardson doesn’t Democrats don’t seem to know what year it is

ericire12 on November 12, 2007 at 9:11 AM

I’m not surprised by this. Libs I know, have zero real information about what is really going on. They are “militantly ignorant“. (my coined phrase) That is, they are determined to remain stupid about current events, unless an inconvenient fact jumps up and slaps them in the face. In which case they wave it off in disbelief because it contradicts their religon.

I asked a guy I know, “Did you know we’ve actually been winning in Iraq for well over a year?” He replied, “What? I never heard that!” So then I show him the reports over at the Multinational Force Website and he asks, “If these were true, why aren’t they on the news?”

I explained “Um, they’re biased?”

dogsoldier on November 12, 2007 at 9:15 AM

What an idiot.

The guy’s like a wind-up toy that says the same thing every time you pull the cord.

Has INS checked his papers?

fogw on November 12, 2007 at 9:16 AM

Everyone knows what a ‘year’ is.

It means the same thing as a ‘grim milestone.’

Shy Guy on November 12, 2007 at 9:17 AM

It’s 1997 and I’m sticking to it.

captivated_dem on November 12, 2007 at 9:23 AM

Body counts are heavily quoted to demonstrate failure but quickly become irrelevant when they show success.

TheSitRep on November 12, 2007 at 9:27 AM

OldNuke

Probably not since it was announced today that Tom Udall is jumping into the Senate race for Domenici’s open seat.

Guess they are trying to build a family dynasty out west.

CommentGuy on November 12, 2007 at 9:34 AM

Goodness, What can one really say about this? Speechless-
The covers are coming off fast on the dems isn’t it?
Hill and illegal plants, Denny and ufo, Bama and SSN, Ricky and coma for three years, the march goes on.

mjkazee on November 12, 2007 at 9:36 AM

Direct quote:

“We can use the leverage of our withdrawal.”

Someone, please…Throw a net over this idiot.

franksalterego on November 12, 2007 at 9:39 AM

A complete and utter FOOL. Not to mention a cronic liar. And probably your next vice-president. Although these traits will serve him well to carry on the traditions set by the last couple of Democrat VPs.

Griz on November 12, 2007 at 9:45 AM

Wow! That was just incredible! So many priceless quotes in there! It would almost be funny if he wasn’t actually in a position of power. I knew the dhimms wanted 9/11 to go away, it’s amazing to see that desire manifest itself like this, he actually made the past few years just disapear!

4shoes on November 12, 2007 at 9:47 AM

His best legacy is that he was the star player of the Democrat softball team when he was in congress.

saiga on November 12, 2007 at 9:53 AM

Never mind that whether the all-Muslim force is mostly Sunni or Shia would have a major impact on how and where it could be deployed successfully in Iraq, how does one build an all-Muslim force that includes Europeans?

You just don’t recognize the true brilliance of Richardson’s idea! It’s the all Albanian peacekeeper force, and the Albanians love us! Richardson has the leadership to ignore the cynics who would point to Albania’s estimated GNI per capita of about US$2,510 in 2005.

thuja on November 12, 2007 at 9:54 AM

I skipped over this yesterday because I knew it would more blathering idiocy about foreign policy direction. I don’t see how any presidential candidate could tap his as VP. He is constantly talking out of his a$$ and would be DECIMATED in a debate with his republican rival. And I do not think his ethnicity could make up for his status as “dim bulb”.

csdeven on November 12, 2007 at 10:07 AM

Gov. Dude. If you can’t afford campaign advisors, then at least buy a laptop with wi-fi.

Dusty on November 12, 2007 at 10:14 AM

The Air Force would refer to this video as a “target-rich environment”. Just drop bombs, folks, nearly everything he said was idiotic — you almost can’t help but hit something.

Jaibones on November 12, 2007 at 10:15 AM

Ah, so you don’t measure progress by body count. You just measure negative progress by spamming the body count every night on the MSM news.

MadisonConservative on November 12, 2007 at 10:19 AM

He must have received his intel from a 7th grade class on Iraq…in 1995.
Total FOOL.
I saw this yesterday and am mystified by the “all muslim Peacekeeping force RAN BY THE UN”???? , then his dis to the troops with the “60,000 troops injured, mental health” nonsense…what does that mean?
Richardson is stuck in some unknown vortex of confusion and deception.
.
Oh, and the domestic issues Wallace goes into next? Richardson denies he has seen UFO’s (evidence by his own words is opposite of that),
but the BIGGIE, IMO, is that he calls Illegal Aliens…wait for it…. UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS.
.
Richardson has TWO brains;
one is LOST, and the other is OUT looking for it.

shooter on November 12, 2007 at 10:33 AM

I saw Richardson on CNBC a few days ago repeatedly referring to the need for a “fifty mile per HOUR” requirement for all cars. He said it over and over, to the point where the host asked him if he meant that we should lower the speed limit to 50. He looked puzzled. Of course, he meant 50 miles per GALLON” but absolutely could not figure out how to say it, and this guy used to be Secretary of Energy.

greggish on November 12, 2007 at 10:34 AM

Pwnage this complete is embassing to watch…almost.

liberrocky on November 12, 2007 at 10:36 AM

He is constantly talking out of his a$$ and would be DECIMATED in a debate with his republican rival.

He would be decimated in a debate with Kieth Olbermann.

Here’s that clip of Richardson on CNBC I was talking about…

greggish on November 12, 2007 at 10:38 AM

He wants to use ‘withdrawal’ as ‘leverage’.

I get it…
What he meant , “he is in withdrawal from too much BEVERAGE!”

Richardson then goes on to cite casualty figures to justify that progress isn’t being made.
Uhm…….quack.
subbottomfeeder on November 12, 2007 at 9:10 AM

nice catch, I wish Wallace would have caught him on this one.

shooter on November 12, 2007 at 10:45 AM

Holy moly…! Did I just hear what I just heard…?

Rugged Individual on November 12, 2007 at 10:46 AM

Personally, I want to fight the war in Iraq with pillows so no one gets hurt. Only slightly less realistic than Richardson’s “plan”.

Seixon on November 12, 2007 at 10:49 AM

If that was a job interview for the Presidency, then I say put this candidate in the not qualified box and send him a thanks but no thanks letter.

Ask him if he knows if Osama is a Sunni or Shia and watch for the blank stare and the BS answer.

Kini on November 12, 2007 at 11:27 AM

Wow… that was quite embarrassing.

I, too, was not aware that he was this stupid. That’s a little scary.

Keli on November 12, 2007 at 11:53 AM

He’ll never be President. Or Vice President for that matter.

Lord help us if someone decides to give him cabinet level power in a Democratic held administration. *shudder*

Idiot.

Stuck on Stupid was never more applicable.

In France they say “it’s ten o’clock, do you know where your husband is?”

In England they say “it’s ten o’clock, do you know where your wife is?”

In America they say “it’s ten o’clock, do you know where your children are?”

In the Richardson household they say “It’s ten o’clock,do you know what time it is?”

MaiDee on November 12, 2007 at 2:05 PM

Look on the bright side. Governor Bill “Permanent Hangdog Expression” Richardson is a Democrat, so just be thankful he didn’t start criticizing Gen. Westmoreland, calling for a bombing pause and suggesting that we send Averell Harriman to Geneva to meet with Ho Chi Minh.
