Spain’s king to Hugo Chavez: “Shut up.” Update: Video link added

posted at 7:55 pm on November 10, 2007 by Bryan

You folks look a little hungry. How ’bout some red meat?

The Ibero-American summit ended on an unusually heated note Saturday, when an angry verbal spat culminated with the king of Spain telling Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to “shut up.”

Chavez, the outspoken leftist leader who called U.S. President George W. Bush the “devil” on the floor of the United Nations last year, triggered the exchange by repeatedly referring to former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar as a “fascist.”

Aznar, a conservative and a close Bush ally who backed the U.S.-led war in Iraq, “is a fascist,” Chavez said in a speech to leaders from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. “Fascists are not human. A snake is more human.”

Spain’s current socialist prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, responded during his own allotted time by urging Chavez to be more diplomatic in his words and respect other leaders despite political differences.

“Former President Aznar was democratically elected by the Spanish people and was a legitimate representative of the Spanish people,” he said, eliciting applause from the gathered heads of state.

Chavez repeatedly tried to interrupt, but his microphone was off.

Spanish King Juan Carlos, seated next to Zapatero, angrily turned to Chavez and said, “Why don’t you shut up?”

Update: From down in the comments, here’s a link to the video. It’s somehow a little less satisfying seeing it than reading about it, probably because my Spanish is, well, nonexistent.

However, good on you King Juan Carlos. Someone had to do it, finally.

Spanish King Juan Carlos, seated next to Zapatero, angrily turned to Chavez and said, “Why don’t you shut up?”

That was not exactly what King Carlos said as the Spanish/English translator “toned” it down a “bit”.

The original Spanish was, “Chavez, sucio cerdo, por que no se quede la cabeza hacia atras hasta su culo!”

What Hugo did was insult the Spanish people.

What Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero did was explain that Spain elected the former prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar and he was not a facist.

What King Juan Carlos did was to tell Hugo, It takes one to know one.

MCPO Airdale on November 10, 2007 at 9:05 PM

William F. Buckley explained pretty well what can be said in favor of monarchy when he said he’d rather be ruled by thirty picked at random from the Boston phonebook rather than thirty Harvard profs. Juan Carlos–perhaps perversely–is one of those thirty picked at random from a phone book.
On the other hand, we should remember that while Juan Carlos is fine and Queen Elizabeth II is fine, Prince Charles is a closet semi-Islamic traitor to our Western culture and values. This is one of the issues associated with monarchy that the monarch may be a loser and traitor like Prince Charles. History is full of such stories.

Very few Americans know about the Tejerazo, not too long after Franco died. A militar, Antonio Tejero attempted a coup taking the Spanish Congress hostage. Wasn’t it Franco that picked the boy and restored the monarchy? Ironic. I wonder what would have happened to Spain if the leftist had won their civil war. I know they’re always portrayed as the good guys, but Hemmingway notwithstanding, so was Castro and Lenin and Mao, once. Same questions could be asked about Portugal and Salazar, Singapore and Lee Kuan Yew, Taiwan and Chiang Kai-Shek, Chile and Pinochet.

By the way, the Venezuelan army has been shooting student protestors all weekend and it’s no where to be found in the msm. How is it that when an ally like Pakistan cracks down on taliban supporters or Burma, which we routinely condemn but can’t get anywhere with because of the uselessness of the un, shoots it’s citizens, the msm wants to know immediately what Bush will do to stop it but are hush hush when fascist dictators crush their opposition? Maybe because they are the propaganda wing of the American Fascist party (dnc)?

Heh, one of my favorite movies of all time, Mel Brook’s History of the World Part I!

There’s a scene in that movie (the French revolution) that makes me think of Chavez. It’s when the French King Louie (Mel Brooks) is shooting clays (that turn out to be French peasants) and one of his aids says to him, “your highness the people are revolting” to which King Louie responds “you said it, they stink on ice!”

Chavez is a POS and about the only thing I like about that whole situation in Venezuela is the fact that the useful idiot celebrities that are fawning all over that socialist tyrant are getting egg on their face now that Chavez’s goons have started shooting all those that are standing up for freedom, I will however not hold my breath thinking these same celebrity POS that support and kiss is arse will ever eat crow by admitting they are wrong about Chavez!

It appears to me that Spanish King Juan Carlos told Chavez to shut up so he could listen to Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero speech. Chavez had his turn but tried to make certain that Zapatero would not get his. Wouldn’t it be nice if Hannity did the same thing on his show when the liberal kooks start interrupting with their diatribes?

Even better would have been Chavez answering the question posed by Juan Carlos. “The reason I won’t shut up is I am better, smarter, and prettier than the rest of you. Bushitler!”

Chavez in Spanish king coup jibe. Hugo Chavez said he was not going to shut up. The spat between Spain’s king and Venezuela’s president took a new turn as Hugo Chavez demanded to know the monarch’s knowledge of a 2002 coup. On Saturday King Juan Carlos told Mr Chavez to “shut up” at a summit in Chile after the president said ex-Spain PM Jose Maria Aznar was a “fascist”.
