The guys will probably strangle me for this, but it’s Friday, Allah’s still on vacation, and I get to show off my hidden soft side. Without further adieu, here’s Kellie Pickler’s much-buzzed-about performance at the Country Music Awards. She was abandoned by her mother when she was two years old and rose to stardom despite tough odds:

Blowback

Don’t like the short hair or the schmaltzy song but everything else makes up for it.

ScottMcC on November 9, 2007 at 2:42 PM

Her hair appears to be “up”. not that it matters.
Thanks for bringing tears to my eyes. Now gotta go man back up.

bbz123 on November 9, 2007 at 2:44 PM

I couldn’t stand her on Idol, or on Leno when she was being the Ditzy Blonde, but I actually like her post-Idol country music.

Mindcrime on November 9, 2007 at 2:45 PM

Didn’t realize Allah was on vacation. But I guess that explains the sudden drop in red meat atheism-related stories.

SailorDave on November 9, 2007 at 2:46 PM

As someone who also has a parent that left when I was young, that was very touching.

Benaiah on November 9, 2007 at 2:49 PM

She’s no Carrie Underwood.

“Friday country music clip”?

Has a new tradition been inaugurated at Hot Air? Because that would be pretty cool.

see-dubya on November 9, 2007 at 2:52 PM

I live in charlotte, after the awards they had her mother on the local ABC news, WSOC. There is probably a clip of it on their site. She basically tells why she left kellie, blamed it on her abusive father or something.

jp on November 9, 2007 at 2:52 PM

You rat. I can’t even comment on all her store-bought stuff…

Wow – what a song! [punching myself in the arm]

Dr. Gecko on November 9, 2007 at 2:54 PM

Yawn……….

doriangrey on November 9, 2007 at 2:54 PM

btw, I looked her up on lexis once. She was registered as a Rep. so was Chris Daughtry.

too much time on my hands.

jp on November 9, 2007 at 2:55 PM

I liked the gal, who is 17, who in accepting her award stated it was definitely the highlight of her senior year.

LakeRuins on November 9, 2007 at 2:58 PM

“Take THAT, Mom!”

Don’t care for her over-accentuated voice (even for country music), but it’s a good sentiment, and well stated.

Good on ya, Kellie.

see-dubya on November 9, 2007 at 2:52 PM

I kinda sorta only see that becoming a tradition when AP is on vacation. Can you imagine how Allah linking to a country music song each week? Nah, didn’t think you could.

Michelle, very nice. I missed it live.

Tennman on November 9, 2007 at 3:00 PM

Excellent!

Thank you Michelle

For all you do

Chuck on November 9, 2007 at 3:01 PM

Michelle likes country music?
If so. I can add that to my long list of things that make her one of my favorite people. You know – smart, a good thinker, a good looker, and on and on and on!

I still would like to know what happened between her and Fox and O’Reilly but I guess it is really none of my business.

OBX Pete on November 9, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Sad story. I followed her on American Idol, which my wife makes me watch but which I actually secretly enjoy. She seems pretty sincere in these clips, but part of me has always felt like there’s a manipulative undercurrent to her personality, like the way she faked being so incredibly stupid on the show to get votes. Still, a sad tale.

Also, I’m happy to see she’s reverted to looking classy, because right after her Idol run ended she showed up on one of their results shows looking like a current day Dolly Parton complete with ridiculously huge fake breasts and a ton of cleavage beneath about 30 lbs of makeup. I’m glad girls like Carrie Underwood are proving that you don’t need to totally tramp yourself out to receive radio play and be accessible to a mainstream audience.

It’s weird how maturing and thinking about having kids of your own someday makes you think about this stuff.

World B. Free on November 9, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Kellie is going to be on next Thursday’s version of ‘Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?’ It should be funny.

Thanks for the clip Michelle!

jp on November 9, 2007 at 2:55 PM

Idol, dare say it, is one of the only right wing shows on any major network. Cowell tells people reality and doesn’t soften it up or care about their feelings.

Too many people come on that show thinking they are great because their friends don’t want to hurt their feelings. Cowell gives them a healthy dose of reality.

It’s actually sad that people (who’ve obviously never been told that anything they do is less than perfect) react so poorly so even the most mild criticism.

“The guys will probably strangle me for this…”

For having a “hidden soft side”? It never came across on O’Reilly, but no matter. It’s a fine performance, but I’m pretty much “old school” when it comes to country music, and I can’t get past them having the award show in Las Vegas.

It must be me.

Not really a country music fan, though I like individual songs.

Don’t really know about Allah. He’s more Beastie Boys.

Ask Bryan the Texas if he likes country music.

You’ll get an amusing reaction.

Michelle on November 9, 2007 at 3:14 PM

I really do not understand how parents can abandon their children. I just can’t fathom leaving my little ones. I have my own sins but I cannot imagine why one would leave their child, especially if they claim the other parent is abusive. A sad tale but hopefully one with a happy ending.
Honestly, I hardly remember her from Idol. I’m one of those ones who watch the really crummy people and when they start getting to the good ones, I quit.

terryannonline on November 9, 2007 at 3:19 PM

It’s a fine performance, but I’m pretty much “old school” when it comes to country music

It seems that so much of country sounds like rock and roll, but with a fiddle, steel guitar or banjo thrown in. For that matter, I’d like to know how some artists, such as Keith Urban, can get away with calling their music “country”.

It’s a state-of-mind that necessarily follows a society that calls the destruction of a child in the womb – a right.

Believe it or not, Vince Vaughn’s wikipedia entry claims that he’s a Republican who voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004. Of course, that is Wikipedia, and it’s possible that some enraged liberal saw him chumming it up with O’Reilly and just had to do something about it.

RightWinged on November 9, 2007 at 3:25 PM

Even though I grew up in rural South Carolina, I never really got so much into country music, but I gotta say as I view the wrecked landscape of our culture, I’m drawn towards it. It’s like the only music left with anything real to it, any positive message, content, any soul.

And anyone accusing her of pouring on the accent, she’s not. She’s just from back in the woods, that’s all. I miss living back there…

/grew up near peach orchard, cotton fields, and moonshine stills back in the swamps.

TheGoblinKing on November 9, 2007 at 3:28 PM

Yes, Bryan was thrown out of Texas for not liking country music. I wonder how he feels about my using his old blog for regular country music gushing? He hasn’t complained yet.

Speaking of old-timey country, Hank Thompson died this week. Very sad.

see-dubya on November 9, 2007 at 3:32 PM

Wow! She’s only 21, too, and yet so classy and elegant compared to so many of her peers (Paris, Britney, Lindsey).

May God keep her safe.

I really need to be listening to more country music; any recommendations?

he is, they have some stuff in archives at Libertas blog about it. He’s placed some subtle things in his movies, Wedding Crashers and the movie with Jennifer Anniston(Break up?).

I think he’s Polish, which would explain it.

jp on November 9, 2007 at 3:51 PM

What’s amazing is she seems to have had ear monitor problems and lighting problems. And still she pulled out a powerhouse performance. That’s impressive.

John on November 9, 2007 at 3:56 PM

Yeah, good ole southern girls. She’s as strong as they come. She grew up in Albemarle about 30 mins from me. The older I get the more I appreciate home. . . Daughtry lived about 10 mins from me.

We got lots of good people here. That was a great performance and took guts to do.

ThackerAgency on November 9, 2007 at 3:56 PM

I’m a country music fan. But then, I like to listen to a lot of different types of music as well. Pretty much anything but rap.

I thought Kellie did an outstanding job. I feel for her, and I wish her all the best. I also congratulate her for all that she has accomplished.

As for why parents would abandon their children…? I don’t know. But being a foster parent, sometimes I wish that’s all parents have done to their kids. In some of the cases we’ve had, it would have been far more merciful if the parents had just abandoned their children over what they actually inflicted on them.

jedijson on November 9, 2007 at 3:57 PM

This kid is adorable and a very hard worker. This was a beautiful song and she was great!
If you want a laugh, try to find the clip of the Brentwood High School tuba player dancing behind Brad Paisley as he sang “Online”. Kelly Pickler helped put him up to it and it was hilarious!

d1carter on November 9, 2007 at 4:01 PM

I’d like to know how some artists, such as Keith Urban, can get away with calling their music “country”.

They get an agent who can convince people that you are a “rebel” and not part of the “Nashville establishment,” even though the artist never spent a day “behind the plow,” and there’s little country influence in the music, so much as white trash rock and roll, warmed over from the 1970s. At least Keith Urban plays a hybrid “git-banjo” and tries to SOUND country. Groups like Alabama only tried that schtick after they were mysteriously named “entertainer of the year” for two or three years in a row.

She’s only 21, too, and yet so classy and elegant…

Definitely the red dress.

Seriously, that was awesome, just sent it to my Mother who is a big Pickler fan, thanks MM.
I could go for a Country video Friday or even Beastie Boys.

Bryan, HATE is a strong word from a Texan about Country music. You best not ever step on Texas sand again son. :)

When I was a kid growing up in Wyoming, FM was a new kind of thing and there weren’t any FM stations outside of Casper. We had one AM station, and it was called town/and/country. They’d play one rock song and then one country song. I knew all the artists from both genres.

So I still like good old country. I like rock and roll. I like some of the country crossovers. I like symphony. I can’t stand C-rap.

Anyhoo, Bryan, just appreciate it for what it is. Not for what you want it to be or not to be. It grows on you if you personalize it a little.

I’ve seen her do that song and explain what it’s about on The View (of all places!) so I knew what was going on during the Awards show. I wondered if the audience knew because that takes alot of courage everytime she sings it. So heartbreaking. God, the things people do to their kids emotionally just leaves me sick. If you are reading this and haven’t touched base with your kids recently, why not reach out even if you can’t expect a good outcome. Just try.

Benaiah on November 9, 2007 at 6:19 PM

Good for her. Good for any success story, especially one against such odds.

On country music, I’m with Bryan, and a few others here. Could listen to some of it, if I didn’t have to hear the words. Too schmaltzy.

Agree with those of you who like it for traditional reasons; don’t get mad.

Only reason I watched the CMA was to catch one more glimpse of “The Eagles.” Henley needs to lose about 30lbs. but the rest were great. Pure honey harmony.

Not a fan of country – but everytime I’m driving back to Texas “from wherever” I somehow manage to find a radio station that helps me feel where I’m headed. Otherwise, it’s flamenco guitar, classical, slow jazz, or alternative.

Ms. Underwood is sheer talent in any language. Didn’t get the least bit upset when the significant other did a slow held breath when she came on. Compare it to the sound of a jett engine kicking to life.

Benaiah and canopfor, you’re overcoming every day. You are special for who/how you are and the actions had nothing to do with you. It’s hard indeed. My mom died of cancer when I was 13 and I miss her desperately, but mostly quietly. Moments like these remind me how hard it often is for others. We’re here and life is still miraculously wonderful, hard as it often can be. It goes on indeed. A big e-hug, respectfully,

Entelechy on November 10, 2007 at 12:47 AM

Alrighty, so now we know the score:

Hot Air’s news contributors are:

A New York atheist beta male who posts red meat topics on Christianity and enjoys the cold, calculating awesomeness of robots.

A standard social con Texan that doesn’t like country music, but composes parodies using an old-fashioned guitar.

and

A woman and minority who does not toe the multi-culti woe-is-me-my-skin-is-brown line. She also happens to be the boss.

We’re just an odd assortment of merry men here.
