Friday stupid: Open mic catches Lou Dobbs yucking it up with Charlie Rangel

Sometimes you just have to wonder what’s going through Lou Dobbs’ mind. At the close of a segment yesterday, Dobbs called Rep. Charlie Rangel “partner,” then quickly made light of it. Rangel laughs it off. Then they go to break, but the commercial doesn’t roll and the control room leaves their mics on. Dobbs again mocks himself for calling Rangel “partner” with an unevangelical phrase, and Rangel congratulates Dobbs on his primetime show. The two sound like the play softball together. Which, in the interview, they just had.
You’d think CNN would have the open mic issue taken care of by now.

Hey I understand it. Times I mumble under my breath after talking to liberals. I always ask God for forgivance for what I was thinking

Is that like gag?

Every reporter kisses the fanny of everyone they interview – it’s a way of engaging and drawing the person out.
No big deal.
Lou Dobbs is an entertainer – he finds populist issues and plays them for all the press he can get.
Lou Dobbs is an entertainer – not a believer.

Maybe they should apply for partner benefits.

“Gack” is a “Gag” mixed with a “Hack” which is approximately the involuntary physical response equivalent to coughing up a hairball. Think of it as “Gag-with-violence”

I fail to see any difference between what’s said on the mic, or off the mic.
It’s CNN.
They wear their bias on their sleeve like a badge of honor.

The bathroom mic was so much better. Lighten up Lou.
OT: Anyone here from Philadelphia that can give a personal account of WTF is going on. It sounds like a war zone there.

Gack is also the surname of a Seinfeld character.

I don’t find this surprising. Supposedly Novak and Rangel get along great outside of their political opinions. Rangel always seemed like the kinda guy it would be fun to have dinner with.

In Tagalog, yes.

What a phony. And speaking of which, I caught a few seconds — it was all I could stomach — of Dobbs on Laura Ingraham’s show, chumming it up with Laura. (AJ, if you’re out there, dive right in here, bro.)
I’m trying to remember the topic, which almost had to be illegal immigration, but the part that got me was these two lamenting the country’s “elitists” (wasn’t that the word, AJ?) being in control of something or other. Laura, from Dartmouth, UV Law, and Federal Appeals Court clerk fame, and Dobbs, with his economics degree from Harvard and his mentorship under good friend Ted Turner.
I guess the rank hypocrisy overwhelmed the actual topic; can’t even remember it.

Exactly.

Don’t think that is unusual. Philadelphia leads big cities in murder rate.

google search says gack is cross between putty and Jello.

I thought Bill the Cat (Opus) said “Gack” — turns out he said “Ack.” So that’s different.

“…if you will…” and other such phrases (”as it were“, “dare I say“, “so to speak“, ad nauseam) must be stopped, pardner.

Personally I like This honest exchange between reporters

It wasn’t so long ago that a CNN anchorwoman got caught dishing out marital advice and dissing her sister in law from the loo. Apparently, CNN does not learn very quickly.
Larraby on November 9, 2007 at 11:44 AM
wow, i forgot all about that CNN open mic in the loo link…what always come to mind was that big “X” in front of Cheney’s face that time.
My opinion…if you’re wearing a mic., always assume it’s on. Go ahead and make some small talk…but when you’re in an environment like they are there, can and most certainly will be heard, and will be used against you.
OT a bit: Did Rangel have anything to do with edging on Hagel with all the “reinstate the draft” stuff?
JetBoy on November 9, 2007 at 11:47 AM
Ha! “What kind of a name is Todd Gack anyway?” “I think it’s Dutch…” I love that show.
CP on November 9, 2007 at 12:05 PM
Todd Gack.
Anyway, is it me, or does CNN have more than their fair share of control room issues? We all remember the one anchorchick trashing her sister in-law in the bathroom with her mic on… over top of President Bush’s speech! We remember Cheney’s “X”, etc. etc. What kind of operation are they running over there?
RightWinged on November 9, 2007 at 12:17 PM
Damn! You beat me to it!
RightWinged on November 9, 2007 at 12:18 PM
I guess most folks didn’t previously know either one of them was gay.

Lou has always held the people in contempt and the leaders on a pedestal. Everything is always the voter’s fault with him. Them thar leaders are only doing their best fur us don’t you know. In his mind, it’s our fault if we elect some POS like Rangel or Cheney. The only politician he holds responsible for anything is GW… the least responsible office for legislation issues and America’s problems.
Griz on November 9, 2007 at 12:32 PM
Pardon my verb creation, but … Rangel got enough strokes in that interview that I think Dobbs gacked up something later on, but not a hairball.
doufree on November 9, 2007 at 1:17 PM
Sounds like he just slipped. Partner is no different than saying dude or whatever. As to the chummy, it sounds no different than the fakeness that you hear at office parties. As to the open mic, I thought they were always open . . . this was leaked by CNN themselves. Prolly to try to clear things up. Dobbs almost sounds like he wished Rangle would let him do some damage control and shut up already hehe

It is o.k. to call one of you servants, partner, after all you are making his payroll.
