Even if there is a message that is good overall, there are other lessons from this commercial that are just as important…like children shouldn’t be ashamed of their parents, that children need to understand and accept the consequences of taking a moral stand, or even that children shouldn’t ‘cheat’ on that moral stand and escape the consequences.

These are larger lessons than the obvious message, if you ask me.

Kind of going to the other extreme aren’t you?

The point is that saving energy and protecting the environment is desirable. If for nothing else the motive is monetary one can find some things in their lives that they can change/modify. But if it is going to be the complete other extreme you can almost count on bad laws being passed.

The headlines tell the truth: “SUV DRIVES OFF CLIFF KILLING DRIVER”, “SUV JUMPS CURB AND KILLS 19 INNOCENT PEDESTRIANS?, “SUV VERSES HYBRID, SUV WINS: All occupants of Hybrid DOA”

if that’s the case, then how come the little tree hugger doesn’t seem to mind her dad is driving one person, not carpooling with others?

No one is putting a gun to your head to “go green” so don’t let a commercial ruin your day.

Some of the green stuff is fine, sure it is. I have thought about solar panels as well. It is what is behind this movement I am concerned about! As for smoking,, sure,, it’s a bad habit. I had a relative die from lung cancer. I suppose if we could have had the government arrest him and imprison him for smoking, they might have extended his life a few years! I suppose, too, if it were illegal to own a gas guzzler and laws were passed mandating bikes, the air might get clearer!

I haven’t bought an American brand car in almost 25 years. Toyota and Nissan build cars that are (1) reliable and low maintenance & (2) very fuel efficient. The green aspect was not the primary reason but is a byproduct.

Some of the green stuff is silly but it is not all bad. We will buy our last earthly house in about five years and plan to have solar power, heat pumps and the like. The savings are worth it as well as the independence from the several power outages the area has each year.

No one is putting a gun to your head to “go green” so don’t let a commercial ruin your day.

If you think this economy can absorb $6.00 a gallon gas, feeding illegal aliens, protecting Iraqi borders, propping Chinese currency and exports, and spending with credit cards for long through the Clinton administration, you are in la-la land.

So, kick back in your Tahoes and Armadas. Vote for Rudiani. And buy another iPhone. Your day is coming quickly.

I was going to start a GREEN landscaping business last summer, I could hire illegals, use the old fashioned hand push mower, drive hybrid trucks with a big eco friendly label on the side and charge the rich liberals around here triple. I could even give them a little sign that says “My lawn was cut by an eco-friendly landscaper” to make the neighbors jealous, and ensure more calls. It’s gold! I mean GREEN!

Actually, landscape companies that used “green” equipment would definitely have a marketing edge. But actually, hybrid lawn mowers make a lot of sense. Because internal combustion engines are most efficient running at a steady rpm, it’s actually more energy efficient to have the engine run a generator that powers electric motors, like in a diesel electric locomotive. Whether or not this will cost less money over the life of the mower depends on the cost of the motor and generator, but the idea is worth looking into. I’ve spoken to some landscapers and they’d love to plug in to the house’s AC lines instead of paying for all that gasoline, though I’m pretty sure that 110 might not be enough for those large commercial mowers. You might need a 220 line if you are going to try to run on cabled electricity – that and some kind of tethering system.

Seriously though, aside from hybrids being more expensive, who the hell is going to get excited about some of the hybrid SUVs that can get MPGs in the low 20s… Sure, it may be an improvement from 15 or whatever, but is it really anything to get excited about?

GM is just rolling out it’s full size “two-mode” hybrid SUVs, with hybrid versions of their full size pickups on deck. Essentially the system involves two electric motors, a sophisticated automatic transmission, a V8 with cylinder deactivation and a battery. Overall, they are about 25% more efficient. So why should we care?

Because more people drive full size pickups and SUVs than 35 mpg small cars. GM and Ford each sell at least 700,000 full size pickups a year. Toyota sells about 200,000 Priuses a year. GM improving the mileage on all those pickups will sae a lot more fuel than coming out with a 40 mpg small car. Twenty five percent less fuel on 3/4 of million vehicles is a lot of gasoline.

BTW, GM announced that they will have a fuel cell powered car for sale in 2011, most likely on the same platform as the Chevy Volt.

Excellent point. We have to make sure the agri-lobby doesn’t cause us to go down this wrong path. At least use sugar and not corn.
