FBI warns: Al Qaeda targets malls in LA, Chicago this holiday season

I’m sure we’ll hear a deafening questioning of the timing about this shortly.

The FBI is warning that al Qaeda may be preparing a series of holiday attacks on U.S. shopping malls in Los Angeles and Chicago, according to an intelligence bulletin distributed to law enforcement authorities across the country this morning.

The alert said al Qaeda “hoped to disrupt the U.S. economy and has been planning the attack for the past two years.”

Law enforcement officials tell ABCNews.com that the FBI received the information in late September and declassified it yesterday for wide distribution.

Here’s the announcement. It’s a reminder, and some of us do need reminding, that al Qaeda remains a threat

Chicago is a big distribution hub for a lot of the illegals in this country. If you read articles about a lot of the illegals in this country you will normally find a reference to them passing through Chicago somewhere in it. That is just to say Chicago seems to be infected with a “See no Evil” security mindset and that would indeed make them ripe for this kind of attack.
Pray it doesn’t happen but I certainly don’t doubt that the Al Queda types would plan and try fervently to pull something like this off.

lol…malls in LA & Chicago eh? I wonder why these cities are targets?

Could it have something to do with the fact that there is practically zero chance of anyone shooting back?

I love Gun Free Zones!

Ochlan on November 8, 2007 at 12:53 PM

It’s the combination that makes the two such major targets.
Certified Victim Zones plus ’see no evil’

Put extra guards around Victoria Secrets. If they are going to die, they will take the 72 virgin women with them.

right2bright on November 8, 2007 at 12:56 PM

I believe would could make peace with al Qaeda with a nice gift basket of Chinese toys. Especially Aqua Dots.

km on November 8, 2007 at 1:00 PM

And they’d have done it by now if we didn’t have ‘em tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Schools, malls, high rise apt. buildings, churches, stadiums, pizza, ice cream and coffee shops, anything you can think and some you wouldn’t have thought of. This is why we need to keep the war in their back yard and keep it out of ours.

If Al Qaeda really wants to hurt the economy, they should just focus on getting Democrats elected next year. I’m pretty sure that Universal Health Care will do the job nicely.

Kensington on November 8, 2007 at 1:03 PM

That PDF doesn’t look like much of an intelligence bulletin.

RushBaby on November 8, 2007 at 1:04 PM

So predictbale. Well actually Bryan predicted it in the post but just look at the first couple of comments on the story’s comments section:

Hmm…economy on the rocks, Bush’s disapproval rating hits a record high, dissatisfaction with Iraq hits a record high…BOOGA BOOGA! Terror! Al Qaeda! Look over there!

Big deal…

Posted by: Jazz | Nov 8, 2007 12:04:50 PM

Too far away from the election; if they stage an attack now they’ll only have to stage another one next year.

Posted by: Mike Grello | Nov 8, 2007 12:07:25 PM

Everybody needs to stay calm….they tell us this every fricken year since 9/11. It’s a government scare tactic. We are close to another election, and what better way to keep the sheep behind the fence then by fear of the “maybe” happening.

Posted by: andrea | Nov 8, 2007 12:09:10 PM

What a bunch of morons. And can anyone here even doubt that these are the same people who would be accusing the admin of “ignoring the threats” if, God forbid, anything actually does happen? Again, what a bunch of morons.

I would like to ’see’ teachers/staff at schools/colleges adopting a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and packing anyway, despite the risk to their jobs/liberty from stupid laws & bureaucrats.

We have already uncovered credible intel related to terrorist observance of our totally insecure education system.

Ochlan on November 8, 2007 at 1:05 PM

It’s all Bush’s fault. He runs Al Qaeda out of Iraq and they move to Chicago and L.A.

rivlax on November 8, 2007 at 1:06 PM

Don’t know why they haven’t hit here in Chicago. Totally not ready. All they have to do is watch the news here see the incompetents Daley hires and promotes in the Police and Fire ranks to know it’s an easy target. Some of our Battalion chiefs can’t string a sentence together without using two or three double negatives. The police dept is just as bad. If they ever saw a Daley news conference they have to think everyone here is and idiot. I mean, Hillary, Shakowsky, Emanuel, Obama and Durbin are from here. But then, all we have here is taco stands, rib joints and pierogi factories, all high value targets.

I shudder to imagine the supreme nuclear beatdown these clowns and their minders would face should they take out a Vicky’s Secret in my town.

CurtZHP on November 8, 2007 at 1:16 PM

This isn’t really news. The warnings have occurred before.

It’s only fitting that the religion of peace would target civilians during a season associated with an alleged prophet of Islam - Jesus Christ.

OhEssYouCowboys on November 8, 2007 at 1:25 PM

It’s odd last year the mall I work at had burkas all over the place. Ramadan came, they went away and never came back. I just wonder if they know something I don’t.

O/T funniest thing I saw was the hot pink one. First thought that came into my head was Bubblegum Jihad. Second thought was, Dude, that would make a killer band name. Third thought was, no pun intended on the killer part.

MirCat on November 8, 2007 at 1:28 PM

Not to worry, Ron Paul’s crack squad of mall security guards will be on the job.

RINO_Hunter on November 8, 2007 at 1:30 PM

Dr. Ron Paul shall save the true believers, but nay he shall smite the heretics!

Kensington on November 8, 2007 at 1:37 PM

This is why we need more muslim immigration into the United States. The muslims will feel less alienated because they’ll have more people around them doing muslim kind of things like mutilating girls’ genitalia and honor killing. Less alienation equals less bombing.

thuja on November 8, 2007 at 2:09 PM

Why Chicago and Los Angeles? Don’t the terrorists know those are BLUE STATES?!?

aunursa on November 8, 2007 at 2:25 PM

This will make for lots of great sales at the Mall this year!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on November 8, 2007 at 2:31 PM

Just by issuing the warning, the threat has been lessened. There is always a warning whenever the FBI gets close, and then the plotters go back underground.

Why LA and Chicago? I wonder where the best cover is offered to plot these things. Nothing to do with gun free zones, it’s about hiding in plain sight.

AQ said they want to strike at the “Heart of a America”
Figure that out,and you’ll have your targets,I think.

2 facts:

It is easy for an illegal alien to obtain a Driver’s License from the State of Wisconsin, and yet live in Chicago for years.

Fact 2:

The September 11, 2001 terrorists were here illegally, and yet were still able to obtain driver’s licenses.

We have no interior security here in America. And yet our
politicians talk more about amnesty and rewarding law-breakers with USA citizenship, instead of talking about security and enforcement within the USA.

ColtsFan on November 8, 2007 at 4:08 PM

Cavuto was just discussing this. Due to the issues we’re facing in the economy right now, i.e., the subprime financial crisis that is effecting everything, it was an opportune time for them to hit us since the economy is so vulnerable.

I recall that these threats aren’t new, however, I will still be doing some heavy online shopping for Christmas.

mimi1220 on November 8, 2007 at 5:09 PM

With the number of “persons” running around Dallas in full burka they’d not even be noticed should they decide to hide a little surprise under that tent. Those cute little detectors at entrances of malls and stores will go off with a large belt buckle but are useless detecting anything else.

mimi1220 - Yep, I’m the online shopping queen and I’ll do most of my Christmas shopping on line too.

24K lady on November 8, 2007 at 5:30 PM

Dallas has evidently REALLY changed in the 5 years I’ve been gone! Wow.

mimi1220 on November 8, 2007 at 5:42 PM

Burka = mass storage device of stolen goods!

SouthernGent on November 8, 2007 at 6:09 PM

Correction: FBI warns: Al Qaeda again targets malls in LA, Chicago this holiday season.

This isn’t the first time they’ve ‘targeted’ Chicago and LA, but with the oh-so willing help of the defeat-o-crats perhaps this time they will succeed. The only question that will not be answered is, when will the investigation begin on why those ILLEGAL Aliens had drivers licenses.

No one will blame the terrorist assistors Governor Rod R. Blagojevich or AAAARRRnuld.

DannoJyd on November 8, 2007 at 8:00 PM

Liberal propaganda designed to create a recession by making people avoid shopping malls.

Well then count LA out. As any decent San Diegan can tell you, LA is the “sphincter of America.”

I can legally conceal carry in 34 states. Guess how many states I avoid visiting and in how many states I will not go to malls or other areas where large numbers of people congregate? Still doesn’t begin to protect loved ones who live in those states or even those physically near me from a bomb.

I hate it! I hate that we have to live this way. I hate that the gov’t refuses to make the hard decisions to protect we the citizens instead bowing to political correctness and refuses to let those who have willingly put themselves in harms way to protect us do the job they have trained to do. I hate that sick worry when I know my few remaining close family members, all of whom live in states where they are not legally able to defend themselves, are going shopping at large malls or attending events with large groups of people. I hate that people are unaware enough that they actually have to ask me why I carry a firearm, why I take advanced classes on using it effectively, why I started taking martial arts again and why I am concerned again about my physical conditioning. I hate that when I bought a new pocket knife today I was nearly as concerned with how it fits my hand as a weapon as how it functions as tool. I hate that the millions of us who maintain a quiet, prepared vigilance are derided in the media and public dialogue as nut cases, paranoid, racists, hate mongers, etc. I hate that most of the public do not understand that we are the same people who were minute men and militia and posse members in generations past and that only those on the front lines long for peace more than we do. I hate that it will get worse before it gets better. Most of all I hate that we cannot do more sooner to finish this rather than wait. /rant
