Google Earth finds mysterious Nork ship
posted at 7:45 am on November 7, 2007 by Bryan
Google Earth is making waves with an image of a warship anchoring, its weapons removed, in Nampo port near the Taedong River in North Korea. The 3,000-ton Krivak-class frigate was manufactured in Russia.
The picture of the 3,000-ton destroyer has set tongues wagging because the North was only known to have three warships with a displacement of more than 1,000 tons — two 1,500-ton Najin-class frigates manufactured in the 1970s and one 1,600-ton Soho-class frigate in the 1980s.
There’s a pretty good shot of it at the link, along with some speculation about its purpose, which could be anything from a floating museum to an as yet unfitted warship. North Korea would be foolish to attempt tangling with the South Korean navy. The South Koreans have built their own Aegis destroyers. Those ships are not to be messed with.

Blowback

You know? We still owe North Korea for the USS Pueblo (which they still hold). We owe them for trying to shoot down our aircraft over international waters. We owe them for attempting to infiltrate our lines at the DMZ and for shooting several of our troops.
I say we send two or three harpoons at that ship. Just because we can — and because we owe them.

I’m just wondering, did google screw up,
because it looks a lot like the US warship
that the North Koreans captured.

Ain’t modern teknowledgy amazin?
Google (Yahoo, etc.) may be run by a bunch of liberals, but they manage to bring some amazing information to us ‘little people’.
Plus, Lately I’ve seen several applications integrating Google Earth with data that individuals can cheaply acquire or generate on their own, that just ‘blow my mind’.
As far as North Korea; GeorgeJ is on the right track. ;-)

We DO owe them and I submit that we ought to pay back with interest. ;)

I believe the Norks have more than a few mysterious vessels being used for nefarious purposes.
sonnyspats1 on November 7, 2007 at 8:20 AM
Let’s see, google can’t tell the difference between
a US Warship and a North Korean vessel, but google
probably is pretty sure there was no WMD,by any
chance who ever is in charge of the Satelite photos
are they the same people who showed the UN around in
Lebanon, like missile damage on the ambulance that didn’t
exist.

It doesn’t look like the USS Pueblo to me.
It could be a Krivak without the missile launchers and gun turrets.

North Korea keeps telling us that they have no dangerous stuff there…let’s make honest men of them!

Does South Korea have the will to stand up to the North? Doesn’t seem that way to me.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on November 7, 2007 at 9:52 AM
Word.
The Russian commies sit in the background, stirring the confrontational pot, waiting and watching for the fun to start. They are a huge weapons supplier to our known enemies around the globe. They are waging war with us, they have never stopped waging war with us, the only difference is now they pretend to be innocent bystanders. This is hardly a clever tactic since their actions and motives are so transparent.
They need a warning shot across the bow. Time to let them know in no uncertain terms if North Korea, Iran, Syria or any other country they supply arms to make a move against us, our allies or our vital interests, we will consider it an attack on the U.S. by Russia and retaliate accordingly and swiftly.
Then we’ll see if the world’s troublemaker still think it’s fun to just sit back and watch.
All we need is someone with the Malkins to tell them.

What would be nice is if someone actually knew what the hell they were looking at. Just a bit of difference between those two.

Heh, was wondering if anyone else caught that.

Former Navy here. Been on both. Believe me, in heavy seas you want to be on the destroyer. lol
Kowboy on November 7, 2007 at 10:44 AM
Well if that isn’t an excuse to bomb it than nothing is…..
doriangrey on November 7, 2007 at 10:46 AM
They will probably just use it as a cargo ship. Maybe ship some concrete or something.

WOW! Should make for some great TV when the crap hits the fan.

There isn’t even a passing resemblance.
Blacklake on November 7, 2007 at 12:09 PM
Why not? If the North Koreans claim the ship does not exist, how could they complain about it being destroyed?

Silly me, it’s a floating museum!

The Chosun.com article about South Korea’s Aegis destroyers is amusing for its continual one-upmanship of Japan’s Aegis destroyers. It’s endearing. And it’s interesting that the article doesn’t mention North Korea at all (perhaps it’s too touchy).

Nope the Pueblo location is know, it was not a warship by any means. I believe this one is likely for scrap. It is a Russian class and they have nothing remotely capable of arming up the launch tubes and such that class was built with. They simply don’t have the tech if you look at their whole spectrum of weapons they do have.
They don’t have enough ready cash to pick up fully capable stuff from the Russians, India has been buying more of their used equipment than almost anyone else and also is one of the major scrap yards for stuff the Russians have been decommissioning.
CommentGuy on November 7, 2007 at 1:26 PM
Now if Googlemaps would show us the location of the AQ and Taliban bases in Pakistan, the insurgent bases in Syria, the supply lines from Iran to the Iraqi insurgents, etc.
Don’t worry. I won’t hold my breath.

I’m hearing today that N. Korean is dismantling its Nuclear Weapons Program for food and electricity aid. What we need right now is Madeline Albright and Hillary Clinton to work their magic. Then we’d be assured that they’ll have that ship functional and they’d be paying for it with U.S. aid.

These idiots can’t even feed themselves. I find it hard to believe they think they can take down the USA. They are on Gilligans Island, and they will be rescued soon. This kind of stuff has a hard time hanging in there in this day and age. Their days are numbered.

Capt. Ronery, he’s so ronery.
