Yeah, I laughed and grinned at the same time.

NYT Sunday circ. down 7.5%, daily down 4.5%. Keep up the good work folks. Times stock down to same level as April ’97.
If you invested $1 in NYT in 1997, you’d have $1.00 today, (not adjusted for inflation). Inflation adjusted, prob. $.80.
Way to go Pinchy.

There was also some dumb jabs at the military and Christians, though.
frankj on November 5, 2007 at 12:53 PM
Yeah I caught the show last night…of course to be fair, they dissed the troop equipment too just moments before, when Homer is going through Bart’s action figures, picks up one and says something like: “GI Joe with insufficient body armor…”
JetBoy on November 5, 2007 at 12:54 PM
I saw an interview with the writer and he says it takes about 6 months to make each episode. so he was thinking this at least 3 or 4 months ago.
Kaptain Amerika on November 5, 2007 at 1:15 PM
Yeah, it was something like Bart was showing off an action figure and said, “Iraq Warrior: Sufficient body armor not available.”
What always angers me about it is that the people who make that point usually know nothing about body armor and honestly don’t give a rat’s ass beyond that they think it’s a political point they can use as a bludgeon.

WOOHOO!
There is a God!
locomotivebreath1901 on November 5, 2007 at 1:28 PM
Yah. But y’know, if they balance it out… like the Daily Show used to do, I can handle it.

It’s the Simpsons. It’s an overwhelmingly left-leaning show. Chances are Groening just made that joke without any satire intended, because he thinks it’s hilarious that the NYT is the most effectively seditious organization in the country.
MadisonConservative on November 5, 2007 at 1:32 PM
They even put some insults like that last night’s show. The dig at the New York Times was the only light in that insanely preachy show.
Let’s see, Bart had a GI Joe type figure that came with “inadequate body armor.” And there was something else about the war that actually made me complain out loud, but I’m forgetting what it was.

I don’t know if they can be lumped into a single category like that. The Simpsons goes through phases. They took some serious shots at President Clinton back during his administration. Though, based on their eppy crapping on the military, I think it’s pretty obv. that the current staff of writers is in the Democratic camp.
For now. There’s always hope.
John from OPFOR on November 5, 2007 at 1:35 PM
Serious shots? All I ever saw were shots at his infidelity, which really masks the horrible things that man did.
Esthier on November 5, 2007 at 1:44 PM
That’s all well and nice, and kudos to them.
But they still got plenty of their left digs in.
There was the already mentioned “Iraq war action figure with insufficient body armor”.
And there was Bart and the gang pulling a Halloween trick on an oil tanker so it would crash into a hotel hosting a Republican presidential debate.
Don’t think for a minute Simpsons has changed.
That’s why South Park will always be my favorite. It’s the only animated show that isn’t laden with liberal undertones. They even manage to lean conservative at times. Where else can you see Al Gore going around in a cape warning of the impending danger of “Manbearpig”?
The best thing ever was them laying waste to the 9/11 Truther movement.
Hawkins1701 on November 5, 2007 at 1:49 PM
I stopped watching the show after the same character had a line using the Iraq situation as a punchline.
Hening on November 5, 2007 at 1:58 PM
By far one of my favorite parts of the last episode.
I believe I remember one specific quote from at least one of the show’s creators… “I hate conservatives, but I really, really hate liberals.”
I could be wrong about that, but if true it sums up the show pretty well in my mind. I mean I’ve never gotten the sense that they like Republicans, but you can definitely tell they’re not fans of liberals.
Esthier on November 5, 2007 at 2:07 PM
At one point, they blew up the GOP Presidential debate. It happened so quick I almost didn’t see the sign on the building.
CookeyD on November 5, 2007 at 3:11 PM
That was too easy! Great but too easy.
On-my-soap-box on November 5, 2007 at 3:44 PM
Didn’t they slander the troops last year?
mymanpotsandpans on November 5, 2007 at 3:58 PM
“The Simpsons” lean a little bit left, but they will satirize both sides given a sufficient opportunity. Don’t forget the episode where at the end Clinton proclaimed himself a “bad president.”
WasatchMan on November 5, 2007 at 4:37 PM
That was about a decade ago.
frankj on November 5, 2007 at 5:24 PM
M-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m…………………. Sulzbergers!!!
Shy Guy on November 5, 2007 at 5:28 PM
Have to agree. The Simpsons can be very funny, but its liberal core cannot be hidden. South Park has made a career out of ridiculing the brain-dead foibles of liberals from Day One.
And that Manbearpig episode should have gotten an Emmy.
Excelsior!
