NFL Week 9 open thread

posted at 12:15 pm on November 4, 2007 by Bryan

The real Super Bowl might happen today. The unbeaten Colts host the unbeaten Patriots, both coming off big wins last week (well, if you want to call the Pats’ satisfying 52-7 drubbing of the Redskins a big win). The rest of the schedule is anti-climactic by comparison to that game, but Philadelphia hosts the Boys, the Packers go to Kansas City, and there are a whole lot of other games that I can’t be forced to care about.

A lot can change the rest of the way, though that game is huge. Keep an eye on the Chargers, who may be able to make some noise. Likely the Colts and Patriots will meet again in January.

Next week’s Giants-Cowboys winner may have the inside track in the NFC, to be served up as the sacrificial lamb for the Super Bowl.

Go Patriots!

Corky on November 4, 2007 at 12:20 PM

I hope the game lives up to the hype.

Rick on November 4, 2007 at 12:22 PM

How about them Chargers?

Theworldisnotenough on November 4, 2007 at 12:25 PM

San Diego at Minnesota.

Well, I know how this will end.

(sigh)

hinduconservative on November 4, 2007 at 12:29 PM

Since my Bears are off this week (hopefully getting their heads out of their orifices and re-learning how to tackle), I’ll be rooting for the Lions to get clobbered at home by the Broncos and then rooting for the Patriots to clobber the Colts.

I will also be rooting for the media to stop whining about “the Patriots are running up the scooooooore!” I’m sick of that already.

Also, it would really be nice if they would mention the fact that the Colts came back on them in the AFC Championship game last year after the Patriots were up something like 21-3 or 28-3 or something. But that inconvenient fact is never mentioned in the “running up the score” whine-fests. I wonder why.

Michael in MI on November 4, 2007 at 12:31 PM

The big matchup is here! I hope the Colts win. But do not forget San Diego is starting to play better. Do not forget Pittsburgh is playing well too. The gap between these teams might narrow.

Go Colts!

Jezla on November 4, 2007 at 12:32 PM

I’m more concerned with Packers-Chiefs. The Chiefs are the one team that Brett Favre has never beaten. Time to put an end to that.

packsoldier on November 4, 2007 at 12:33 PM

ESPN is reporting Ben Watson (TE) will return for the Pats today. Waston has 18 receptions on the season and is averaging 12.3 yds/reception. He was injured in the Dallas game on his first reception of 28 yards.

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 12:35 PM

My Week 9 forecast.

JammieWearingFool on November 4, 2007 at 12:36 PM

(well, if you want to call the Pats’ satisfying 52-7 drubbing of the Redskins a big win)

It wasn’t as satisfying as it could have been – how could the Pats give up seven points like that?

Slublog on November 4, 2007 at 12:42 PM

The Pats cheat…gotta go with the Colts here.

JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 12:44 PM

Well well this week I am in NJ. The Eagles have a chance to pick up two games on Dallas with a win this week. The Philly fans are a bona fide 12th man when it comes to the despised Cowboys. There the team we love to hate. ON the other hand my money is on the Colts!

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 12:35 PM

If the Colts shut down the Pats middle passing game it could be a long day for Brady. But that would require the front four to stop the run solo. I do not think this will happen. Sure to be a chess match.

Being a Charger fan and San Diegan I am contractually obligated to detest Tom Brady and the horse he rode in on…

Theworldisnotenough on November 4, 2007 at 12:49 PM

So the only two, winless teams, Miami and St. Louis are having their perspective bye weeks on the same Sunday and we’re expected to believe its just coincidence?

JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 12:44 PM

Every team cheats. Some just don’t get caught. And some just do it a little better than the rest.

Also, shouldn’t it be “Bill Bellicheck cheats”? And, if that is the case, that calls into question every team he has ever been on. Going back to his days under Bill Parcells. Which is probably why people like to say “The Patriots cheat”, since if it was Bellicheck, then that would pin cheating on other teams as well. Can’t have that. Just gotta hate on the Patriots.

Michael in MI on November 4, 2007 at 1:02 PM

Pats by more than 13 over the Colts.
No contest after the first quarter.
This Pats team is the best ever, ever.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on November 4, 2007 at 12:49 PM

Rove you magnificent bastard!
Really though the games are scheduled before preseason. Don’t forget it was Miami themselves who stopped two runs at their prefect season. Spooky huh?

sonnyspats1 on November 4, 2007 at 12:04 PM

You know what it means when one of those little yellow flags hits the ground? Someone’s been cheating. You know what it doesn’t mean? That you put up 41.5 points per game on average and that you beat your opponents by 25.5 points per game.

I love how the knocks have come full circle. First it was “They cheat!”. Then it was “They haven’t played anybody!” Then it was “They ran up the score!”

That said, the Jets suck and they cheat, so I’m going to have to go with the Redskins.

Pilgrim on November 4, 2007 at 12:49 PM

I wish the Titans were in the NFC, or at least in the AFCwest… by the way, what sort of lunatic cartographer came up with the NFL layout for division of teamconferences?

christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 12:52 PM

Well, I hope you guys feel sorry for me today. The Texans play the Raiders at…4:15…on CBS. *Sigh*. We may still be able to watch the Colts v. Pats at a sports bar, but that is what every one else is thinking too.

You know Jetboy, the Pats have some spare video equipment just lying around.

The Colts are probably going to need it to stand a chance.

Just face the facts. The Patriots can STOMP any team, and to suggest they need to cheat to do it is ridiculous.

There’s no crying in football. If you can’t stop them from scoring, try harder next season.

If you think videotaping something that is visible to 80,000 people in the stands in any way provides a unfair competitive advantage, you don’t know much about football.

When the Dolphins purchased tape of Brady’s line calls and used it shutout the Patriots and nearly kill Brady, you couldn’t find a Patriot or a Patriot fan complaining. It’s gamesmanship. It’s has been a part of the NFL since its inception.

All ManJudas did was anger a sleeping Giant and the teams on the Pats schedule are paying the price for it.

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 1:54 PM

No, they don’t. If you think the Jets cheat, by the looks of the season so far, they aren’t doing a very good job of cheating.

Brian Billick seems to think the Jets cheat. They’re not doing a very good job of playing football either, but that doesn’t mean they’re not doing it.

Pablo on November 4, 2007 at 1:56 PM

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 1:54 PM

NFL rules state: “…no video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game”

And if the Pats did nothing wrong, one would think they would have protested the fines and punishment doled out by the NFL hours later. And it’s not like it’s the first time the Pats tried that crud…

JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 2:05 PM

With the exception of the interception, FAVRE is looking good for a short weekoff QB. Aren’t the Chiefs coming off a byeweek? KC may have STAVREd some of their players. The Chief cheerleaders look great though, nice CUVREs.
GO PACK!!!

christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 2:06 PM

Pablo on November 4, 2007 at 1:56 PM

Yeah, and nothing ever came out of that accusation. Bunch of malarky.

JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 2:08 PM

Right. And NFL rules state you can’t hold. Can’t touch a receiver after 5yds, etc., etc. They are all rules violations with penalties. If you call one cheating, you have to call it all cheating.

Ask Bill Polian if the Jets were cheating when they pumped up the crowd noise through the speakers last season. With the Colts about to lose he assaulted a NYJ official over it.

Ask the 49ers and Broncos if they were cheating when the circumvented the Cap to keep players they technically could not afford.

This is payback for a Coach who gives the dishonest media the middle finger. Now, they have a club to beat him over the head with. Problem is, he took that club, turned it around and is beating the NFL over the head with it.

The rumor is, Belichick took one for the entire NFL which is why the whole NFL is rather quiet. After 30 years he knew each “trick” used by every team in the league and rather than using it to deflect attention from himself, he ate it.

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 2:13 PM

I repeat:

They’re not doing a very good job of playing football either, but that doesn’t mean they’re not doing it.

As for the Pats:

Belichick said Monday that he would comply with Commissioner Roger Goodell’s request to turn over the Patriots’ video library and notes.

And nothing’s come of that. Face it, the better team wins, the worse team loses. And on Dec 16, the Patriots will win and the Jets will lose. Again.

Sammy316 on November 4, 2007 at 2:21 PM

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 2:13 PM

Oh, puh-leese…to compare game penalties with videotaping signals and lump them together as one and the same is truly a stretch. Beli-cheat “took one” and “ate it” for the good of the NFL? Once again I say: Puh-leese.

Pablo on November 4, 2007 at 2:14 PM

It’s gonna be interesting to see what comes out of the PAts video library. And yes…the Jets will most likely lose to them again. Patriots are good, I don’t deny it. But they cheat too…got caught…and no amount of spinning or winning will make that go away.

JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 2:23 PM

OK, JB, thrill me with your football knowledge and tell me how videtaping something done in the open provides an unfair competitive advantage. If you do, you will be the first at any level to provide an explanation.

Pablo on November 4, 2007 at 2:14 PM

And let’s not even get into the blatant hypocrisy of ManJudas who knew of, and directly benefit from, everything the Patriots did. He’d be asking if you wanted fries with your combo meal if it wasn’t for BB.

Make no mistake, Billick’s comments were a shot across ManJudas’ bow. Think he’ll find it easy to get a job in the NFL when he gets fired from the Jets?

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 2:27 PM

With todays cameras and the zooms, it makes no difference if taken from the sidelines or in the nosebleed section. This is all such a non factor. Players and coaches move team to team with play books, signals, game plans, scouting reports, videos..etc.

Bottom line: It is the players executing on the field that decides the score.

Wade on November 4, 2007 at 2:37 PM

OK, JB, thrill me with your football knowledge and tell me how videtaping something done in the open provides an unfair competitive advantage. If you do, you will be the first at any level to provide an explanation.

Wheter or not the videotapes were to be used for competetive advantage or not is besides the point….there is to be NO VIDEOTAPING during the game on the field or sidelines, especially by one team on the other. I don’t get what you fail to understand about that…

And let’s not even get into the blatant hypocrisy of ManJudas who knew of, and directly benefit from, everything the Patriots did. He’d be asking if you wanted fries with your combo meal if it wasn’t for BB.

Whatever. The real Judas here is Belicheat, who cut and ran from the Jets hours after the other Judas, Parcells, failed to live up to his obligation to bring the Jets to the Superbowl….Close, but no cigar.

Make no mistake, Billick’s comments were a shot across ManJudas’ bow.

Wow, is that all you got, Billick? Unsubstantiated allegations with absolutely nothing to back ‘em up? Like I said…that went nowhere fast.

JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 2:47 PM

Let’s not forget the Jets interfered with the Pats and stole Parcels on the eve of the Super Bowl against GB and took players like Curtis Martin with him. Let’s not forget that the Jets illegally interfered with Branch which left the Pats no choice but to trade him. You have a very selective memory.

Get used to losing JB. It’s going to be a while before this dynasty runs its coarse. If it makes you feel better to think you’ve been cheated, more power to you.

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 2:54 PM

“Stole” Parcells? Ahh…Hess’ last great stand and accomplishment. What a coup. And the Jets did nothing illegal with any of that. Nothing.

But you keep clicking your heels together, and making excuses for ol’ Krafty Kraft…who cried and whined about not getting his way, threatened to move the Pats to Connecticut, and back out when he got his way, after Rowland started breaking ground for the Hartford stadium.

Kraft really has scruples balls.

Wish I could disagree with you, but I can’t. My Bolts aren’t playing well. We’d now be down a touchdown were it not for the historic 108 yard missed kickoff return by Antonio Cromartie.

To be this bad in the passing game against the Vikings is pretty sad.

Here’s hoping Philip Rivers figures it out, and fast.

Hawkins1701 on November 4, 2007 at 3:03 PM

And just as I post that, we fumble the ball away on our 20.

Whatever. The real Judas here is Belicheat, who cut and ran from the Jets hours after the other Judas, Parcells, failed to live up to his obligation to bring the Jets to the Superbowl

Oh, Good God! Was that in his contract? And speaking of contracts, remember when Belichick was the acting coach of the Jets so it wouldn’t look like Parcells was really the coach and the Jets ended up sending 4 draft picks to the Pats, by order of Paul Tagliabue, because of their screwing with Parcell’s contractual obligation to the pats?

That was awesome.

Pablo on November 4, 2007 at 3:07 PM

Hey, and the Vikings just gave us the ball back.

In a game where just about nothing else has gone right, I’ll take it.

Hawkins1701 on November 4, 2007 at 3:07 PM

But you keep clicking your heels together, and making excuses for ol’ Krafty Kraft…who cried and whined about not getting his way, threatened to move the Pats to Connecticut, and back out when he got his way, after Rowland started breaking ground for the Hartford stadium.

Ahem.

The Governor said that under today’s agreement, ”legally, there’s no way out of it unless we can’t get the site prepared.”

The steam plant still has not agreed on a buyout offer, but Governor Rowland said in an interview today that he would go to court, if necessary, to evict the energy company and get the toxin-laced land cleaned up in time for the Patriots to move in by 2001 or, more likely, 2002. Under the state’s powers of eminent domain, Connecticut can condemn the land for a public purpose in return for its market value.

Oh, and Kraft built and owns Gillette Stadium. How did he “get his way”? He spent his money, and built what he wanted?

There’s no whining in football, JetBoy. Look, your team may actually be about to win a game. You should be focusing on enjoying that.

Pablo on November 4, 2007 at 3:17 PM

GO COWBOYS! (later)

sarahk on November 4, 2007 at 3:17 PM

Keep it up, gentlemen…I’m a Jets fan, I can take anything ;-)

As for Parcells…he and his fickle self left the Pats. The Jets didn’t “steal” him so to speak.

Look at his history…he leaves the Giants a couple months after their second Superbowl. Then he left the Pats saying he was retiring and didn’t want to coach (OK, even I didn’t believe that at the time)….After what, 4 years with the Jets, he says…quote: “I’ve coached my last game”

Then he goes to Dallas.

Belicheat was the one who turned his back as the heir-apparent to Parcell’s Jets at the time. He mislead the team, and more importantly Jets fans, and scurried back to Krafty who underhandedly was in cahoots with Belicheat to get him back.

Kraft is the worst.

As far as the winner she felt both teams had a rich tradition of winning and the true victors are the fans.
Concerning the losers her comments were quite sobering, due to the Bush administations failed policies both teams have lost even before kickoff.
As President she promises Superbowl trophies for every NFLteam next season.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

Colts drive, impressive at first, sputters and wiffs on field goal attempt. A first. OMINOUS. But then Patriots go 3 and out. Another first.. INTERESTING.
